This bike has to be the biggest disappointment in recent memory. Really I wasn't surprised at all, just the hopium had me delusional. A GSXR 750 will stomp this thing hard and will most likely last twice as long. This is how things are now.
117 is plenty of power to have fun? Bro. 40 is plenty have fun. 70 is plenty to get rowdy. 100 is plenty to off yourself. 117 is NOT a shortage of power
absolutely lol. people are so worried about spec sheets these days when most riders cant max out a ninja 400s performance in anything other than a straight line. start keeping up with me through corners then we will talk power numbers.
I agree except for the 40 number. If you live where its hot or at high altitude, 40 to 45 isn't going to cut it. 55 to 60 hp is the bare minimum IMO and the A2/LAMS BS is really the only reason we have suffer with less than 50 in the USA. Even a carbed 500 could do 50+ hp back in the day, modern 400 and 500 twins should be at 55 to 60 hp minimum.
@@glsracer Idk. I recently did a 700 mile road trip on my friends clapped out ninja 300. I was blown away with how much fun I had. I thought I'd hate it. Far from it. It was weirdly fun having less power. Dropping into 4th and pinning it just to barely pass someone doing 90 on the highway? 10/10
It’s always interesting when new bikes come out everyone wants more power, less weight, better suspension all at a cheaper price only to be disappointed 😂
Folks are talking fully and completely out of their asses about this bike. “It’ll never be an r1!” It isn’t trying to be. “ONLY 117 hp???” With a tune they’ll make about 120 to the wheel and 70 ft lbs, 55 ft lbs at 3k rpm. Bike weighs 430 wet so after exhaust and tidy it’ll be 415 or less. People have such a backwards sense of what is and isn’t fast. This bike will outride the majority of the people that pony up and throw a leg over one. It’ll be an excellent street bike, and the aftermarket is already huge for them. The biggest reason this exists is because Yamaha now puts this engine in 5 motorcycles. It’s making dividends on it R&D.
117 is low. yeah it is exceeding a super but alot of us who are thinking of getting out of the 600, I.E. my lady on her 650 SV, class on the track were wanting alot more from this.
@@nicholaspulley6493 Boo hoo if only there were lots of other bikes she could buy. Also you said she's getting out of 600, "ie 650," which is some clueless shit to say.
The huge issue with the the cp3 is that people are falsely overstating the gains from tunes and always have. Tunes on the latest cp3 deliver next to nothing in power but they do deliver the perception of power by altering the throttle maps and reducing the engine braking. So people believe that their bike has been transformed when it hasn't.
@@MrBCRC Totaly ignore tune maps from profesionals that are getting 120+ from the CP3, cause obviously you know more than someone that owns tuning businesses
GSXR 750 produces peak torque at 10800 rpm whereas R9 at only 7000 rpm. That is night and day if we talk about torque and throttle response for casual sport riding.
@jameskelly2419 don't get me wrong I love that 4 cylinder wail but I also love that 3 cylinder growl. Thise cp3s with a proper exhaust sound beautiful to me.
Call me crazy, but i hate the looks of those wings, this just not for me i see nothing amazing about it. I would much rather have a screaming ZX6R inline 4 for that price
So so much thank you for saying that, even I never liked those wings hanging around what rather would be a slick looking mean machine. Those structure may perform a function on race track but on a street bike, it just make them look Ugly as hell !!!
You're crazy. I don't disagree, but it's not stupid if it works. Yamaha CLAIMS that they add 5-6% downforce in a straight line and 10% while cornering. If the ZX6R had the same electronics package, I'd get one too.
Nothing comes close to a 1000cc inline 4. They’re definitely making the newer bikes more approachable for newer riders from what I can tell. I’ll stick to my 1k until I can’t get them anymore. The power is unmatched
I don't think you get the ideia of this "middle weight'' bikes. And also, i doubt you even use 60% of what your 1k has to offer, unless you're pro driver and I really doubt that either..
@@stuka907 I’d venture to say that the point of any bike isn’t to use 100% of the power that’s not really a good method of measurement. But for me I much prefer to not have to absolutely wring a bike out just merging onto the highway. If I’m cruising around 1-3 gear does it for me. And the power is on tap if needed. But saying oh if you aren’t using 100% isn’t realistic and a bad example for newer riderss
The curious thing about mt09 is that on paper the horsepower doesn't sound that much, but in reality it's absolutely crazy bike. There's plenty of "evidence" on youtube. Now imagine adding better aero to it, it's gonna be insane. And of course it can be tuned to have 120-130 hp with some mods.
I think people have warped a warped perspective on power figures for bikes. My first bike was an SV650 with 76hp. Doesn't sound like much, and people are calling this a "beginner bike" or even "slow". But objectively speaking, the SV650 can do 0-60 in around 3.4s or 3.5s which is faster than a lot of Porsches, Ferraris and Corvettes. Having not looked it up, I think the MT09 would be something around 3.0s. That is blisteringly quick, by any standard.
Being able to wheelie it in the low gears isn't evidence. The mt09 is gutless above 150km/h and while aero plays a part, the peak hp on the engine is 500rpm short of the revlimiter. 130 horsepower cannot be easily achieved with "some mods".
@@TomHenksYT I raced one of those new C8 corvettes at a red light on my MT-09. It was neck and neck, I didn't realize how fast the new corvettes were and told him so at the next light. He didn't realize how fast the MT-09 was, because it looks like a smaller bike lol. But yeah, below 130-150km/hr the MT-09 is absurdly fast; in the lower gears, it's instant--almost violent--torque whenever you want it. I was thinking about selling my MT-09 for an R9, but I'm just not a fan of the looks. I'd rather buy an older used supersport and just use that on days that I'm in that kind of mood/track, and keep the MT for everything else.
3:57 "The old R6 was pushing out around 117 hp so you would expect an R9 to push out 140 hp" ... why would you ? Because it has more displacement ? Did you expect the R7 to push out 130 hp too, just because 700 > 600 ? People, please use your brains and understand peak hp is not directly correlated to displacement. Many more things to consider. The R9 is a 3-cyl with a ton of torque. Not an inline-4 making power at 15k rpm.
no your absolutely right, I expected this to replace the R6 and hearing it has the same HP and more torque I was personally so glad, the weight I’m concerned about, and the gas tank capacity as well. But Yamaha delivered well with this bike
Torquey R9 I think will be a lot more relaxing than GSXR750 having its power at lower revs so if mid range grunt is your thing the triple will satisfy; but if sheer power at high revs is your thing, then its the traditional 4 pot screaming GSXR
Looks like I will be keeping my GSXR-750. Was waiting for the R9 for some time, but a year ago ended up buying the 750 after riding a 600 for the past five years. Tested a range of modern 2-cylinder bikes, but not for me especially after riding inline fours. The GSXR is a dream bike, power to weight, handling etc… Chief Road Tester, Michael Neeves raves about them. I feel that we need more sports bikes around the 135- 160 Hp with looks, tech, and character.
Go test out the r9 when it comes out, unless you don't like the look. The biggest issue with this analysis is that the gsxr750 numbers are way off. To the wheels the mt09 actually makes over 10lbft of torque MORE than the 750 and only 14hp less. That's comparing stock for stock, and when you put that into perspective it balances out the playing field quite a bit.
People that complain about horsepower are ridiculous. 1. 117HP is more than enough for the street and track 2. 99% of the people complaining about it can’t ride any bike to it’s potential, let alone a R9 😂 3. It’s gonna be a kick butt bike if that’s what you like ! Who cares what other people think…
I have a 2015 R6 and my mate has a 2015 Mt-09 and I when I ride it I can't believe how great that engine feels. Don't understand all the hate to be honest, Ive ridden both bikes quite a lot and I'm tempted to buy the R9.
MotoGP bikes use it. So it must be something useful. But you always can remove it. In the other side, people will buy aero winglets for their wingless bike.
i like the overall package of the R9, but Yamaha is playing damn safe.... if only they increase the compression ratio by a little bit + a little bit of aggressive cam timing, they could easily produce close to 140, but again, they are playing safe....
Sounds like you have knowledge on the subject, I was just reading some forum posts and it was clear the CP3 could be making around that stock if Yamaha did that themselves. As someone with a 675 daytona other thing that bothers me is the rpm, I love to rev my bike out to 14.4k, 10.5k just doesn't seem right for a sport bike. If MV can get a claimed 147hp out of their 800cc triple I don't see why yamaha couldn't get close with 90cc's more. And I disagree with the idea the motor can't take it, people turbo these motors for over 200whp. Yamaha just went cheap with the engine
economies of scale. That'd mean a separate manufacturing process for the R9 only. Like this, the keep the cost down by making the same motor for MT, Tracer and R9. I also wanted 130hp+ :(
I feel like we’ve reached a notable point in time where comparing one motorcycle to another (or even cars at this point) based on “performance” metrics is moot. Vehicles in general have come such a long way and are so damn good all around that it really comes down to getting what you like in terms of looks and feel. Power really isn’t anything anymore. I recently had WAY more fun in a rental VW GTI than I’ve had in years in other vehicles. The feel, the sounds, the on-rails handling in such a daily friendly package mattered so much more than knowing that some schmuck in a V8 mustang could “beat me” in a silly street race between stoplights. Buy what you like :)

@@JamieS1992realistically it’s much less to the wheel. I have a speed triple 1200 and it makes a claimed 180bhp and around 150 actually to the wheel. I’ve seen some mt09 dynos hit anywhere to 110-120 to the wheel, which is pretty good considering it’s not a super high revving bike
@@CorBor69 i find when you have more hp you lose more to the wheel my R6 was meant to be 116.8 from the crank i got 110hp on a dyno from the wheel stock so a loss of 7hp with all the mods etc i got 118.5hp right now the MT-09 engine is made for torque it can lose torque and add hp in the future and be around 130-140 from the crank
I have a 2023 MT 09, and I can assure you, it's a LOT faster than my wife's R6. As you did point out, it's how the power is delivered. It's wicked. Not quite as wicked as the Kawasaki Z1000 I had, but not far off in overall go. And the MT 09 is so lightweight! The real key here, as with most bikes these days, if not all, is to have the ECU reflashed by a quality tech, like VCyclenut. After the reflash, like my Z1000 before it, it transformed the beast into, well, a smoother yet significantly meaner beast. Reflash on the CP3 engine makes a great one much better. Cool to see this platform for a supersport.
Damn if people are complaining about 120 bhp. Where are y'all riding your motorcycles? To the moon? You can absolutely have a blast on a track with 50 bhp and that ridiculous torque + electronics package makes this a super attractive purchase. Of course the design is subjective as always and will have people divided but honestly people tend to forget they ride the bike, not the spec sheet.
They're riding their motorcycles in their mom's basement in their imaginations, most of them. Some of them are going to even get a license, one day. Spec sheet warriors, most of them.
some of us are just fast unlike you lads lol. these bikes miss the mark. we going backwards with this dumbed down bikes made for the casual isntagram loving selfie loving idiot , some of us are old school and can actually ride FAST without the need for help from flashy computers , we want raw power to go fast . this bike does have the R tag after all
we have reached a point of "soft " bikes for the newbies , the days are over of raw bikes , electronic helping hands to bridge the gap in skill and low power is the new norm, kinda sad for the raw riders , great for the new scared slow boys that tootle around in traffic playing by the rules all day never touching a fraction of the bikes potential . yea was hoping for a true supersport fire breathing monster R9 but we just got a re skin on the MT09 with some flashy computers for the nerds. yea ill stick with my older faster more enjoyable machine , what a shame yamaha had an oppourtunity to create a 140+hp monster but gave us a sheep dressed as a wolf .
What do people not get about this is a STREET oriented bike that will still be fun on the track IF you even take it on the track. Yamaha said over 90% of the people who buy R1s dont even take it on the track. So why, as a business, make a bike to appease the MINORITY of your WHINEY customer base?
This bike will compete perfectly in the British Supersport championship, now they allow bigger horsepower for less cylinders, the old R6 can’t compete with the Triumph 765 and the Ducati 890 v2 this triple will now shine in race results especially once its remapped and beefed up all round
lol , okay grandad , you aint touching me in the corners on ya little 117hp , and when we get to a straight you wont even see me ........just stop making shit up aye
Tech is nice to have ,when it works. You can stop, faster than ABS. The quick shifter may or may not work. Traction control can blow a fuse. Wheelie control,if it fails can kill you. People need to learn how to ride ,because target fixation is not a safety option tech !
This is an interesting one for sure. I’ve seen plenty of positive and negative reactions to the announcement of this bike. My take is this. I’m fortunate enough to own a XSR900GP and basically all of the amazing features in that bike has made it to the R9. It’s gonna be fun to ride for sure as the CP3 engine is a blast and has so much power to give when needed. I LOVE the 900GP. Aesthetics aside, this bike will be fun. In comparison with the Suzuki, I can’t say as I’ve never ridden that but you do make some valid points. I’m looking forward to see real reactions when people get on the R9. I came from an R6 and went to the XSR900GP. Love them both but the GP just feels so much better on the street.
That white and red retro scheme is beautiful, I wish more manufacturers do more vintage or classy color ways like the HRC red and this, or kawasaki 40th anniversary paint scheme.
So I definitely think Yamaha did a great job with the R9. The electronics package is perfect. I think every bike in this class should have this level of tech. But lets be honest. It'll NEVER replace the R1.
I can't believe Yamaha shares its entire exhaust system with the MT-09; the ugliest I've ever seen on a motorcycle and on full display with the abbreviated fairing design. At least they could have finished the ugly exhaust in matte black.
Been riding 5 years now, feeling ready to finance my first bike and im fairly sure i want it to be the r9, usually i grab F4is & 636s stunt em for the summers but that r9 is calling my name mannnn
Keep in mind, the GSXR is now only available in the US. It couldn't pass emissions anywhere else. So not many people in the world get to hesitate between the two. And the weight difference would be much smaller if it wasn't for the big EURO5 exhaust/cat. The GSXR is also a much older design, it's basically a 2011 bike. The R9 is gonna sell like hot cakes.
I was fully expecting the R9 to have very similar power to the MT-09 and am amazed anyone thought differently. They make bikes to a price these days and they were never going to start extreme tuning the CP-3 just for one model of bike.
I can’t believe we’ve reached the point where people want torque over a high rev engine in their supersport. So glad I picked up a 2021 ZX6R. Now, I need to find the money to grab the CBR600 (current U.S. version with analog tach) before Honda starts acting like Yamaha.
@@Backtothehat they aren't gonna act like yamaha any time soon it seems. They updated the cbr in japan and it's basically just like the older cbr but it looks better and it has tft, quickshifter, and cornering abs. There's talks that it'll be brought over for 2026
I think the price is fair since it has all of the rider assistance electronics which are a game changer for any bike. 117 HP is enough for most riders. I bought a Ducati Panigale V2 for the electronics and quick shifter, also got the extra HP, 155. But almost double the price.
People keep forgetting that pure on paper HP isn't everything. The R9 has maximum torque of like 3800rpms less compared to the GSXR. It's waaay more fun to ride on streets. The only thing the GSXR has is more top speed, but honestly who cares? Also the R9 is quite restricted out of the box, that CP3 engine can give a lot more power once tuned
117bhp is more than enough for UK roads. I ride a 150bhp and I can't use it. Having owned an mt09 with this engine it was always the perfect amount of power but poor suspension. Those who crave more power will tune these to death anyway. You want torque for the roads. No point in a high revving machine.
yea but they dont hold their value as well as a jap bike, especially yamaha. also triumph went full r-tard with the new daytona unfortunately. they give you any option you want with the street and speed line but oh no we cant have options when it comes to supersports
Stop people with I can’t use 200+ HP, keep that to yourself, some of us born in the 70’s, that rode real motorcycles with no traction control/abs, can handle and want the 200-hp Liter Bikes!!!
I’ve got a 24” gsxr1000r. That thing is psychotic and I love it. But 120 hp and 70 ft lbs isn’t anything to gawk at. The cp3 platform making 55 ft lbs at 3k rpm is enough to get folks in a pickle when they don’t expect it. At least the gsxr wait til 8 or 9 to take flight. My tracer shot into the sky at 4500 and it’s nearly 100 lbs heavier and 2 inches longer than the R9.
4 Cylinders or Thumpers. That's all I will swing my leg over. My '19 Husky 701 SM takes me back to my childhood. If only it was a 2 stroke. I was born in the 80's when bikes and men still had balls. I miss the rowdy bikes of the past that are slowly being walked behind the barn.
R9 v GSXR750! Yeah nah, you are right, but you’re wrong. Just look at the GSXR, she was great in her day. The world is moving on from halogen and we expect wings, so we can fly with phone connectivity. Also, the R9 engine makes what it makes, at much lower RPM, where I live on a daily basis….. No GSXR750 on sale where I live, so it’s academic, thanks Suzuki Aus’. Love your work, thanks Mr RR.
Before you talk the HP down.. try a MT09... it NEVER runs out of breath.! I own a 2024 model and i NEVER run out of power.. and i have owned a R6 also. You need to punish a R6 to make it move.. And who the hell would buy a budget bike (Suzuki) over a Yamaha?!
It depends: (A) what you’re buying it for (for aggressive super sport riding incl. track use, or for the super sport look and road riding), and (B) whether you’re coming up to, or down to, this power figure. If you’re coming up from a Ninja 650, or an MT-07/R7, you’ll be thrilled. If you’re coming down from a ZX-10R/GSXR then yeah, you’ll likely be left wanting a little more.
These manufacturers know whats gonna sell. Times have changed drastically. The engineers can put together low cost 20yr old engine and chasis tech, put effort into fairing design and electronic tech and people are loving it. We saw the GOLDEN ERA come and go. If euro regulations didnt force the massive surge of parallel twins to cut down on emissions we never would've believed these bikes would be in high demand. But the kids love them. If this R9 was released 20yrs ago it would've been the biggest upset in Yamaha history. As specially having it side by side with the Triumph Daytona and Speed/Street triple that were much lower costing than the supersports and superbikes.
@@Allenamenwarenschonweg exactly! A lot of people (and I mean, A LOT of people) buy supersports only to show off, or I guess there are a few that buy them because they like the look of a bike with full fairings.
@@Allenamenwarenschonweg Personally I would buy one still because I just like the look of it. A supersport looking bike with more street friendly torque and power would be right up my alley.....but that's why I already have my sport touring ADV bike....well minus the looks anyway.
The track focused electronics indicate that this bike is intended for the track and not the road. Taking that into account the performance of this bike is disappointing
I'm convinced that this will be a perfect sports bike for the road for those looking for more room, something different and useable power. Don't get me wrong, IL4 rushes, especially on litre class bikes are great, but depending where you live, which in my case in the UK, the roads are super shit, potholed, rippled and flooded mostly. There is no way we can make use of £20k litrebikes anywhere sensibly. This might be a something that is a cut above the R7.

I wanted this bike a year ago but I got tired of waiting and when a great 2016 used R1 came around, I bought it instead. People bitching about power clearly don't know much about track riding lol. This thing isn't meant to be an R6 replacement, it's supposed to stand on its own. The R6 and R1 are for the hardcore Spartan track enthusiast. This is meant to be the pinnacle of the average street-going occasional trackday rider going from R3 to R7 to eventually the R9.
"Torque is better than horsepower" 😂😂 Horsepower = torque × RPM × (some conversion constant, if applicable) It's like saying wet is always better than water 😂
Yes, exactly. Meaning you can have torque without the hp if it doesn't rev as much. And torque can be spread differently across the rpm range. My SV1000S has "only" 115hp but still makes 60ft-lbs the second I let go of the clutch. Are you gonna tell me that it's "the same" as an inline-4 600?
@jaron5958 it all depends on the final drive ratio and the gearing, which has been increased in the r9 compared to the mt, without raising the max revs.
@@YoMomsDaBombDotCom so what you're looking for is a flat torque curve. Engines that typically rev high do produce more power as they have their peak torque higher in the rev range. Whereas, similar-sized engine can have similar torque numbers at low RPM but they'll lose that volumetric efficiency (and hence torque) at high RPM; therefore, it'll make less power than the former high-revving engine. Another important thing: Torque numbers are pointless unless gearing is considered. You know how torque drops as we shift up? That's the effect I'm referring to. High-revving engines are geared shorter, and that makes up for the lower crankshaft torque numbers Better aerodynamics can allow for taller gearing. Lighter weight can allow for taller gearing. Variable valve tech can allow for taller gearing. Point is: It's a multivariate problem that cannot be simplified to torque Vs BHP It pisses me off when marketing teams just give us peak torque number without any context, but it REALLY gets me mad when self-proclaimed "experts" and journos parrot those fallacies. They're all fooling the customers
Looks like a good successor to the R6 to be honest. My only problem with it from the spec sheet is the seat height, was hoping it would be at least 33.5. Hopefully they have an option for a taller seat from the factory
That the one thing im unsure about too, until i sit on it. Sure an aftermarket seat will come right away but the body-arm position seems to be a bit shorter overall, hopefully it wont feel cramped
The GSXR 750 is a highly underrated bike. It seems like there's no hype surrounding it. As far as the new r9 goes it's a much friendlier street going sport bike. It's not really a super sport. I think overall the r9 is a better daily motorcycle 100%. The power is plenty. Another great everyday sporting bike is the Aprilia RS660.
I also have a GSXR 750 MY 2011 with akra complete and adapted mapping, 150 real horsepower and 185 kg wheight. Ten kg less than die R9. I would never change to the R9.
@@danlford You misunderstood, I meant 150 hp in the engine = 135 hp on the rear wheel. Okay? 135 hp on the rear wheel is 16 hp more than the R9 in the engine. That says enough and is for me the decisive difference. The R 9 ist really a very good modern bike, but I like the GSXR more😇.
@@yellowracer2179 My bad. To me real hp is the hp actually hitting the ground. Its all good. that extra 16 hp is all the way at the top end. the r9 is gonna make more torque and its gonna be a lot lower in the rev range. I would assume that the r9 will feel like it has just as much power up until the 120 to 130 mph range and then the 750 will probable leave it. Im not spending enough time in those speeds for that to make a difference.
@@danlford Yes, thats alright. On the street the r9 has some more torque and there will be no actual dfference to the GSXR with the advantage of the electronical devices of the R9. On the race track I prefer and appreciate the possibility of higher revs with the GSXR and in the whole the running culture and engine character of an inline four. At the end it is a question of taste and the difference between the two bikes will be slightly. For sure the R9 is the more modern bike. In respect to the slight difference between the two bikes in their performance as a whole, this is to my opinion a great compliment for the GSXR as a 13 year old bike in its construction and shows that the greatest difference is in regard to electronics and not to forget in emission regulations.😇

What matters is the CP3 will get you to 100mph just as fast as the CP4, even for track day riding (let alone the street) you rarely go over 160 mph… 117 up is plenty
suspension setup, weight, aerodynamics, rider position - if you need a good example or torque vs horsepower watch something like an sv650 at a track day against 600s and 1000s, trust me it works haha
Most of his audience rides street so I assume that’s what he’s talking about. Cause in the streets, torque is going to be more fun/ useful. Something the revs to 16k is only fun at dangerous speeds for the street, but amazing on a track
There's a pretty obvious reason why the engine "only" makes 117hp. It's because it's the same engine as in the MT-09. If they had retuned the engine to produce a lot more top-end power, it would lose some of its characteristic mid-range torque that people are so fond of, and it would also make the bike more expensive.
ikr. Really not impressed that they have been introducing completely impractical winglets for the street that makes it merely a fashion for the ordinary consumer. I think they did this on purpose too so drops are that much more expensive.

Just because MotoGP and Formula 1 have wings all over their race bikes and cars doesn't mean we want to ride around town looking like one. I'm a firm, HELL NO!
@timdavis6088 that's the same thing they said about the FZ/MT line when they first came out and those bikes sold and are still selling like hotcakes. I'm 53 this month and I love it. Putting looks aside , which us mature ol farts should be able to do, I imagine this bike is going to be a super fun street bike. Probably won't be to shabby for a track bike either.
I do- long gearing in the r9 compared to the mt in order to be track worthy ;) will hurt the torque since they did not raise the rev ceiling. Lazy adaptation.
Street guys will worry about light to light and freeway pulls. Serious track guys and racers will worry about the chassis. Hopefully the chassis won’t suck. The power will be fine.
My buddys got a 2014 fz09 it made 114 to the crank stock, he put on a full system akro got a tune at a shop they did it by hand and now he outs out 129.6 hp to the wheel. The torque went up too. That being said the R9 will indeed be faster then the R6. not to mention its got better down force and way more torque. Ppl will continue to talk shit until they start lining the R6 and R9 up at the drag strip.
Interesting comparison. On the GSXR750, the torque peak is at over 10500rpm. The R9's peak torque is at 7000rpm, I'd be curious to see how numbers compare around 4-5000rpm too. Sometimes the specs on paper doesn't say it all. With that said, it's hard to deny that the Suzuki has less weight and more power :)
People need to understand that extra hp is only going to give it more top end. If you want to sit at 180 mph go buy an R1. For everything else this bike will be faster
A triple with similar power to an in line 4 will always have more grunt lower in the rev range Would be good to see a standing 1/4 drag race against the Gixser!!
Cool looking bike with lots of electronic goodies. I guess it comes down to personal preference? If I was going to replace my ancient 06 GSXR1000, I would go with the GSXR750. More HP & less weight makes that an easy decision.
Suzuki is outdated in every regard. They would be comparable if Suzuki bring an updated 750, which is shame they didn't. Legendary bike like GSXR750 deserves to be alive. It is available in USA, but here in Europe sales are stoped long time ago. R9 looks the business.
The GSXR-750 is a traditional supersport. The R9 has positioned itself has a hybrid (sport // supersport) with about the same power as the gsxr-750 and more (modern) features than the gsxr-750. The GSXR-750 will be less torquey down low (relatively), but still the twitchy supersport everyone knows and loves at the top of the rev range with the same familiar 4 cylinder melody. The R9 will be a toruey-er street bike that packs a punch and is highly trackable. Ironically, the gsxr-750 and the yamaha r9 are most likely going to be opposite to what one would intuitively expect in terms of riding position. It is likely that r9 will have a more aggressive stance (seating position) and be more ready to more willingly lean over in the corners. I think the Yamaha positions itself as a good alternative to the gsxr-750, rather than a replacement to the R6, and a more powerful R7. The main question one has to ask themself is if one wants a more traditional supersport (gsxr600, zx-6r, cbr600, gsxr750, R1, cbr1000, etc.) or if one wants something in between - a hybrid - the R9.
Man, you need to not knock it til you try it. 99% of average riders will ride better on the r9 than the Gixxer. The little bit of weight savings and power isn't going to make up for everything else it has going for it.
I was expecting Yamaha to tune up the HP. But no complaints about 117hp. The CP3 is a torquey engine with a strong mid-range. I think it'll be one of the best sport bikes for the street. If I didn't have my GSXR750, I'd buy it, no question. I just can't let go of my beloved Gixxer.
The cp3 is torquy in the mt because it is combined with a short gearing. However the Gering if the r9 is longer in order to reach higher top speed, which will seriously hurt that feeling since they did not add more revs to compensate.
I just dont get the whole mediabuzz around the R9. Everbody is reporting with a big question mark or negative oppinions. Ignoring the unneeded winglets, its exactly what i expected and wanted. I knew they werent going to put a new exhaust on it or change the engine. I just wanted a nice sportbike for the streets that isnt underpowered and doesnt push me in the illegal zone all the time like my R1 does….. And everyone who has ridden the MT-09 knows how awesome the motor is, as it is. I didnt wish for more.
It’s funny that nobody seems to realize that the R6 made the exact same horsepower numbers but with a lot less torque. The R9/MT09 cp3 makes 70 ft/lbs. it’s going to be a better bike plain and simple. With new gearing and a new gravity fed cast frame…it’ll walk on the R6 all day. This bike was meant to be a track worthy STREET focused motorcycle. The price is very reasonable for what it is.
Inline 4 engines will always have more peak torque and hp than parallel twins. And if you do the math, the r9 has about 50% more torque than the r7 because it's 50% bigger with the same engine layout. It's not complicated. And as a street bike it has the perfect amount of power.
Well, the GSXR is a old bike, and on top of that, its only sold in Japan and the USA right now due to emissions. In Europe, the only rivals to the R9 are the CBR 600RR and the ZX6R, both have the same power, but less torque, and are arguably the better track weapons. And the R9 will be the better public road option.
My primary bike is a Honda xr650L 50ish hp my other bike is a tw200. With that being said people will complain about hp because you will outgrow it. It happens to everyone even if you suck you will eventually get better as You put down over 9-11k miles you will become better and used to it and search for more HP. Unfortunately when you go looking for that street legal r1 it won’t be there new and you’ll switch over to a gsxr or Ducati etc. I think Yamaha should have kept the r1 legal.
What do you guys think, is 117 horsepower enough for a $12,500 bike? Would you pick this over the 148 horsepower GSXR750?
I'd buy a gsxr over the r9 but we no longer get the 750 in Aus.
I'm seriously considering an r9 still though.
Tbh i prefer R6 and to me the horsepower is imported
This bike has to be the biggest disappointment in recent memory. Really I wasn't surprised at all, just the hopium had me delusional. A GSXR 750 will stomp this thing hard and will most likely last twice as long. This is how things are now.
The other flaw is the price.
My mt09 or this r9 for the streets...
Definitely the gsxr 750 on track or big open road...
Anybody else like the black/yellow gsxr
117 is plenty of power to have fun? Bro. 40 is plenty have fun. 70 is plenty to get rowdy. 100 is plenty to off yourself. 117 is NOT a shortage of power
absolutely lol. people are so worried about spec sheets these days when most riders cant max out a ninja 400s performance in anything other than a straight line. start keeping up with me through corners then we will talk power numbers.
@@eksnacks6030fr
for real. I ride a 2015 R3 which makes maybe 42 crank HP. its a whole lot of fun. idk how id react to a bike with nearly 3x the power.

I don't disagree, but it's not stupid if it works. Yamaha CLAIMS that they add 5-6% downforce in a straight line and 10% while cornering. If the ZX6R had the same electronics package, I'd get one too.
Not as absolutly wierd like the new ducati V4. I saw it in person and didnt know if i was looking at a airplane ot a bike.
Nothing comes close to a 1000cc inline 4. They’re definitely making the newer bikes more approachable for newer riders from what I can tell. I’ll stick to my 1k until I can’t get them anymore. The power is unmatched

Yes, due to a short gearing, which is not so short on the r9
@@Allenamenwarenschonweg oh true that can help
3:57 "The old R6 was pushing out around 117 hp so you would expect an R9 to push out 140 hp"
... why would you ?

Hey, nothing wrong with your GSXR750, but some people like more torque, & bells & whistles.
Don’t worry about it, until you try it 🤙😎
Go test out the r9 when it comes out, unless you don't like the look.
1. 117HP is more than enough for the street and track
2. 99% of the people complaining about it can’t ride any bike to it’s potential, let alone a R9 😂
3. It’s gonna be a kick butt bike if that’s what you like !

i like the overall package of the R9, but Yamaha is playing damn safe.... if only they increase the compression ratio by a little bit + a little bit of aggressive cam timing, they could easily produce close to 140, but again, they are playing safe....
They want this bike to last longer...
They are playing to new Euro Specs.....it is pointless to make several bikes that will not be within. Euro 5 emission specs.
economies of scale. That'd mean a separate manufacturing process for the R9 only. Like this, the keep the cost down by making the same motor for MT, Tracer and R9. I also wanted 130hp+ :(
They just maximize the Profit margin

I think the price is fair since it has all of the rider assistance electronics which are a game changer for any bike. 117 HP is enough for most riders. I bought a Ducati Panigale V2 for the electronics and quick shifter, also got the extra HP, 155. But almost double the price.
Exactly, double the price!!
And you’re married to Ducati proprietary!
Yamaha is open source everything.
117hp out of 890cc is pathetic. My Triumph Daytona moto2 is 765cc, and gets 128. I get 11 more hp, with 125cc less.

SUZUKI is way better made than YAMAHA.
I have a GSXR1000 and am really not thinking of changing...
Bro don't change gsxr is the best bike
They try to convince us to think the ugly is beauty, less power is better etc
I miss ur videos, hope there's more to come!!!
117 HP for on the road, is more then plenty of power.
The public road is not a a racing track.
So why buy a supersport then ????
@@Allenamenwarenschonweg exactly! A lot of people (and I mean, A LOT of people) buy supersports only to show off, or I guess there are a few that buy them because they like the look of a bike with full fairings.
@@Allenamenwarenschonweg Personally I would buy one still because I just like the look of it. A supersport looking bike with more street friendly torque and power would be right up my alley.....but that's why I already have my sport touring ADV bike....well minus the looks anyway.
when you ride 5 hp 50 cc bike trust me it is even worse than racetrack 😂🍿
The track focused electronics indicate that this bike is intended for the track and not the road. Taking that into account the performance of this bike is disappointing
I'm convinced that this will be a perfect sports bike for the road for those looking for more room, something different and useable power. Don't get me wrong, IL4 rushes, especially on litre class bikes are great, but depending where you live, which in my case in the UK, the roads are super shit, potholed, rippled and flooded mostly. There is no way we can make use of £20k litrebikes anywhere sensibly. This might be a something that is a cut above the R7.
A cut above the R7 lol

Miss Christina Ann Tucker is a remarkable individual whom has brought immense positivity and inspiration into my life.
I got started with a miserly $1500. The results have been mind blowing I must say TBH!!
"Torque is better than horsepower"
😂😂
Horsepower = torque × RPM × (some conversion constant, if applicable)
It's like saying wet is always better than water 😂
Useable power. 55 ft lbs available at 3k rpm. That’s great. At the end of the day it’s a street bike.
Then you haven't felt the torque of a hayabusa, which makes less hp than RSV4, V4S, R1M, S1K. I'd delete this comment.
Another important thing:
Torque numbers are pointless unless gearing is considered.
You know how torque drops as we shift up? That's the effect I'm referring to.
High-revving engines are geared shorter, and that makes up for the lower crankshaft torque numbers
Better aerodynamics can allow for taller gearing.
Lighter weight can allow for taller gearing.
Variable valve tech can allow for taller gearing.
Point is:
It's a multivariate problem that cannot be simplified to torque Vs BHP
It pisses me off when marketing teams just give us peak torque number without any context, but it REALLY gets me mad when self-proclaimed "experts" and journos parrot those fallacies. They're all fooling the customers
If I was in the market I'd get one. Much better bike for the street than any inline 4.

Looks like a good successor to the R6 to be honest. My only problem with it from the spec sheet is the seat height, was hoping it would be at least 33.5. Hopefully they have an option for a taller seat from the factory
Same for me. There isn’t many sport bikes for us 6’2+ riders unless we go full liter bike.
@yellowracer2179 real fake. Put it on a dyno and you'll cry yourself to sleep. Moores mafia tuned a 24' 750 and could barely squeeze 136 hp out of it.
@@danlford lol not all bikes are equal , my k8 750 has 143 to the wheel bud on the most honest dyno in the country , cope all you want , blame dyno all you want , the truth is out there go find it in person
I have a 21’ MT09 and 22’ MT10. One is nimble hornet and the other is a heavier torque and hp beast. I can do almost 160mph on the 09. What matters is the CP3 will get you to 100mph just as fast as the CP4, even for track day riding (let alone the street) you rarely go over 160 mph… 117 up is plenty
If torque is better than horse power why aren't Harleys track bikes
I don't know if you heard about MotoAmerica King of the Baggers, but they turned those monstrosities into race bikes. 😆
@magellanicspaceclouds I've heard about it yes but that's a different class of race
suspension setup, weight, aerodynamics, rider position - if you need a good example or torque vs horsepower watch something like an sv650 at a track day against 600s and 1000s, trust me it works haha
Most of his audience rides street so I assume that’s what he’s talking about. Cause in the streets, torque is going to be more fun/ useful. Something the revs to 16k is only fun at dangerous speeds for the street, but amazing on a track
because they are whales. Weight is everything. Even 50hp engine is gonna feel like a rocket in bicycle frame
Dude those wings are so ugly 💀
ikr. Really not impressed that they have been introducing completely impractical winglets for the street that makes it merely a fashion for the ordinary consumer. I think they did this on purpose too so drops are that much more expensive.
@@ThermicLightjust makes it way more expensive to replace for the eventual drop, and considering so many people buy the ZX6R as their first bike there will be a lot of first timers buying R9s

GSXR (I'm not a fan) are some of the best value per $ bikes on the road.
What in the Sam hell are these people thinking? That has to be the ugliest Yamaha I've ever seen in my 50+ years on this planet! It's like 2004 was the last year that manufactures were still including aesthetics and form in their designs. Now, well I just don't know what to say about that design.
I am against wings too but R9 has the best looking wings out there, because they are incorporated into the form with those vertical bridges.
looks like we finally have mt09r :)
The CP3 is a rocket, I don't see the problem here
I do- long gearing in the r9 compared to the mt in order to be track worthy ;) will hurt the torque since they did not raise the rev ceiling.
What you’re not seeing here is Dyno graph overlays and gear ratio comparisons. The R9 is going to be dynamic, fun, and dangerous!
Can’t forget about the F3 making 155 hp and 64.9 ft lbs of torque
People need to understand that extra hp is only going to give it more top end. If you want to sit at 180 mph go buy an R1. For everything else this bike will be faster
The R1 does 100-200 km/h in about 4 seconds. The R9 will be in the 7-8s maybe. So the R1 has twice the acceleration which is pretty significant
Sadly suzuki dont seem to care about their 4cyl bikes anymore.
A triple with similar power to an in line 4 will always have more grunt lower in the rev range
Would be good to see a standing 1/4 drag race against the Gixser!!
Down low in the revs the triple will haul ass. That motor is super punchy
Finally a sports bike for the real world.
The biggest problem this bike has is that the GSXR 750 exist.
