I don't recall seeing Ford open up and have fun this much in any other interview. Conan is so good at getting people to relax and have fun.

It's a Late Night tradition. ❤️ But Conan is absolutely one of the best; it's why his podcast has been such a success.

Harrison Ford has a reputation as a bad interview, but Conan knows the secret to interviewing him, which is that he doesn't give a crap about the "mythology" of his characters. Talk to him about his craft, flying, basically anything OTHER than Han Solo, and he's a lot of fun.

Conan also seems to be one of the few interviewers who seems to recognize that Ford’s quiet gruffness comes out of Ford’s anxiety doing interviews-it’s a pretty clear defense mechanism. His show so often gives Ford some bit to do, something where Ford can play alongside Conan instead of just having to be extemporaneously talkative. The Ford interviews always feel like an example of how to be a great late night host, tailoring the approach of the interview to what will make the guest feel like he is in safe hands.

as always, problem lies with interviewers, not the interviewees. Interviewers come in with agendas. If they could just treat the meeting as casual conversation.

Conan is the ONLY person Harrison will open up with and play along. You can see he genuinely feels friendship and kinship with Conan.

This clip is 20 years old today, and I remember being captivated by this interview the day it happened. Harrison Ford being this open with Conan is just wonderful, and is memorable all these years later. The most underrated late show of all time.
He's younger in this interview than Tom Cruise is now. Him talking about Raiders here is like Tom talking about Minority Report now. Ain't that weird?

Conan is the ONLY host that I have seen, at least in my generation, that feels GENUINE. He doesn't fake laugh or just stare with no emotion at his guest. He is honestly just gifted at hosting. Also love that he went to Harvard and acts like my classmates at community College 😂😂

I remember this interview because it was the first time I’d ever seen a celebrity make fun of the movie they were tasked with promoting. The second time was when Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson were doing the rounds for the final Twilight movie. Great stuff if you can find it . . .
Under every Harrison Ford interview someone says this is the only interview they've seen him laugh/talk openly.
"Hollywood Homicide" came out less than a year after this interview - and while the movie isn't that great, Harrison has some truly hilarious moments in it. Seeing the normally stoic and serious Harrison dry-humping the one-way glass in an interrogation room remains a favorite scene of mine. Worth checking out if you've never seen it! Probably the funniest movie he's done to date, and certainly the closest he's gotten to anything resembling "slapstick."

Anchorman 2, it was mostly a cameo and he mostly played the straight man in the scene, but it's a pretty funny scene

I went to see this "Canine Teen" movie when it came out, and it wasn't at all what I expected! It was about a submarine, not a dog.
For decades, people have been calling Harrison grumpy. His conan interviews are the only ones where he seems relaxed and is having a good time- even to the point of being silly, unlike his entire career of being serious.

Ford is so charismatic that he can be ridiculing his own movie and you're totally with him and then he's serious about it and you're totally with him.
Harrison is funny as hell, he’s a dry and witty bloke who would fit in exceedingly well in the UK humour wise.
There's a pic online of Ford, carrying his bag, agreeably taking a photo at a UK airport with some short, exceedingly normal chubby British bloke with red hair - a big smile on Ford's face - and you can tell in the pic that the bloke probably said he was a big fan without being a wanker about it, hence Ford being happy and at ease to chat and take the pic. That's a longwinded way of saying, you're not wrong.

@@wasteofspace20 I'm an Aussie but have spent years hanging out with UK folk at pubs and backpackers down here and get the humour. Quite relaxed conversations, some shit stirring, dry, fairly self-effacing and a likeable bunch overall, knock on wood,.

I’ve only had the chance to visit Perth and thought it was fantastic but Melbourne’s cultural elements have always interested me, the people from there, especially Latrobe U I worked with are always very impressive and quite global. You Aussies are pretty damn good at being honest about politics too, I always had a good time with your lot, you guys recognize the hypocrisies in any reality or person much faster than a lot of other cultures. One of my all time favorite conan moments, Harrison Ford has always been awkward but when he randomly went on bashing his own movie... I loved that, Conan looked a bit nervous too, he wasn't expecting that, Harrison Ford has never really given a shit
K-19 is actually one of my favorite submarine movies... still remember how much it hurts me to see the radiation leak disaster as a child

I noticed that ... was wondering if he’s trying to pronounce it as a Russian would or did he really have problem pronouncing this word .. probably the former ..
At the time, George W Bush was president, and pronounced it nuke-u-ler, and I suspect it was still a common dialect variant among people.
So disappointed the Farrelly Brothers didn't cast him in anything after this. I feel like we missed out on our chance for an all-out slapstick Harrison Ford comedy.

I think that film, K-19 is Ford's most outstanding performance of his career.
This show was in 2002. Indiana Jones was scheduled for 2004, consider how long Harrison had to wait when they started in 2008. Lucas had waited so long and guess what, it was a horrible script. Crazier than fiction.
imagine how bad the script woulda been if they had soldiered on in 2004 and just gone with what they had then!

Tbh the alien plot was more realistic than the holy stuff they did before, the only problem with KOTCS was the execution. Too much CGI, overacted and Indy became a superhuman despite being the oldest he'd ever been.
I love how tense the audience got when they didn't realize that Harrison was being sarcastic about the movie title, leaning into his desire to appear in goofy comedies. That was a hilariously precarious couple minutes 😂

I remember when this movie came out. Wasn't really interested..... but then saw this interview.
Norm MacDonald once said about Letterman: “on the Letterman show, there’s a joke. The audience are in on it, the home viewers are in on it, Dave is in on it. And the joke is YOU, the guest! Once I figured out that, I started having a lot of fun.”
Reflecting on that statement while watching this video, I think that THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY is the butt of Conan’s running joke. As a partial outsider, or at least formerly behind-the-scenes player, Conan fell naturally into parodying Entertainment, while also balancing a reverence for it.
