  • Choosing the right fly reel for saltwater flats fishing can be challenging, in this video, I cover as much as I can about all things reels. from sealed drag to cork drag, weight, and even touch on price. We look at reels from a variety of brands including reels from Mako and Shilton. I try and cover as much as possible to give my honest opinion on what works where and when.
Fly reels today are beautifully refined pieces of machinery. It's hard to find a reel that doesn't do what it says on the box. This video is on the slightly long side and does naturally slip into a bit of a comparison between some of my favorite personal reels. I do try however keep it as objective as possible.

Abel Super 12 - Custom "Alphonse fishing co" paintwork - Beautiful and classic design

All these reals are magnificent and definitely get the job done. Hopefully after this video you will be more equipped to make an educated choice the next time you are making such an important investment. Fishing tackle is something that becomes part of you, and for me, reels have always had an incredibly special place in my heart.
I hope you enjoy the video

This is Nick Curcione on my wife's computer. Excellent video, you covered all the relevant points. After 50 years of challenging bluewater brutes on fly tackle I give the nod to the new Shilton. I recently took a mako, estimated at 400-450 lbs on a GR 12. The reel performed flawlessly. From the smooth drag to the way it retrieves line the reel is superbly engineered and and constructed.

Never thought I'd see the day when a Mako fly reel was featured on a TH-cam video, especially since they've been available for so many years. Thanks for this video, I appreciate it greatly!

Awesome thorough review ! I’ve been considering picking up a Shilton SR9 here in the U.S for east coast stripers and your video solidifies my decision! My brother had a nautilus x series which failed the first time out on the surf, seal went out…. Being self serviceable is huge for me.

Great review . Much appreciated. From ur podcast on reels . I gather if you could only have one reel it would be a shilton. Bomb proof. Question what bomb proof rod are you installing on your 10 and 12 weights shiltons .probably only get too do this a couple times in my life. Certainly don’t want it ruined because of equipment failures. Thanks sincerely James m. Dees

Nice review Kyle, I’m about to upgrade to my second tarpon reel here in the Florida keys and I’m between Tibor and Shilton. I tried both out in the local fly shop but I think your review put me over the edge to side with Shilton

Good one , lighter for me is everything in a 12 weight and it must be able to be dunked in salt water 💪

Hey Tim! I agree, for those long popping sessions, lightweight helps for sure! Hope you're well!

Save up..then save up some more !
Buy the best you can afford, even used.
Life's too short for an ugly reel !

Well thanks for the 37 minute plus Ad for Shilton, and the reason they cost less than the USA reels they copy is due to cheaper labour cost in the RSA.
