I have to remind myself this generation didn’t grow up watching cable tv or even listening to radio. They had streaming services with a million options. At their age I was aware of the previous generations pop culture and media because it was still aired on reruns and I only had so many options to watch. They had a totally different experience.
I can’t recommend Living Single enough! It was Friends before Friends (seriously, Friends was accused of ripping off this show because a lot of the dynamics and situations and even a couple of episodes, like the Thanksgiving thing, were so similar; even some of the characters had uncanny parallels: Synclair = a sweeter, more innocent Phoebe, Kyle = a much smarter, far less goofy, sassier, metrosexual cross between Joey and Chandler, and Regine = a more independent, sassy, gold digger version of Rachel), but it only ran half as long because the other show just trampled it in the ratings. LS was very successful, just not in the Juggernaut weight class. It is a much more clever and intelligent show, however, and unlike Friends it mostly has aged very well! There aren’t nearly as many modern-offensive gags or storylines here, and the only one I can think of is handled with attitude and grace enough to make it timeless (complete with a credits song from Queen Latifah to drive the point home). It’s also incredibly funny, and easily one of the 90’s best underrated sitcom gems.
