This car is AMAZING! I've had my STi for 3 weeks and absolutely LOVE IT!!! I am new to the Subie World so forgive me for not knowing about past models, however, my daughter purchased the 2014 STi Tsurugi edition in February and that is when I fell in love :-). I can hardly wait to get on a closed track!
@@westwrld3322 lol man I saw how unreliable they were and how even though the car is old that the maintenance was still like what the car cost new. I had to pass on it. Sick cars. I drove in two but didn’t drive one. A blast and fast I just can’t justify the bmw tax and how hard they are to work on.
Good review. I recently bought a 2015 WRX STi Launch Edition with a manual transmission and it's a great driver's car. Driving the STi like a madman on bumpy backroads, as I frequently do, I'm too busy having fun to notice that the interior is just okay. For the price, the STi is a great performance car. No, it isn't a refined luxury sports sedan from Lexus - thank goodness. There are too many comfy, wanna-be sports sedans with soft suspensions and an automatic-only transmission (like the lame Audi S-3 that is automatic-only, here in the United States). If you actually like driving fast and aren't trying to impress your neighbors with a sleek, stylish fashion statement - buy an STi. Buy an STi and enjoy driving it before every car turns into a comfy, sleepy cruiser like Audi and BMW have become or, just as awful, before every car turns into a joyless appliance like the Nissan Leaf or Prius.
Just bought a 15' STi Limited and can't agree more. I'm not trying to keep up with the Jonse's and I just wanted a badass car w/ solid suspension and drivetrain. I compared to BMW and Audi, and for the $35-$40K price range STi is best deal by far.
genericdenizen1 My super-charged Toyota Tacoma X-Runner just smoked an STI the other day...and with the handling anti-sway and traction bars that come stock to the X-Runner...I would love to run one on a track...yea..a truck is every bit the road going racer as the STI...that at one time I though I wanted...and I spent 10k less...glad I stayed Toyota as I have for years...
YES finally someone else realizes it too - that silver accent on the bottom of the wheel drives me crazy it just looks so out of place but whatever this is still by far and away the best STI wheel yet.
Even after all these years ......still legendary. I've now moved to a fully loaded 2023 WRX 6speed Sport Tec. Love it. Fun, very flat in power delivery and just a bit more civilized than previous generations. Just a bit.
Drove it and a lot of other cars this year and loved it. The handling is really good and like he said it has great turn in. Best bang for the money for sure. I would buy it but just can't get past it having the same 10 year old engine, same brakes, same transmission etc.
While the FA20 gets better MPG and makes power more easily (this is according to Crawford NOT my personal opinion) the EJ is still nothing to complain about. It has it's problems sure, but it also has a decade of experience, parts and knowledge about it. If Subaru does it right (which I trust them 100% to) I would welcome a switch to the FA20 for the STi (although hopefully an FA25) but for now I see nothing wrong with what they chose to do. Making power with mods isn't that hard, but the understeer needed to be worked on. And Subaru has taken care of that so the 2015 STi is a huge win in my book.
Learn something new everyday. At first I thought that there was a slip when stating Mark Higgins' name, however come to see that he is David Higgins brother, and both are world renown and both drive under the Subaru banner. I must have always confused the two for being one person; one miraculously good superhuman of a rally driver.
I've had what will be 4 subarus now. A 1991 Loyale, a 2002 Bugeye WRX, a 2005 STi and now a 2015 STi Limited is on the way. Once you experience an STi you never want to go back..usually. There's just nothing else like them. My 05 has so far been the best car I've ever owned.
How has the reliability been? I've owned my 2017 STi for 3 weeks now. Love the hell out of it, but my god, there are so many people online that share all the issues their cars have. Truly jealous of the 2005 blob eye; my favorite of all STIs
The main problem with Subaru is that they don't evolve their STi motor often enough... at least here in the states. This car really should have had closer to 400hp and more torque.
I like the 305hp mark, bigger more powerful engine means bigger price and that is not what the STI is about. It is an affordable sports car and I wouldn't have it any other way.
2011wrxswp Think you are missing the point of my opinion. "Evolving" doesn't mean costs more... The WRX is a good example. It used to be 227hp, then 265. Gti used to have 90hp, then 140, then 180, then 200, now 240! and all this happens at roughly the same price point. why? because the market starts to demand something better. with a motor like this, don't think you need to go bigger... just better turbo system. i mean, the aftermarket is in business for a reason...
Nick Psaros If only driving sports had bothered to say this... yes the engine is the old one, but it's better, cuz it got a new tune, the power band is wider and overall it feels better on the butt dyno. simply put, they improved the old engine. and rumor has it that they're working on the wrx's 2.0 for the STi. The engine doesn't necessary make the car, the new STi is already better than the old one handling wise so that's a improvement
I agree gwot that the car is better... no doubt. but cmon! how epic would this car be if it was ALL new with at least 350hp?!?!? i like the car. makes me want to buy my 5th STi. but i feel like they need to do more. its still a great value but for my $ i just feel i want more. why>? cause if i bought this car, id for sure have to spend more on it to stage 2 it or greater. why? cause its not enough power. we will always want more...
hahah that I agree with you as well... as much as I'm trying to persuade myself that the car is better... a part of me still wants a new engine, which is why I hope they stick a new engine in it in a year or two, so I can justify trading in my STi.
It blows my mine when they review a performance based car and drive it like it’s a Toyota Camry . If I was in the market for an sti this review would not have convinced me at all to even consider getting this car . The car has much character to it , drive it how it suppose to be driven and your concerns would not be miles per gallon but how many smiles per gallon you’d be getting .
Did the Subaru engineers actually imply that the new engine for the STi will be a 2.5L FA? I've seen some hints / rumors and the major changes are probably not going to happen for at least 2 years, probably 3 years. At that time, the STi will most likely run on the Subaru Global Platform and get the FA engine (at last)...

I recently test drove the wrx and base sti. I know the spoiler is functional and part of the sti experience, but it is gaudy as hell. Too loud and obnoxious for a daily driver. Why does the mpg have to suck so bad!!! I know it's the AWD. That's what's up though. Just did a trip on highway 1 from berkley to my house (9hr drive but took 14 cuz of all of the stops we made) in my 2012 gt. Drove fast and averaged 25mpg. I've gotten 28before (granny driving) but average is 17/26. I really like EVOs and subarus though. I want one of those.
I think the WRX not having the unequal length headers is almost like how Dodge came out with a new car and called it a Dart or the Charger neither one of those is anything like the old ones and the new WRX even though it is a good car its missing its trade mark boxer rumble.
wow... just cuz the OUTER shape of the headlight is similar, and they place the foglights where it's LOGICAL. it still doesn't rule out the grill being COMPLETELY different. just because someone else said it looks like it, doesn't mean you have to follow ok?
gwot You sure seem to have a problem with me having the opinion that it looks similar to the Lancer. You don't agree, which is fine. That doesn't mean you need to start arguing about it, as your opinion will not change my opinion.
I'm waiting delivery for the 2015 sti premium , it's my 4th sti ownership & let me tell you all when it comes to a quality performance affordable AWD you will not find one like the sti . KEEP BUILDING THEM SUBARU & ILL KEEP BUYING THEM :)
im happy with my STI, they only thing that pisses me off if the poor leather. my car has 55 thousand kilometers and the side of the of the drivers seat looks like its done 400 thousand miles.
Slower in a straight line? Yes just barely! (due to 6 speed gear ratio) Around a track or corners, it smashes the old one. It's all about the handling! Better car, more refined!
"significant downforce?" lmao, its more like 30lbs worth. I got the WRX. When they put a new motor in the STi then ill give the WRX to my wife and upgrade.
+MrGovenator1 Hatches were only 1/3 of US sales. They could not produce the STI hatch because Subaru wanted to differentiate the WRX/STI chassis away from the Impreza line, in which the Impreza hatch already exists. Also, added the XV Crosstrek to their line so money was spent there as well. They improved the handling of this car out of the factory so much that it makes all previous year STIs handle like shit with tons of understeer.
why do I always hope these reviews include testing it on off-roads like gravel or snow?.. and then they shit me not start talking about going to a racetrack in perfect conditions where even a brz might feel just as good because traction is not a problem what-so-ever. and the special thing about the STI is that it is a road going rally car, but seems like reviewers have totally forgot about this altogether. shitty review (and boring looking car).. Would much rather have any of the previous models from 2014 and downwards -.- Best STI review BY FAR is still the one made by Ignition, featuring the 2011 Hatchback. Now THAT showed us its true values and sheer fun factor in the everyday life.
Of course, it's true. They can only drive in a straight line. I hate how stupid kids use this car for drag racing. So much potential for building on it just to go straight. What a waste.
Lol what? This new one is way more aggressive than the last model, which was hideous. Man I hated the hatchbacks. This is the most aggressive looking one since the GC8 in my opinion. I couldn't stand the last generation.
WRX still a better value. New engine and twin scroll turbo. I don't see many people buying an STi because it's still using the EJ257(known for ringland failures). If you own an outgoing STi, you might as well stick with it. A different chassis is not enough to blow another 40ks.
the WRX will always be a better value, unless you're going serious for competition. yes the EJ is known for ringland failures but most (not all) of that is caused by people who don't know what they're doing because they don't do supporting mods which starve the engine, thus resulting in engine failures and the engine is less forgiving.
how do you know the 2.0 won't have ringland failures? Also if I buy an STi and keep it stock, do I have to worry about these issues? Or are these issues the result of ricers modding their engine with unreliable tunes/mods who attempt to put out 400whp?
Ringland failure. A phrase just cut and pasted and used by many but failing to explain what it means because they dont actually know, but it sounds SCARY doesnt it, so why not frighten off potential buyers. Im sure Subaru are not in the least bit worried about armchair experts.
I bought my son an 2012 STI sedan. It's an extremely overpriced, crude little econo box. A 20,000 dollar car with 12,000 dollars of turbo. I bought the car in Philadelphia and drove it three hours home. The ride and road noise was unbearable! I was almost deaf by the time I got home. I think some of you young twenty somethings must be first time car buyers and thus don't know any better. The road noise in the cabin of these cars is totally unacceptable for the mid 30,000 dollar price tag of these cars. Oh well Just as long as junior is happy, then I'm happy. The only other car I ever had that road as badly was my 1987 Fox body mustang GT. If that put things into perspective kids.
This Is a huge let down! The car's looks, most deff, peaked in 07. The last few years look like they are dressing up Honda Civics. This 15 looks like it was rush out and just mashed other car parts onto it. I mean this car looks like it was Frankensteined with a Honda Civic body, Mitsubishi Evo head lamps and hood, the new Lexus Grill, And Ford Fiesta side mirrors. I just get the over whelming feeling of a rushed job full of over sight, followed up with a heavy hand buffing to round off all the edges. I like all the up grades for the guts and hart of the car but the seats should have a more race car look and feel. And will some one show them a full 19" wheel! this car would be just that much faster and better MPGs.
This car is AMAZING! I've had my STi for 3 weeks and absolutely LOVE IT!!! I miss the hatch!
But they might bring it back here in the States!!!!!
Bring the hatch back? But there is no hatch version anymore!
Because 50% of the sales in the US where the hatch version. They announced they might bring a hatch version back to the US.
Sniper riffle... Pew ..pew ... pew... pew... LOL WTF.
why do I always hope these reviews include testing it on off-roads like gravel or snow?.. and then they shit me not start talking about going to a racetrack in perfect conditions where even a brz might feel just as good because traction is not a problem what-so-ever. and the special thing about the STI is that it is a road going rally car, but seems like reviewers have totally forgot about this altogether. shitty review (and boring looking car).. Would much rather have any of the previous models from 2014 and downwards -.- Best STI review BY FAR is still the one made by Ignition, featuring the 2011 Hatchback. Now THAT showed us its true values and sheer fun factor in the everyday life.
3:35 RARRH lol
The headlights look like there from an evo and the tailights look like a brief after thought. No individuality or personality on the exterior imo.
People who complain about Subaru Oversteer ---> Cant drive
Of course, it's true. They can only drive in a straight line. I hate how stupid kids use this car for drag racing. So much potential for building on it just to go straight. What a waste.
The front has lost it's appeal, aggressive look.
I agree
The last model was perfect.
Lol what? This new one is way more aggressive than the last model, which was hideous. Man I hated the hatchbacks. This is the most aggressive looking one since the GC8 in my opinion. I couldn't stand the last generation.
Bob Jones yup that shit grows on you
WRX still a better value.
Roger Roth ^^This. Most of the time, it's the Fast & Furious kids that break these motors...
Better depending on what you want I guess...STi=better steering, better suspension, better brakes, adjustable diff, fog lights standard etc...
Ringland failure. A phrase just cut and pasted and used by many but failing to explain what it means because they dont actually know, but it sounds SCARY doesnt it, so why not frighten off potential buyers. Im sure Subaru are not in the least bit worried about armchair experts.
I will not buy a 2L FA motor, it better be 2.5L at minimum
Version 8 will forever be the best
Very disappointing review, you seem to have read the press release or brochures too much, seems like your reading straight out of them the whole time
I agree, and they don't even read the whole thing... they left out so much more
I bought my son an 2012 STI sedan.
I like it but the wing is too big! :(
+dexter tolentino They make one with a low profile wing if you're planning on getting one.
+dexter tolentino I swap it with WRX owner for free
I agree, that wing is ridiculous. It went from sporty to gaudy pretty quick.
if you are a real Suabru Wrx lover you'd never say that ^.^
stacey michelle I got sti hatch instead haha. The car is pretty much invisible to cops.
Quick Subaru, he did what you wanted, now pay him.
Lol he took all the corners so slow.... No G's
felt.
