A DIY Slingshot/Catapult Catch Box

  • Well, since Gamekeeper John and Chris at Catapult Carnage have me going full bore with slingshots I figured out pretty quickly that I would need a catch box for my ammo or I would spend a lot of money on it. This is what I came up with. Please be sure to check out their channels as well...these guys are AMAZING!

    Fantastic! and the triple payoff of hitting target, ammo falling on the wood and then the plink in the can at back. tremendous

      Thank you, Jeff. I probably spend more time than I should shooting at that thing just because of the sound.

    As always, I find my self staring and wondering "what is that for?" and when it becomes clear, I have a grin from ear to ear and totally impressed. Great job! I will admit I have no intention of duplicating this project because there is not enough wood to make one the size of a barn door, which I will need to ensure I hit a 30' X 30' target! LOL Well done sir!!!

      Haha, thank you Richard and Jennifer. This slingshot thing has really put me in touch with my childhood again. I bet you'd be surprised at how well you could learn to shoot. Just watch a couple of Gamekeeper John's videos and you'll be on your way!

    Thanks for the inspiration on this. Very crudely constructed one based off of your design and added a ammo sorter below it. I am 100% sure I would have built mine if I hadn't seen your how to on your catch box. Thanks again!

      Thank you so much, Bryon! Glad that you were able to pick up some tips...I’m super interested in your ammo sorter as I shoot two sizes. Is it a track with holes drilled with increasing sizes?

      @@StanCrafted Here is the one that I built. th-cam.com/video/OTLv6CF7hDw/w-d-xo.html Here's the link the the original video I saw for a marble sorter that I used as the basis for the ammo sorter. Pocket83 : th-cam.com/video/ya9zTstjOIU/w-d-xo.html . I linked back to your video in my description as you gave a lot better instructions on how to build it and just a lot better craftsmanship. The purpose of my video was combining the two concepts. I would definitely check out the Pocket83 video for the marble sorter. Mine works just fine for me, but if I do it again, I would use the steel rods, especially if I wanted to also sort out bbs..

      Thanks! This has worked out really well so far. I'm getting about a 95% return rate in the can. Some shots will hit off the target just right and bounce back out, but they are easy to find right in front of the box. If I was to make another, I think I could make it just a little deeper and solve that too.

  • @jacksync8713
    @jacksync8713 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    flippin Ek, you must be using rubber bands nicked from the stationary cupboard, made a similar catcher, with my best old towel, balls keep bouncing out. my plan is now to make a black hole at the back of the box and reclaim the original minerals from the ensuing time continuum and reconstitute them back into ammo. simple !

    • @StanCrafted
      @StanCrafted  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      😂 I started out shooting 1/4 steel and it worked okay...when I went to 3/8th too many bounced out and I added some 1/4” ply pieces that are about 6” long now to the front to catch them better. Works great now

      Thank you. I really like the sawstop. I got it because of the safety feature to make my wife happy, but it's a well built saw. I've never tripped the sensor, but I had a student do it this year and it worked flawlessly, just a nick on his finger.

      Thanks, Shawn! I’ve been shooting everyday. The catch box works really well. About 90% catch rate. There are still shot that hit the can or the spinner and kick out, but it’s a whole lot better than it was!

      @@StanCrafted Are you shooting metal rounds? I've never shot one myself but I was going to pick up a pack to take to Canada but the balls were glass and I wasn't sure if they were to supposed to shatter on impact or what. I didn't want broken glass on the lake haha.

    • @StanCrafted
      @StanCrafted  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@KellyConcepts Yep, I have 1/4" steel and 3/8" steel. In the UK videos they are called 6mm and 9.5mm. Steel is great because you and pick up the ones that bounce out of the catch box with a magnet. I highly recommend slingshot shooting. For me it's been a really nice way to just relax and bit and have some fun.

      Hi Christian...no plans...just documenting the idea...if I had this to do over again I would make the box a little bit deeper. Some of the steel balls bounce off of the towel and come out of the front. I would say just take the idea and run with it for whatever size wood you have. Thanks!

  • @drolsisusej100
    @drolsisusej100 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    very nicely done, by far the Best i have seen cant wait to start building one. question for you , do you think it would work just as well as a skeleton frame with the bottom catch or do you think you need the full walls ?

    • @StanCrafted
      @StanCrafted  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the skeleton frame would work just fine...but I would add cloth to the sides just to catch shots that bounce off. Also...if I had to do it all again I would make the box deeper than I made this one so that it will catch the shot that bounces off targets. This one is fine when I miss and hit the towel...but I don't catch every shot that hits a target.

    Why didn't you have the floor tilted to the front? This way you can put the collection can in the front and not have to walk around the catch box to retrieve your ammo.

    • @StanCrafted
      @StanCrafted  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Keith...you could certainly do that...or off to one side...I just didn’t want to see it mainly. I shoot a few hundred shots before I empty it...over the course of a few days so I really don’t retrieve ammo that much. If a person shot more than I do though I think that would be a great idea.

  • @injairgun
    @injairgun 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Nice build! You forgot, however, to add a bottom cross piece so the ammo doesn't escape the box lol.

    • @StanCrafted
      @StanCrafted  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct! I've since added an extension to the bottom that is just screwed on so it can be replaced if needed. It has a lip on it so it catches shots that it targets and bounce back a bit. After letting some friends shoot at it I've also screwed sacrificial strips around the frame...

    • @injairgun
      @injairgun 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2
