    Hello Kyle and Alyssa, I watch most of your videos on your various channels, but the Motoring Channel ones are my favorite. Part real world EV driving experience, part travel log, as you share your experiences in an entertaining way, I've learned quite a bit, as a new EV owner myself. When I bought my vehicle, the dealer handed me the fob and said good luck. I've learned all about the important charging curve, thermal management, and CCS charge station issues from you guys. I told you all this when we met at the Expo in Long Beach, but I feel compelled to give my thoughts again in this public forum. Keep up the great work, and thank you for continuing to shine a light on the quickly changing EV landscape. Looking forward to part 2 of this adventure. I'd like to see you pick up the Coda as well. Also, whomever is selecting the music for these videos is doing a great job as well.

    As for Bolts charging at 350kW stations. My wife just did a road trip with the Bolt. At a EA station she met a Chevy dealer team delivering a Bolt to customers and they told her to always charge at the fastest charger because it charges faster. Luckily she knows better (because of me showing her how things work) and actually educated them. They were really nice about it but THERE IS THE PROBLEM. Dealers still have NO clue what they are talking about!

    • @meandmyEV
      @meandmyEV 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don’t DCFC my Bolt very often but every time i do and there are cars that can charge faster, they are always parked at the slower chargers and I have to charge at the faster units. 🤷‍♂️ I think people choose the stations with the most convenient parking over the speed. To be fair, I don’t usually charge on road trips. The stations where I stop are usually in town and have people that live in nearby apartments charging.

    36c per kwh is just like Diesel or gas. Since market based retail electricity is only 8-10c per kwh, hopefully the government is getting out of its market manipulation, so that the charging network companies can provide a reasonable 15-20c rate to massively beat Diesel and gas. Without it, EV adaptation will be massively slowed. That would be bad for society and car enthusiasts who love the power of EVs. Great show again: )

    Your absolutely correct about dealerships not having a clue about their products. I accompanied a friend to pick up a 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV. Asked the salesman which charging systems were recommended? CHAdeMO, EV Go, electrify america? His response, what’s a CHAdeMO? How bout the rec media? For what? The cameras. What cameras. It has a backup camera. No live footage. Front, side, ect. What would you want that for? Ok how many KWh does the Bolt have? I don’t know. He couldn’t answer one single question about the car. Bragged that he sold 22 this month

    Excellent video, showing the true limitation of electrical vehicles and the charging infrastructure, especially when towing. For most people making the same drive it would be a truly stressful, long and miserable experience. If any one of those charging facilities in remote areas had been shut down, you’d be stuck in the middle of nowhere.

    In Vermont we have a bunch of locations with a single charger (usually Flo or EVGO). I showed up to one at 4% after passing a few that had long lines and it had an Ioniq5 plugged in at 97% and 15kW with nobody in sight. I waited 10 minutes, but nobody showed up. Now at 98%, I decided to be that guy. 10 minutes later, he came back and was pissed. "Charging etiquette" was thrown out there, and I politely reminded him that he wasn't the only EV out there, and that there were L2 chargers in the next spot over if he wanted to finish.
    Am I the a-hole??
    Awesome video BTW, looked like a fun road trip!

    I was at the Baker EA station last week and was blown away by the the further expansion of the Tesla Supercharger facility. Honestly, at what point does EA become embarrassed by their pathetic facilities that sit next to acres of Tesla chargers? Baker is their flagship; it ought to be their near-universal standard install for ALL freeway-oriented charging stations in the SW United States. Instead, the "standard" appears to be hellholes like Quartzsite.

    Wasn't the biggest fan of the comment you made about how you shouldn't be buying an electric car unless you can charge at home. I am about the same age as you, and most people in our generation don't have homes...we rent. The privilege of homeownership is probably something most of us will never experience. I don't want to be excluded, just because I don't own a home. I get by just fine by responsibly charging at work or in other public places. California is moving to all new electric cars in just a few years, so what are we supposed to do then. I get the frustration you experienced when road tripping (I've encountered it too), but let's not gatekeep and exclude anybody. 👍🏼

      That's why the sale of ice vehicles shouldn't be banned. If you can't charge at home that's an inconvenience they're forcing you into. He's saying if you can't charge at home don't buy an ev for your own convenience but if you don't mind then go right ahead.

    Edwards I remember being somewhat constrained, but I remember seeing someone towing a trailer with a Model 3 last September (college was starting). I was able on an eastbound trip to use a fast charger that had a better location relative to I-70 at Grand Junction to gain enough juice to go from Green River to parachute. Green River I saw the derated EA stall last week.
    I also ran into the construction last weekend on I-15 in Arizona and twice in the Las Vegas area (one downtown, the other passing the Strip).
    Las Vegas to Baker you would have the elevation gain shortly after the new inspection station, then a long down hill grade.

    You said "I can't remember why to not tow with the "Eco Mode".
    Is that because you said that the rear motor is not engaged, and can not provide any regenerative braking? And that the front motor is providing all the power to drive the Rivian, and that will make the front motor run much warmer compared to when both motors are taking some of the load, even if you are using slightly more power on a road trip.
    I think that is the best reason to use the regular mode when towing.

    And I have seen my ID.4 request more power than a charger was capable of, so I'm not so sure what you are saying about the requested speed screen on the chargers is true.

    I’ve been an electric car owner since 2013 and loved it ever since . But towing … no benefits from towing on electricity at all so far . Probably twice as expensive and 4 times as slow. Daily driving and road trips in my teslas have been amazing but tried using model x to tow and the unhooking hassle plus the low range has been a bad experience. Pass ! You can do it as you have time and make money from the video but giant pass for the rest of us. I have kept my 2003 ram diesel and while it barely gets used it has been amazing when needed . The x can tow 5k but giant pass for any towing I cannot cover on one charge . Just too slow !

    I’ve been planning on a trip to Vegas from the Pacific Northwest. Original plan was to fly and stay in a hotel, but I now have more time, so I looked up the campground chain I have a membership in. They have one in Vegas!
    So… Let’s ask A Better Route Planner if it’s possible to tow my 24’ travel trailer to Vegas.
    First plan - 24 hours, going “inland” direct route - US-97 through central Oregon, then over to Reno and down to Vegas.
    “Wait, that’s not a valid plan, it has multiple 200+ mile stretches between charges!” Yeah, forgot to switch ABRP to my “towing” profile. Flip that aaaand… 56 hours. Interstate 5 down to almost Los Angeles then over to Vegas.

    I have an Ioniq5 and a Model 3. I would much, much rather road trip the Ioniq5 because it is so much better to drive, but I usually end up taking the Model 3 because I can use either a Supercharger or anything on the CCS network. EA is the only CCS network that exists with more than 62kw charging in most of the areas that I drive. It sucks. Lots of good cars being let down by shitty charging networks.
    (And opening superchargers either via magic dock or cars supporting Tesla connector won’t automatically fix the charging issues)

    • @theredmonkey
      @theredmonkey ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah towing in an EV is not great but it's much cleaner emissions wise. Maybe a boat to a local lake or something but for heavy loads long distances regularly you still need diesel. For most truck owners an EV truck is likely sufficient.

    • @BBBYpsi
      @BBBYpsi ปีที่แล้ว

    • @lesliefranklin1870
      @lesliefranklin1870 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just filling up that aux tank just once would have quintupled your expense. Also, you would be hauling an extra about 800lbs in additional fuel.

    • @ab-tf5fl
      @ab-tf5fl ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it's quite that simple. Over time, we'll start to have more people in a situation where they already own an EV truck, and doing the tow in a diesel truck would require renting the diesel truck, which would cost substantially more, even if the fuel works out to be slightly cheaper. (If the need to do long-distance towing is sufficiently rare, going the EV route can still save time overall by avoiding the need for weekly gas station visits to power your routine driving around town).
      Also, not all charging during road trips necessarily has to be public DC fast charging, which is the most expensive way to charge an EV. Overnight charging can be level 2, which can be much cheaper, or even free, especially once more AirBnb hosts start catching on to the EV game and installing chargers on their properties. And of course, the first leg of every road trip is powered by cheap home-charged electricity, even if the others aren't.
      And, of course, fuel prices are very volatile, compared with charging rates, which seem to be roughly stable, going up each year with the rate of general inflation. So, even if diesel fuel beats Electrify America on cost today, there's no guarantee that will remain the case 3, 5 or 10 years down the line.
      By the way, I also noticed that Kyle's itemized EA bills include a sales tax, even though gasoline and diesel are not subject to sales tax anywhere (and EV drivers already pay the equivalent of motor vehicle fuel excise taxes through higher registration fees). Whether intentional or not, this seems like a state tax subsidy that's tilting the calculations towards diesel.

      @@lesliefranklin1870 I get Is about 1400-1800 miles Is towing with main tank & extra 100 gallon tank filled up. I was basing my cost on the miles he ran and how much miles per gallon I get when I'm towing multiply that by the cost of my fuel. So he had driven approximately 350 miles from start & cost was $135+ my cost to drive 350 miles towing his set up would be $94. Here is The Thing they are starting to raise the price of these charging stations because there's more and more EV's. Wanna say forces all to be on that EV system the charging will cost more than petro Would. Plus they're talking about adding a mileage tax because there will be no gas tax. Eventually it will be much more expensive to drive by the mile a EV

    We're encountering 150 KW Electrify America chargers that deliver 171KW. Damfino, but that's what we're experiencing. 171KW is the super-fast magic number with our EV6. Super, Super fast charging.

    just like towing a gas or diesel truck it will use more fuel well in this case use more power from the battery plus the wind blowing against you or side to side speed and traffic road conditions everything so no matter how good it might be with out towing when towing something like another vehicle with a battery pack which are heavier then a regular ICE Internal Combustion Engine wow never knew when the day would come when ICE would be also known for the Internal Combustion Engine. but anyways .

    Charges per KWh won’t be going down, looks like they’re trying to make the price per fill up electrical charge equal to if not more than a gas fill up.

    A soon as the 3500 HD EV trucks hit the showroom floor we'll dump diesel. Can't happen soon enough.

      Not sure if that would save any money over diesel. The charging rates are crazy high at 2-4X the wholesale cost of electricity. I have 5 diesel trucks in my fleet and a Cybertruck on order, but probably will not tow long distance with the CT.

    Kyle has charged the id to 4 on a 350 when he didn’t need too. He just likes giving boltowners a hard time. I know the bolt should use the 150. If you’re going to talk about others you need to do the right thing too. Id 4owners get bashed when ea is there network just like Tesla owners using their network.

    I thought L.A. was the worst when it came to charging. Try coming to Chicago where everyone who are doing rideshare lease programs on their Niro's and Bolts clog up the very limited stations we have here, charging to 100% just because "they can" ugh, I swear people are the worst!

    Would it have been smarter for Rivian to have a slightly lower top charge speed to be able to keep the charging going longer into the battery? Seems like they dump a bunch of current into the battery pack and heating up the battery beyond what it can handle.
    Also it seems like it should start cooling the battery much sooner than it does. Why ramp up the AC compressors right when you limit charging speed. Why aren’t they going well before it derates.

    So you're looking at around 40mph overall average travelling speed. That's both horrid and not too bad. When I'm road tripping in the Sprinter van I'll do many, many stops to just stretch or hike or just sit and watch the scenery. I figure on about a 50mph average travelling speed. I'm not doing 26 hours straight though.. wowzers.

    Energy density in a battery is nothing like gasoline. It takes I think 50x the amount of battery to equal a certain amount of gasoline

    It would be cool if they redid the race to vegas with new cars, like the reigning champ the taycan, racing it with the lucid, a silverado ev, a teala of some description. Would be nice to see a 800v class race. Maybe even throw in a joker car, an ICE car of any description that could make the trip in one go, But it only has the exact ammount of fuel required to go at say 50-60mph the entire way would be a real close race.

      Las Vegas to Ft Collins is 810 miles. Congress decided to limit car fuel tanks to only 500 miles maximum range. Thus the tiny 11 gallon fuel tank on my Ford C-Max. So any gas car will need a short fill along the route, or a second fuel tank?
      The whole idea was that it was not considered a "Race" as they limited their speed to within 5 MPH of the posted speed limit.
