Hi! I use pocket holes to assemble the drawer sides. No predrilling is needed with that. But if you’re just screwing through the sides (not pocket holes), predrilling is a good idea.

I agree...she really is good. I'm about to venture down this rabbit hole and start buying some tools and start with her recent bench design as need a couple. Can't find anything I like better than her design...so move over rabbit - I'm coming in!
Just found this video and subscribed. I'm running out of room for tools in my little 1 car garage. Going to build a rolling tool chest with 3 drawers on one side. Thinking about doing the sides with 1x6 and 1/2" for the bottom, and ripping the sides down with my skill saw.

Great tutorial as always Shara! I'm building drawers now and do mine the same way with the bottom captured in the dado and pocket screws. I hope your weather is warming up. I didn't see Bubby again in this video so he might be staying on his heated pad. We've already been in the 80's a few days here in AZ but are back in 70's now. This is the time of year we love here. Wish I could send you some of our sunshine. It will warm up soon though so hang in there!

Excellent drawer series! I appreciate you explaining the "why" behind a number of your tips instead of just telling us what to cut and where. More of a "teach a man to fish" vs "give a man a fish" style and it shows the concepts I need to design/build things on my own vs endlessly following guides and plans. *subscribed*
Absolutely great video lesson. I use a router for dados, but I need to get or make a small table for it so I can quickly run the boards through it. Thanks for the tips and until next time... Build safe.
A router table is one of those things that is so helpful once it’s there and set up but so daunting to actually build and set up 🤣 I’ve had a half finished router table in my shop for months 🙈 this reminds me I need to finish it haha. Anyway, thanks so much for watching! Happy building!
I love your approach to making things. They turn out great and your attitude about not over complicating things and not sweating that 1/32 of an inch when not necessary is great advice to me the casual DIY'er.

Big Hugs to you for that little tid bit on the actual measurement of 3/4" plywood. As it is, I'm HORRIBLE at measurements so I take extra steps to check for accuracy. While each piece appears to be accurate, my finish product typically seems to be just a smidgen off and I could never figure out why. I'd get so mad at myself thinking I measured or cut something wrong. Your random FYI in the midst of another one of your awesome videos literally sent sparkles of happiness through me! 🤩🙌 Thank you for explaining that!
Very well explained. Interested in seeing you video on the drawer slide installation. Don't do drawer slides often, but I about tore my hair out doing them those few times.
I’ve been staring at a completely trashed set of kitchen drawers now for 3 months. I have never really done woodwork. When sales came up I bought a track saw, router and an MFT table. I’m seeking the confidence to actually get them out and start using them. Having watched LOADS of utube vids on drawers this series is absolutely magic. It covers everything in clear, concise instructions. Very well done indeed ! Even though the states is imperial and UK is metric you don’t have to give a hoot - the method shines. Best I get going and also get one of them Kreg thingymijigs,,,,,,,,,,,,,,😂
Thanks for sharing your tips on building drawers you just make it look easy, I haven't made many drawers, but I started making my first drawers the last way you showed but the height was an issue and so i started making dados with a router to slide in drawer bottom and just like that my drawers evolved. Last summer I built a custom closet organizer, we had intended to buy 2 cabinets from ikea to have 8 drawers for storage. With everything that happened with supply chain issues, I ended up downloading from your site how to build drawers, and built them myself. For the bottom slot, I do had a router and small table, that through trial and error with scrapes I was able cut those. What you mentioned about the width of 3/4 yeah, that did bite me, I bought my maple plywood from the big box hardware store, the wood workers lumber yard was about $25 a sheet more, yes much better quality and 3/4 thick. I did find with the soft close slides I bought, my width was just off and the drawer did not slide properly, so another sheet and I cut new boards for the width and it resolved the issue I had. I had concerns about doing this myself, but by the end, I had it figured out. Again your documentation on how to do this helped a lot. I did use the same setup for ripping my plywood, trying to feed it on my basic table saw was not going to get me the results I needed from a 4x8 sheet. I also used pocket screws. My former neighbor who does home remodeling, talked me through some of this before he moved, as he was building new cabinets and drawers in his garage for his new house.
I love this! Could you make a video giving tips for ripping plywood with your circle saw? I have one of those attachments, but honestly it’s still hard to get a straight line sometimes.
Shara, another great video! I really like seeing your methods and considering them for my projects. I'm sure they're helpful to many of your viewers. The weather seems to have broken here. I've spent the last two days with the garage door open as I work on my projects. With Spring we have tons going on as I suspect you do as well. Sorry for lip. Thank you! I personally don’t finish my drawer boxes, but you definitely can if you wanted to seal them. And yes, I sand after edge banding. Nicely done! I'm firmly in the edge band camp (band camp? see what I did there?). I tend to flipflop on whether to dado or glue/staple the drawer bottoms, based on how much weight they might have to carry, although that's probably another case of overanalyzing... I do have one small gripe - based on your pinned comment, I'm guessing you considered footage of the shop animals to be "non-critical" and I take great exception to that.🤣😁😉
We can be in the edge “band camp” 🤣 together! Haha. Also, I actually didn’t have any animal footage to include…they were out sunbathing the whole week I filmed these videos. It was so nice that week but it’s turned off cold again and as I type, we are all in our coats, sitting in the sun trying to keep warm 🤣 wishing for summer soon 🤞
Yes, they work great. I’ve used them in several projects. But I don’t plug them unless they’ll be seen and in drawers, they won’t be seen once finished 👍

Your channel is great. Im starting a closet upgrade and just picked up a pocket jig. After building initial shelf it’s a little tall for my wife and so I have to adjust it. How is reusing the shelving that was pocket jigged already?

Really fantastic tips, Shara! Thanks a bunch! 😃 Personally, I normally use both metric and imperial systems. (Here in Brazil we use metrics for everything, but when I buy some plan for woodworking, I need to work with imperial.) And, to be honest, my only issue with the imperial system is that the conversions aren't direct (like 1 meter being 100 centimeters and 1 centimeter being 10 millimeters and so on) and you need to convert between fraction and numbers with decimals... Because calculators won't do it for you. 😬 But other than that... There's nothing more to it. Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

I don’t know why they had to make it 12” is a foot and inches are measured in 16ths and 8ths. Hi! Since I’m using pocket holes here, I choose pocket hole screws. Since it’s 3/4” pocket holes, I choose 1 1/4” length. In the early part of the video, the section in your right hand appears to have quite the warp/crown.... it could be the camera lens, but it seems to be there a couple of later views as well. IF a board is warped/crowned and you must use it for a side or back section, which way would you put the warp/crown? Thanks 🙂
I actually noticed that when editing, but did not notice it when building. After seeing it in the footage, I went back to the drawer box to check and it’s not bowed. I checked all the drawers because I couldn’t remember which one I used for the demo here and I made two of these cabinets. When I checked, none of them were bowed. It may have been before completing the assembly and it straightened out when I installed the bottom and pulled everything together. Or it could have been the angle of the camera. My guess is it was slightly bowed, exaggerated by the lens, but pulled straight when the bottom panel was installed (see the part of the video where I talk about square). That said, if it was bowed and I noticed it while building? I’d still use it for either because the bottom panel will likely pull it flat.
@@WoodshopDiaries Thanks much. I was pondering if I'd turn it so the high spot was pointing in or out? Probably, on such a short board, it wouldn't matter, eh?
I’d turn the high spot in so the bottom panel can push it out. But you’re right…wouldn’t make a huge difference either way on a short board like this. Plus the plywood is fairly flexible and there’s enough play in the slides, so it’s really not super critical unless it was a very significant bow.

Hi ! I’m getting ready to build the boxes? Would bigger boxes sag if 1/4 plywood are stapled to the bottom, rather than with the use of a dado slot? Box size is 22 width x 20 long
Hi shara. Are you saying it wont affect the drawer front measurements if i staple the quarter ply directly onto the bottom? Would it mean fitting the sliders differently because the box is a quarter deeper? Sorry for all the questions 😅
Hi! No that shouldn’t affect the drawer front and if you check out my installing slides video, everything there still applies the same even if you staple it on the bottom. The only difference would be that you may want to make the drawer box sides slightly shorter so the overall box dimensions stay the same
Two likely culprits: 1. Crappy plywood or 2. Crappy blade I’d recommend trying a fine finish plywood blade on your saw. It makes a world of difference. Basically, you just want a high tooth count
How to determine measurements of the drawer- how much clearance do you leave on each side of drawer opening that does not become too much for drawer slides. Hope that makes sense.

I’ve been using it on projects for 7+ years and I’ve not had any come off. I’ve used it in nightstands, dressers, kitchen cabinets, closet cabinets (all daily use) and in bathrooms (humid areas) and never had an issue with it. The good thing is that if it ever did start peeling, you could iron it back on. But, I’ve never had to do that. Last summer I built a custom closet organizer, we had intended to buy 2 cabinets from ikea to have 8 drawers for storage. With everything that happened with supply chain issues, I ended up downloading from your site how to build drawers, and built them myself. For the bottom slot, I do had a router and small table, that through trial and error with scrapes I was able cut those.
What you mentioned about the width of 3/4 yeah, that did bite me, I bought my maple plywood from the big box hardware store, the wood workers lumber yard was about $25 a sheet more, yes much better quality and 3/4 thick. I did find with the soft close slides I bought, my width was just off and the drawer did not slide properly, so another sheet and I cut new boards for the width and it resolved the issue I had.
I had concerns about doing this myself, but by the end, I had it figured out. Again your documentation on how to do this helped a lot. I did use the same setup for ripping my plywood, trying to feed it on my basic table saw was not going to get me the results I needed from a 4x8 sheet. I also used pocket screws. My former neighbor who does home remodeling, talked me through some of this before he moved, as he was building new cabinets and drawers in his garage for his new house.

Nicely done! I'm firmly in the edge band camp (band camp? see what I did there?). I tend to flipflop on whether to dado or glue/staple the drawer bottoms, based on how much weight they might have to carry, although that's probably another case of overanalyzing... I do have one small gripe - based on your pinned comment, I'm guessing you considered footage of the shop animals to be "non-critical" and I take great exception to that.🤣😁😉
We can be in the edge “band camp” 🤣 together! Haha. Also, I actually didn’t have any animal footage to include…they were out sunbathing the whole week I filmed these videos. It was so nice that week but it’s turned off cold again and as I type, we are all in our coats, sitting in the sun trying to keep warm 🤣 wishing for summer soon 🤞

A nice trick for covering the pocket holes is to use wood plugs. Kreg sells them and they generally fit well.
Yes, they work great. I’ve used them in several projects. But I don’t plug them unless they’ll be seen and in drawers, they won’t be seen once finished 👍

Personally, I normally use both metric and imperial systems. (Here in Brazil we use metrics for everything, but when I buy some plan for woodworking, I need to work with imperial.) And, to be honest, my only issue with the imperial system is that the conversions aren't direct (like 1 meter being 100 centimeters and 1 centimeter being 10 millimeters and so on) and you need to convert between fraction and numbers with decimals... Because calculators won't do it for you. 😬
But other than that... There's nothing more to it.

In the early part of the video, the section in your right hand appears to have quite the warp/crown.... it could be the camera lens, but it seems to be there a couple of later views as well. IF a board is warped/crowned and you must use it for a side or back section, which way would you put the warp/crown? Thanks 🙂
I actually noticed that when editing, but did not notice it when building. After seeing it in the footage, I went back to the drawer box to check and it’s not bowed. I checked all the drawers because I couldn’t remember which one I used for the demo here and I made two of these cabinets. When I checked, none of them were bowed. It may have been before completing the assembly and it straightened out when I installed the bottom and pulled everything together. Or it could have been the angle of the camera. My guess is it was slightly bowed, exaggerated by the lens, but pulled straight when the bottom panel was installed (see the part of the video where I talk about square).
That said, if it was bowed and I noticed it while building? I’d still use it for either because the bottom panel will likely pull it flat.

I’d turn the high spot in so the bottom panel can push it out. But you’re right…wouldn’t make a huge difference either way on a short board like this. Plus the plywood is fairly flexible and there’s enough play in the slides, so it’s really not super critical unless it was a very significant bow.

Hi ! I’m getting ready to build the boxes? Would bigger boxes sag if 1/4 plywood are stapled to the bottom, rather than with the use of a dado slot? Box size is 22 width x 20 long
For that size drawer, I’d be using dados - the staples alone, won’t hold for long.

Hi shara. Are you saying it wont affect the drawer front measurements if i staple the quarter ply directly onto the bottom? Would it mean fitting the sliders differently because the box is a quarter deeper? Sorry for all the questions 😅
Hi! No that shouldn’t affect the drawer front and if you check out my installing slides video, everything there still applies the same even if you staple it on the bottom. The only difference would be that you may want to make the drawer box sides slightly shorter so the overall box dimensions stay the same

Do you have any suggestions when I rip the plywood with my circular saw the wood edges do no cut clean and splinter the top layer.
Two likely culprits:
1. Crappy plywood or
2. Crappy blade
I’d recommend trying a fine finish plywood blade on your saw. It makes a world of difference. Basically, you just want a high tooth count
and what grade of plywood you use? i see most of shops here in mexico use to sell BC quality but yours looks so perfect

I buy mine on Amazon in bulk packs of 10 and I don’t use one particular brand. I use various brands depending on price and what can ship the quickest.
How well does the iron on edging last? Does it eventually come off? Thanks.
I’ve been using it on projects for 7+ years and I’ve not had any come off. I’ve used it in nightstands, dressers, kitchen cabinets, closet cabinets (all daily use) and in bathrooms (humid areas) and never had an issue with it. The good thing is that if it ever did start peeling, you could iron it back on. But, I’ve never had to do that. Im really bad with drawers! Not sure what im doing wrong but one side always wants to pop out of the track. Maybe i should add a 1/16th?
It’s hard to say for sure, but you could try that. Or try shimming up the slide to see if that helps
