Tuner comparison

  • In this video I demonstrate how the built-in tuner compares to 2 other tuners. I am comparing it to my Boss TU-15 handheld tuner and the built-in tuner on my Yamaha NTX700 semi-electric guitar. The tuner is pretty darn accurate! And it will also allow for non-standard tuning, so long as you can get yourself in the ballpark for the correct note! Thanks!

Hi Andy, good man, it was something that crossed my mind so I did check with my two tuners. The tuner should be accurate in this 'day and age' but an inquisitive mind needs to be reassured, lol. Thanks again 👍

Got a notification about a new demo of the clean amps, and...OOPS!! It was pretty exciting, right up to where it isn’t there anymore, hahaa! 😂 I’m sure there’s a reason, I’ll be looking for it! Thanks again for these tutorials!

Try it with a stroboscopic tuner. My Peterson Stroboclip HD and Sonic Research ST-200 show that it is within 2 cents either way. It's fine for a Chromatic tuner and compares to a Snark, Pitch Black etc but goes solid green when it's about 2 cents off.

John Aurentz that sounds fair John! I don’t have any stroboscopic tuners... :( I guess it is more safe to say that it is fairly accurate within the margin of error of the less-than-perfect tuners that I typically use! That said, I don’t think my ears are sensitive enough for two cents... feels like there a joke to be had there somewhere too! Haha

@@sparkamptutorials2169 It's certainly good enough as compared to all my different Chromatic tuners.

Yeah I’m fine with a 2 cent margin of error, if an instrument is 2 cents out of tune I can’t tell, for me it has to be about 5 cents off to notice a difference

Thanks, good info to know. As a spark owner, I’d guess most spark owners have found the user’s manual to be mostly, a waste of paper. The tuner feature isn’t explained at all in the manual. Nice amp, lousy manual.

Yes it is, it's described in the quick start guide you get on paper in the box. The manual is a PDF you get online. It's on the first line...

Ok...call me crazy but when I plug in my Martin to tune it it matches the guitar tuner but when I plug in my SG tHe Spark shows it flat. When I tune it up it doesn’t match my Martin. Help please

Very interesting, and not something I would have thought to compare, myself, as I've found the best clip-on tuner for my personal needs. Since I often find myself needing to gig, or even just play, with a solidbody or semihollow guitar or a 4- or 5-string solidbody or acoustic bass, I found the clip-on that works well with all of them - the TC Electronic...damn...I'll have to add the model here later. It's the long, flat, rectangular one, and it's polyphonic, like their footpedal tuner, and it's far and away the best clip-on of them all. Like a lot of them, it has a "Bass Mode," as well as a single note, "Monotone Mode." However, the best thing about it is that it *DOES* work perfectly with the low B-string on all of my 5-string basses, *WITHOUT* having to play the 12th fret harmonic, like the rest of the do. It's a little spendy for a clip-on tuner, but I don't know of any other one that can do everything the TCE does. However, it good to know I can count on the Spark's if I ever need it!

Thanks for the thoughtful response on this James! I was just curious about how it compared to the tuners that I was used to using. It seemed worth checking out! I think I got the idea when someone else said they didn’t use the tuner because they thought it wasn’t accurate. Then someone else said it probably wouldn’t do non-standard tuning. Then I got to thinking... well I can just find out! I have never tried a clip on tuner, but you definitely piqued my interest!

Spark Amp Tutorials oops! Another mini novel comment, sorry. But I think it’s info you may need. Or not. If you don’t, just skip It, my feelings won’t be hurt. So...I’ve been with the first one who didn’t think it would be accurate, etc. What’s really stupid on my part was making an assumption that wasn’t based on any facts at all! I have 4 guitar amps, 5 bass amps, and a TON of effects and/or pedalboards that have built-in tuners, but I never use them because I’m usually wireless, meaning that I have been known to jump off the stage and rock over to the far side of the room, where a young lady has piqued MY interest! Having a clip-on right there on the headstock lets me tune on my way back to the stage, instead of making everyone wait until I get to my amp to tune up! Hahaa..
BTW, the model name of the clip-on tuner I mentioned is: the TC Electronic Polytune Clip-On Guitar Tuner, and they go for around $49, or less when they go on sale. They also make a monophonic model for $30, The polyphonic is very accurate to 0.02 cents when in Strobe mode, and 0.05 cents in Chromatic. Like most higher end clip-ons it’ll tune to flats, but it also has a Capo Mode. So if you tell it which fret your capo is on you don’t have to transpose the notes of each open string. Finally, one of the best things about it is that it changes from single string, single note, chromatic Strobe tuning, to Polyphonic just by strumming all six strings at once. It immediately “feels” two or more strings being played, then changes the display from showing the note’s “letter” (like Gb, A#, and so on, to a row of what looks like 6 faders, or sliders on a recording console, except they represent your guitar’s strings. If the “fader” is in the middle, that string is in tune. Above the middle is sharp, and below the middle are flat. Then, once the Poly Mode has you in the ballpark you can switch to the ultra-accurate mode, just pluck one string. That’s all! It “feels” one note so it automatically switches over to one note at a time for you.
