    Alyssa is all about great ideas on this trip
    1. Why don’t we get food before we charge the car and then eat it while charging!
    2. Let’s get a Rivian R1S

    Do more old school roadtrips together like this video. What made me interested in your channel back in the day. New stuff is interesting, but sometimes exploring with a fun EV is a great escape. And now I want to go to Zion 😂

      Hoodie in 108 - 113 degrees and heavy long pants, complains that he has to keep A/C fan ripping constantly in the R1S, slowing down charging times at chargers and effecting range which he complains about also. Not a good look, when giving a honest review. Come on Kyle!

      In a real road trip, the initial charge to 100% would normally be done at home, meaning very cheap electricity rates. The superchargers would be used only later on in the trip, after the battery depletes.

    • @stuartj5520
      @stuartj5520 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Hi from here in the UK. Gallon of gas (taking into account your smaller gallon) is about $7 for regular, fast charging (non-Tesla) is around $1 per kilowatt, Tesla about half that on average. Best to charge at home as some tariffs give 10c per kW overnight

    • @BillyONeal
      @BillyONeal 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Right, but you're going to get 750 miles plus of range on that tank, not 350-400. So you'd about have to double what they paid here which puts them in the same ballpark.

  • @brianweathers7026
    @brianweathers7026 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

    If you open the Tesla app at the location, select the charger you will be charging at, then as soon as you plug it into your Rivian start the charging session on the Tesla app and it will bypass the handshake with Rivian and bill directly from Tesla and apply your discounted rate if you purchased their monthly pass. It has worked flawlessly for me so far.

    I had the pleasure(?) of rolling up on a dead RAN site post thunderstorms once with techs on site and got to be the tester (they were overjoyed given I had a low SoC and could hit 220kw). They told me they do bring online modules as it ramps, it takes longer when they haven't been used for a while. The last one kicks in around 194kw and pushes it over 200kw. Techs were super nice and was definitely happy to see them when I rolled up with 12% and saw the entire thing red lol

    There are filters to help with the route planning. Don’t just hit “go” if you want to customize route planning.
    Hit the filters “three bars” and adjust:
    *arrival SOC
    *networks to use (tesla, Rivian, ea, +more)
    *drive mode
    *towing load if applicable
    Then if you want you can save these filters.
    My guess is that the last time someone was route planning on this truck before you reset they filtered out all the other chargers and saved it.
    Honestly their mapping is pretty good but accessing this route planning settings once you have a calculated route is very cumbersome.
    Thanks for the great videos!

    Kyle, you are so right. I drove my F150 Lightning from AL to OH. You are so right. These prices has to be reduced.

    I haven't test driven the Gen 2 tri-motor yet, but my gut tells me that is the spec to get. All the efficiency of the dual motor, plus the max pack is standard, with some of the added umph (850hp, 1100 lb/ft torque if I remember) of the quad motor, and should have great off-road capabilities. I'm not really into max performance driving, so the 1025 hp of the quad motor doesn't fit my use case as it will for some people.The tri-motor just seems like the perfect balance overall and is the one I'm looking to get.

    As an ultra-distance runner and cyclist in Texas, it’s so frustrating to see people make poor clothing choices and then complain about the heat. But then I don’t think I’d know as much about how it matters if I wasn’t. Anyway, thin and lightweight loose clothes, sandals instead of shoes and socks, finding shade when you can, parking your windshield facing away from the sun… little tricks turn a miserable place into way cooler. Also, you don’t need to leave the AC on the entire time you are away from the car eating. You just leave your windows cracked and start your car remotely a few minutes before getting back in and it’ll be fine.

    Early on, when the route planing choses chargers sooner than Kyle would, I suspect that is the backend of ABRP optimizing shortest TRIP TIME vs fewest stops. While still waiting for my R1 order, I have spent a good bit of time "pre-gaming" several road trips using ABRP, Plug Share and any number of other charging location sites. In ABRP (rivian owned) there are MANY options to change how the algorithm routes you. The standard is shortest TOTAL trip time. In forum discussions on the same, everyone notes that ABRP will prefer more frequent stops that maximize charging curve speeds vs longer drives between stops. Basically, you can charge the miles back faster than you can take them off. So it's better to drive 85 and stop to fast charge from 10-65% than it is to drive longer and then go 10-90% etc. ABRP builds in time spent deviating from route, plugging in etc (adjustable) and adds that to its equation. An interesting video would be testing different routing systems, plans vs real world...

    Nice to see that someone is finally talking about thermo behavior both with EV batteries and charging. Right now, forecast are showing over 40% of the country is in or will be in triple digits and this is happening more frequently. Seems most EV and charging reviews only discuss performance in low temps which for many, never happens. Right now my two EVs are sitting in my attached garage which is showing a temp of 38.5c, outside temp is 42.8c. Would love to see more discussion on EV/charging performance in high temps. What impact higher temperatures have of battery degradation and what are the concerns for V2H/V2G use in high temps? Thanks as always. Since I live in SoCal desert, I will hold off on considering a Rivian until better thermal performance is confirmed.

    I have a launch 2023 large pack R1S and I find the key for pet mode is to get the interior very cold prior to stopping and placing in pet mode as well as tinted side glass, front windshield with shade protection (it wasn’t legal to have front windshield tinted in Nevada when I got mine done, and to use roof shades too - which also helps keep our large dogs cooler). If I do this, it can usually keep the temps lower and allow fan speed to be higher than 2. At least now we can increase it to much higher when driving. The highest I’ve had it get in 100 degree temps is 70 when set to 68. I do wish we could set pet mode to a much lower temp - at least to 65.

    Kyle you said something that made me think a bit when you were talking about the dual motor vs quad for rock crawling situations. I'm thinking dual may be better even without diff lock because of the zero rpm stall torque problem. By allowing the wheel without traction to rotate a bit and then grabbing that brake they can achieve motor rotation and then some momentum transfer to get moving. 🤔

  • @JustinJS
    @JustinJS 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

  • @WilliamAArnett
    @WilliamAArnett 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Why worry about stall torque? The proper technique is to never stop in the first place. I don’t mean to go fast, just keep a constant 1 or 2 mph. That way the momentum of the vehicle helps bump over small obstacles. And stall torque is never an issue.

    I would love if my Honda e could charge at anything more than 50kw. I once plugged in at a 50 and it was only pulling 17 ! Thankfully it's a city car and doesn't do many roadtrips.

    The Dual Max is such a perfect vehicle. At this point i'm waiting for either the F-150 to increase the range or Rivian to give the option for Apple/Android car play.

    Kyle I need advice!!
    Take advantage of used R1S Gen 1 prices ($20k to $35k below MSRP) or fork out for an R1S Gen 2 due to improvements especially what I am hearing about the suspension and ride quality changes? Please help lol

      Saving $20k to $35K is a powerful argument for the older vehicle.

    My Ford hybrid had a super smooth restart on the ICE, but it was obvious to my father the mechanical engineer. I could tell once I had driven it enough to recognize what he could sense. Over 230K miles on that car. I'd have a hybrid now, but they did not come with a spare tire anymore.

    Glad to see my e-Golf is not the only car struggling in the heat lol
    By the way, would you do some charge testing with your egolf? I'm assuming now you'll be getting rapidgating on the first charge.

    isn't the stall torque at the wheel with no lock up differential half the motor torque,? since the differential halves the torque and doubles the rpm when one of the wheels is locked. would it then theoretically really be better than the quad motor?

    The gen 1 vs gen 2 and dual motor offroad thoughts are what i was hoping for! Reaffirms my plan of going for gen 2 dual motor max pack.

    This is a damning video against Rivian’s Gen 1 HVAC. $100k and your sweating on a road trip like a 200k mile beater.

    On our trip to Moab from CA, every single EA derated for long periods on our Rivian. Outside temps low to high 90s. Will try wet rag on way back

    You need to check on a v4 supercharger (dispenser) if it also derates so quick.

    If you don’t want the rear to disconnect, just set the stability to reduced (or be in All Terrain which is the best mode for everything IMO lol)

    Will the second gen addressed the cooling issues? I live in Palm Springs and what you went through is, to be honest, a deal breaker. My wife and I are weighing a rivian R1S vs the cybertruck (finally received order invite)

    • @miami3863
      @miami3863 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m not optimistic that all the cooling issues will be addressed with the Gen 2. I have a late model 2024 like the one they’re driving. And it’s insufferable road tripping in the south.

    I know you can add a Rivian into your Tesla app for a monthly subscription for discounted supercharging of the Rivian. How does Tesla keep track of that so you get the credit or aren’t double charged?

  • @yayinternets

    A bummer to hear they won't be able to fix the thermals in the refreshed Rivian.
    Even Tesla doesn't have this down yet. Driving across the middle of nowhere Texas last year in a Model Y.. even with the AC set to 85, then totally off, it didn't have enough cooling capacity to deal with that heat.
    It reduces the range way way down too in that kind of heat. I literally had to turn around about 20 minutes into a trip leg and go back to the Supercharger (after I charged to 90%) because I couldn’t make it to the next stop. Basically just killed time for 2-3 hours until it got dark so I could keep going.

    I kinda like to see the charging speed much higher than on my ID.4 but then I remember that efficiency is double to R1S so the charging speed in terms of range per hour isn't as significant.

    I want this car, but this has given me the first doubt about range anxiety. It's still an issue for me, personally, not being able to stop for 5 minutes and be topped off anywhere. The fact I can look at what gas I'm getting and not have to worry that I'm being throttled is hard to beat
