Hello, Ex Volkswagen salesman here! I left VW just as these were coming out and a launch spec was my last demonstrator. I hated the seats which were uncomfortable and unsupportive, but the silliest thing was, when you see a T-Roc parked next to Golf you realise how little it was” raised” when you compare the rooflines.
What do you sell now?

Personally I think these are the same size of the Seat Arona. The Ateca is a lot bigger. Personally I’d rather have the Skoda I’ve just ordered.

It’s the Yaris Verso of the modern day: a car for people who are looking forward to the day they die so it’ll give them something to do.
@@Fc-cb3tn The yaris verso had some practical merit (large boot, up to 1067 l. with the rear seats down). The T-roc has none that I can think of.
I don't like Crossovers either, but i can understand why People buy them. They sell like Hotcakes here in Germany and are apparently very reliable according to TÜV Statistics (Germany's very strict Car Control by the State which doesn't let you drive your Car anymore if it doesn't fit all the Laws) - basically the opposite of the USA where you can apparently drive any Car even it is a Danger to other Drivers and about to fall apart on the Highway

Recently I heard someone say: "We bought an SUV because we needed the cargo space!" ...I was almost laughing!
Ah yes, all the vast cargo space of a... car.
They have a point. A T roc as more cargo space than a Golf.
Raised cars have larger volumes than their equivalents, while keeping the same length.
A T-Roc will have less volume than a Golf station wagon, but that will be longer.
The main issue is fuel consumption. The T-Roc will have a larger fuel consumption than the Golf, given the same engine and gearbox.

The sad thing is that cars like this killed the MPV and mini MPV. The MPV may not have been exciting but they were at least designed and engineered to be practical family transport. Now the supermini, the hatchback and saloon are under threat by fashion.
I think the older people like these because they're easy to get into but for some reason they don't have the whiff of stannah stairlift to them like a Ford Fusion, Honda Jazz or Citroen Berlingo does. At least not yet. I think part of what we hate about them is the pretentiousness of them, selling them as more versatile and more spacious than a hatchback when they're nothing of the sort, whereas MPV's actually are more useful.
@@PetrolTaster The original Berlingo and Kangoo are excellent examples of simple utilitarian design lacking today. I don't think crossovers are inherently bad. The Skoda Yeti was a prime example of how a crossover should be done. Ironically Skoda have taken a step backwards since.
@@Subcat001 Yep I would rather - and do own - one of the original Kangoo's - a 2008 1.5 Dci Expression and they are still far superior to any of these SUV's that you can use as a car, van, mini-camper etc and far more room inside the Kangoo as well.
Exactly what Chris Harris said. The MPV was a smart concept designed by clever people. Maximising space and practicability and offering a car like experience in terms of driving and cost so people could get around buying large busses or vans. The SUV or crossover seems to do nothing particular well and more of a "worst of" compilation.
@@YouThana the declining value of automotive journalism and the demands of emerging markets have stifled innovation. No one has to make a great family car like the Mk1 Focus anymore. They only have impress people with equipment and a pseudo SUV driving experience.
Yes, you’re 100% right about these kind of cars. And the T-Roc convertible really looks like a bath tub, especially in white.
Just paint the convertible in NATO green and you have a modern version of the THING (VW 181).
I like the cabrio version .. looks like a modern beach buggy (which has always resembled a bath tunb😅)

James, in Canada VW discontinued the estate models in order to bring to the public "What they want". We even had an all road version of the Golf estate that was exactly like you mentioned. CUV and SUV's will be the death of us all. Thank you for your public rant. It validating our shared view.
Skoda killed Fabia Estate, which made almost half of the models production, for Kamiq...
I loved the Alltrack. Even 8 year old ones with around 200k are still going for about $17,000. They were decently popular here!
@@SeanRosairo i love the all track basically a higher golf estate. Like the Audi Allroad. Which i incidentally love as well. We don't need SUVs or worse CUVs. Their headlights are not aimed properly and blind drivers of ordinary cars.
@@kowkes My theory is that some manufacturers aim their lights at the smaller cars so they can push people to the higher margin SUVs with cheaper build and interior quality. People think they must cost more to make but the material and labour cost is minimal and they can charge $3000 more at the least.
A while back I saw a golf alltrack in green, which was exactly the same color I had on my golf gti before I moved on from it. I just stood there and thought, what a lovely person, who bought the right thing in the right color.
What Grind my gears the most about the t-rock being a ”higher golf” is that we already had one, the golf alltrack. More spacious, better towing capacity and way better mileage.
All crossovers are positively hideous and we won't look upon them particularly fondly in 25-30 years.

Apart from the supercar and sports brands, it's extremely difficult to think of any current mainstream car that will become sought after in time.

The Alfa Romeo 164 Q4 Cloverleaf, the 156+147 GTA, the 159 Q4. The Golf R32 and Passat R36, even the bloody Rover 75 came with a V6. Now all we get are turbocharged 4s that aren't anywhere near as smooth and are quite frankly gritty and coarse.

Is the VW T-Roc really that bad for UK Customers? I'm surprised by that because here in Germany these are really popular and rarely have Issues since Release.
Makes me wonder if the ones going to the UK have some Difference about them or if it's something like the USA where German Brands can really get a bad Reputation just because of the Dealers of said Brands as well as certain Cultural Differences like how in the USA being punctual for your Oil Changes is rarely done punctually and the Owners then blame the Brand for their Car making Issues.

@@chartreux1532 it’s not inherently “bad” in the UK. In fact, it’s quite popular. The only issue with it is that it’s a tremendously boring car.

Completely agree, I find most VWs very bland. The 70s Scirocco was ok.
Unfortunately Jay, you are among the few youtubers and journalist which has a critical approach. The wast majority of them seam to be in a competition of praises every time a new cross over is launched. This is something that makes me very sad, because the critical spirit is gone in the people around this industry (in the consumers it's completely dead). And this will one lead to more cars of questionable styling and quality. Much appreciate this review!

What’s your central heating system? If it’s not Bronze are you sheeple? Not really, you’re just not into plumbing or tech. You got the central heating that heats your house, who cares about the rest. You got the laptop that browses the internet and plays your videos, who cares about whether you can switch out your ports for the more modern ones. Chris Harris effing hates them and says so at every opportunity. So does Hagerty. But yeah the more that say it the better, I guess. Although all auto manufacturers listen to is the great unwashed flocking to buy the horrid things - maybe that will change with the ebb of cheap PCP plans and finance now interest rates have risen.

Thankyou for once again speaking my mind mate! The manufacturers need to listen to us. We don't want a small suv that's compromised in every way. We want small hatches, saloons, estates, 2 seaters full size proper 4x4 heavy tow vehicles.
That's not what new car buyers want it seems, the manufacturers are just following the market. They don't care what peope who buy their cars at 8 years old want.
I hate these sorts of cars but have to accept the NPCs love them.

Much as I want to agree with you, unfortunately the reality is that people really do want this kind of car, for image if nothing else. For them, big luxury 4x4s like Range Rovers are too environmentally unfriendly, supercars and sportscars are for pagans, hatchbacks are for yoofs and saloons are for sales reps, not for successful mum. So naturally they went for a mishmash of everything. And they seemed to be fawning over these crossovers.

Worked in automotive sales for a few years and I totally agree, so unnecessary the want to be higher up. Awful to see people buying suv/cross over's when there is no need 95% of the time; especially when an estate has a similar footprint, more space and better driving characteristic's. And as you said people are buying these at a phenomenal rate, boggles the mind
It's not for you to say what other people need or "should" want - that's their business. By all means criticize their choices, but be aware that your opinion is irrelevant.
Depreciation. An SUV has better residuals because the masses want them, whereas a saloon or estate loses value precipitously. So you end up buying an SUV because everyone else does.

The whole crossover boom probably wouldn't bother me quite as much if it didn't cause automakers to scrap sedans, my beloved convertibles, and other body styles altogether.
Also, killer job on the thumbnail. It's pretty much me when I see another friend or family member's purchased a crossover.
Sedans or saloons as they're called are just stupid. Unless they have a hatchback they're a waste of time.

Spot on. I've been ranting for the exact same reasons. You're not alone. The real horror for me is that the second-hand market will be flooded with this kind of dross, and I will struggle to find my next taxi in a few years.
Very well said, seriously the SUV's/Crossover obsession is pure madness... they serve no purpose outside of inflating egos and somehow making money for car-makers. Also cosidering that, apart for a few models wich are actually minivans in disguise, almost all of these are just more polluting variants of their better "normal" car counterparts i think it's even immoral to keep pushing to market and sell this kinds of vehicles for the masses.
Yep CO2 emmissions from cars have actually gone up on average despite the advances in engine technology due to the added weight and brick like aerodynamics of these SUVs and Crossovers.
CROSSOVERS look like a hatchback on TESTOSTERONE or SUV on ESTROGEN and never really accomplish much .

@@georgevavoulis4758 When I think of an SUV I think of something that is highly capable across all terrain on and off road, things like the Toyota Land Cruiser, Land Rover Defender and other old school Land Rovers that were rugged and capable vehicles at all times. Crossovers and some of these modern SUVs are a joke and go against all that an SUV is suppossed to be. When you see big SUVs with 22inch wheels and low profile tyres you see an SUV thats been ruined in an attempt to improve on road handling but in reality makes the ultimate compromise.

I play a game with my partner because of all the cross-over/SUVs on the road, especially when it's the big ones, where we look at how many people are actually in them. usually just the one person driving the biggest car they possibly can as a status symbol
I play a similar game when I encounter them coming towards me down British B roads but it usually entails me shouting something like - "If your car's too big for you get something smaller you can handle!" as I teeter towards the ditch/hedge because they're straddling the white line with acres of space on their nearside with no idea how wide their vehicle is and how to position it. 🙄
They don't even offer more space inside though

Yeah - I bought my '05 Sequoia in 2021 because I needed the status boost. Well that, and to compensate for my micropenis.
What you might not see, when you pass me and I'm alone, is the 4 bales of hay and 140 pounds of sweet cob in the back. Factory tinted windows doncha know.
But you're probably right, in that a significant portion of big SUVs are 100% under utilized. Never full, never need 4wd, never a tow vehicle. I can honestly say mine is full a reasonable amount of time, lives 1/3 of a mile from pavement, and occasionally is used at 95% of rated towing capacity.
However, it seems like it's the modern way to paint with the widest roller you can find, when it comes to putting down other folks.
I hope that whatever you're driving, it gives you joy, and meets your needs. Whether that be a 3/4 ton pickup, a Porsche 911 GT3, or a Nissan Leaf.
Fantastic video Jay and very well said. I have been saying this about the ‘Troc’ and people don’t believe me. I worked on a few of these fitting cameras. The quality of these is really poor behind the scenes. Honestly I worked on a 260k SsanYong Rexton and it didn’t feel much worse in the plastic quality stakes. Yes - it does feel ‘premium’ ish on the bits you touch but it’s very much a vase of style over substance with new VWs and they are very much flogging crap under the illusion that younare getting premium. They are absolutely average to point the of mind numbingly and if a T-reg Nissan Almera drive past it would seem very exciting! And I absolutely HATE the new touch screen controls. They’re unsafe, temperamental and stupid. There’s nothing wrong with dials and knobs.
When the touch screen fails - goes blank - take out a bank loan !
Just spent a week in a cousin of the T Rock (Seat Arona) and my family and I managed to live. The fact it was a rental made it clear that although the sat nav was useable, and 2 large suitcases and 1 & a half squashy bags go in the boot, I remember a Fiat 127 could fit 6 people! With 2 rucksacks and snacks back in 1975....
And in the event of an accident, the village would have a few hundred pounds of ground beef, ah, the good old days.
Arnold Shark as they're known locally :) However 32 mpg from the trip computer is pretty dismal. So many people have been chased off diesels for various reasons but those compression ignition lumps do know how to eek out a gallon. So enjoyed that James.
59mpg my diesel punto did today on stretches. Ive seen 70+mpg if you stick behind a van at juuuuust the right distance on a good day. Diesel is still excellent for highway cruising i think.
@@karsnoordhuis4351 got a 1.6 TDCI Fiesta it does 55mpg anywhere driving however. If I was to actually drive slower it would be 65+ especially cruising at constant speed.
In Germany Diesels still sell very well and you see them everywhere. I know in the US they got rare, though were pretty uncommon before as i understand.
Same here in Estonia. A lot of diesel cars and they even cost more than petrol cars. I believe it's all because of such high prices for fuel. I myself have a diesel Ford focus 1.6 from 2006. It's got excellent mileage.
ref diesel economy - not great on my 3l V6 Jeep GC CRD!!!, thats pretty bad on diesel, but I dont care now I've seen how bad that horror show is on fuel
Nah. I'll stick with my 3.0 V6 Mondeo barge thanks. My trip computer's currently showing 30.1mpg. 32mpg from a 1.5 TSI is absolutely shocking
Since you mentioned “the elderly” and dropping in, from my little experience when helping with someone’s elderly mother with hip replacements, she found the low car easier to get in and out. I had a MINI cooper and a Nissan Pathfinder and she preferred the MINI. Now, myself have a back problem and having to step up into a crossover is worse than just dropping into a regular sedan.
But, if you suffered with arthritis especially in spine and hips these cars make life much easier getting in and out of. No stepping up or down, just slide in.
It depends on the person. We used to have an Alhambra and a Focus. My mum's mum couldn't get down into the Focus and my dad's dad couldn't get up into the Alhambra. Admittedly, that's a very small sample, but I think it illustrates that "the elderly" aren't homogeneous.
I realise I'm a year late but YT put this video in my recommendations.
My mother required double hip and double knee replacement but surgeons declined her as she was unsuitable for surgery for other health reasons. She hated the drop down into the seats of my dad's BMW, but liked my Toyotas with the higher seating position. She found climbing up and in much easier. My dad tho had knee replacement and preferred dropping down into a seat. I've always preferred a higher seating position (and have arthritis in multiple joints), and if you put the Toyota seats right up then you can see so much more. I was surprised about his comment re: seeing the kerb and manouvres as, in toyota, you can see the front of bonnet and the kerbs no problem
I swear this is true. Never driven or been in one but met a friend in a car park the other day getting in one and I said something like "whats it like i like the look of that" and he said "its rubbish and going back end of lease next week and sticking with our other car, a golf" 🙂 ! We were both heading off so no time to discuss why he didn't like it.

They buy them because the margins on them are bigger so the entire marketing budget of pretty much all manufacturers goes into promoting them.

Fully agree with your opinions on crossovers. I really cannot see what the point of them is. They gain no interior space over the hatchback on which they are based and I have come across many with less. Also, because they are taller, they tend to be worse on fuel economy as the Troc proves only too well - 33mpg for a modern car of this size is disgraceful. I have just spent the last 2 weeks in a diesel Astra estate which, at 4.7m long, is not a small car. I am not of fan of it and I think it was designed by a committee with no actual interest in cars, but it was comfy enough and, in around 800 miles of mainly motorway driving it averaged nearly 64mpg. My own car is a 2.0 diesel Citroen MPV with acres of interior space and even that gives me around 45mpg in normal mixed use.

You don't see more. All you're doing is increasing blind spots all around, not just the sides. But I guess they have to upsell that 360 camera somehow...
Also: they made the kind of Golf you mention. It was first called the Golf Plus. Then it was the Golf Sportswagon. Then it was binned.
And by upselling that camera, the dealers will no doubt make more money on each one they sell…

Sorry Jay. But that seatbelt bong made this possibly the funniest video you've uploaded 😂 it's actually just brightened a bad day for me.. So thank you for that! Crazy thing is it's probably merely a micro switch in the seatbelt clasp that needs a good bum fluff clean out... However a week of this (max) and I'd end up killing it with fire.

It sounds like the chime of a piece of medical monitoring equipment. Perhaps it's a necessary feature to remind the driver that they are still alive, albeit barely.
My passat and Jetta would do that when i placed a charging phone on the passenger seat. Unplug it and its fine. Something weird about the seat sensor.
Couldn't agree more, however, with 1 caveat. I have a Skoda Yeti 170tdi 4x4 that I've had since new (2012). It's genuinely capable off-road having the "off-road" button & rough road package, & despite being shorter than a Golf, it has a 416 litre boot before you start sliding the seats forward, with the rear seats removed it's 1760 litres, fold the front passenger seat & it's a huge 2100 litres, & gets regularly used in this format. On winter tyres it has no problem climbing a local 1 in 5 20% hill in 5" of snow & it'll tow 2 tons, all capabilities I've used many times. The practicality is obviously aided by the (to me) very agreeable tonka toy 4x4 looks with its completely vertical rear & as a result you can stand or sit under the open tailgate when changing muddy boots etc. in the rain, so it's brilliantly practical for lifestylee types. Skoda lost the plot replacing it with the Karoq/Kamiq combination which, while being award winning cars (somehow), lost much of this inherent "Yetiness" that to me is central to its apeal. Mine's also remapped with Eibach springs, Bilstein dampers & Brembo brakes James, so it's fairly quick of you fancy a go. Not as quick as my Audi S3 true, but as the steering's nicer than the S3's & it's a manual, it's a far better pedal than its looks might suggesst, & in 152k miles, it's never missed a beat. Best car I've ever owned. Whilst I'm not really a fan of these new Crossovers because the majority don't justify their extra bulk or running costs with added capabilities, they do share 1 thing with the Yeti though, I don't need to curl up to get in!
Hi Jay, Thanks for the review. I find myself agreeing whole heartedly with your comments about the T-ROC! I can't see any real selling point for the Cross-Over class as a whole, especially if they are still 2WD and small 'economical' engines. It's a half-way house that has almost no redeeming features!
Having said all this I will say I do appreciate being higher up, I'm an ex-lorry driver and I got used to the excellent views from lorry cabs and the more upright seating position that they have also. I now drive the bigger brother of the T-Roc the SEAT Tarraco with the 2.0Ltr 150ps TDi diesel and 4WD. It replaced a Passat 2.0TDi Estate car for towing our caravan. Not only does it do that extremely well, I find the more upright seating far more comfortable for long journeys. I can drive 500 miles in a day and still feel fresh at the end of it in the Tarraco, while I would be exhausted and have serious back ache when doing the same in the Passat.

I find it crazy that today I walk in to the VW dealer and don't see any golf 8 in the showroom, just T-cross, taigo, T-roc, Tiguan facelift and a passat from 2015 with some facelifts. VW keeps pushing previous GEN technologies in "new" SUV's.

Once again I find myself completely agreeing with every point made in this video. I have no idea why people want these cars aside from having accessibility issues with normal hatchbacks. I know we are an aging population but surely everyone isn't in their 80's all of a sudden? Anyway, someone needed to say something and Jay, I'm glad you did 👍.
I've been a life long petrolhead. I find joy in just about every type and age of car. From the simplicity of people cars to super cars. I even appreciate the much maligned Fiat Multipla. However the crossover I have absolutely zero desire to own or even drive.
Well they are doing something right to appeal to so many people across the entire globe, across all price segments, classes of people, cultures and even to the point where ultra luxury and super car brands are adopting them. I guess we are going back to the orginal car body styles from the early 20th century. Lifted up two door box deisgn. Maybe crumbling infrastructure plays a role for some folks?
My wife has accessibility issues, so we've had a series of crossovers. I love fast saloons but haven't had one in over 20 years. It's depressing.

Regarding the higher driving position, it didn't make much sense to me until last year when I moved from my old Honda Accord to a Toyota Rav-4. I was quite surprised at how much easier it is to see nearside kerbs, drains and parked cars with the relatively small increase in height.
I agree with you regarding Arnold Clark and a lot of what you mention. 3 weeks ago I took my golf to vw Arnold Clark for a service and asked them to sort the exhaust leak with new exhaust clamps, they never had any in stock so they booked me to come back the next week. £60 for the clamps and labour, which is extortionate due to them only having minimum labour being an hour. They also washed my car before they contacted me to ask if I wanted washed which I didn't and noticed they had damaged my sunstrip with the pressure washer and unsurprisingly they did an awful job washing it. The next day, the exhaust was leaking again so had to book it in for the Friday for checking. They couldn't fit me in or sort it that day so they've now booked me to come back in for the 28th of this month to try and fix the leaking exhaust, again. 🤦♂️
P.s. my first car, a Peugeot 207, had the same seat sensor issue with the rear seats and would really piss me off when the seat belt warning bong would come on.

Den touraeg könnte man noch als offroader kategorisieren mit dem chassis. Aber alles andere...kauf einfach nen golf, golf variant oder nen touran(gibts nicht mehr lange)

I get blinded by oncoming traffic at night in my little Z3 and my e46. My parents swapped to a crossover from a 3er to be a bit higher and avoid being blinded, I really think that's a big part of it for older drivers.
Compact vans like Golf Sports Van, Mercedes B class, BMW Active Tourer, etc are the same height or even taller, that "excuse" for SUV is BS, nonsense
Yes being blinded from the rear is the worst thing. Here in Oz we have people putting lift kits on 4×4 Ute's they just blind you sitting in traffic or stop lights LED'S blazing it's the outside mirrors that are the worst. When you follow one they have this beautiful flat cut of that shines straight into the cab of the car in front grrrrr. Anyway thanks James for a good laugh 😃

Couple of points, my mum with a couple of herniated disks and needing a hip replacement could get in and out of her Jazz well enough not to consider getting a crossover. The TSI is known in the indy trade for blowing headgaskets, I was quite surprised to hear this but with a couple of mates who own garages they both told me this.
Love to hear that the VW seatbelt alarm sound has *barely* changed 18 years later. Amazing considering I live across the pond.

While watching this video I got an advert for the new T-Roc, and one of the features that VW decided to proclaim was the new haptic "multi-function steering wheel"
So it now goes LEFT and RIGHT? saving drivers from having to turn left three times to go right? that's a huge timesaving!
VW need to learn on this. I will NEVER buy a car with touch controls on the steering wheel, and judging from every review I've ever read or watched I'm not alone.

I had a Mk7 Golf R Estate which i was looking to replace with a Mk8. Availability of this was dire and i was pointed to the TROC R. My response was if I wanted a van iI would buy a Transporter.
I agree with this, as pointed out in the comments below it is a shame this type of car has killed the MPV. When I worked at Renault we sold so many Scenics because of the high seating position. The ability to get in without clambering into the car and get things out of the boot without lifting/bending too much was a godsend for people with mobility issues. We had a scenic because of the high seating position, when it came to buying our next car none of the crossovers had such a high seating position so we ended up with a proper 4x4, plus I could not bring myself to purchase one of these dreaded crossovers!
The whole gag with the seatbelt chime had me in stitches. Lovely.
There was an official taller Golf. It was called the Golf Plus, then called the Golf SV. Looks like it finished production in 2020. My dad had one (due to a hip operation). They were great cars.

If you live in a city with smallish parking spaces and you have mobility issues or have to put up with child seats, you need a car that is similar in foot print to a regular hatchback but just a tad taller.
Makes getting in and out a little easier.
The car for the elderly, those needing a higher seat (that's easy to get in and out of you know) was previously available from VW, the Golf Plus, then Golf SV. They actually benefited those who needed easier access as they have a taller door opening than a regular hatchback with more upright seating possible due to the higher roof, unlike the faux-by-fours that just raise the hatchback's body then stick plastic underneath it to eradicate any additional ground clearance you might gain from doing so. The smaller 5 seat MPV actually offered something over the hatchback while sitting in the same footprint. As the floor height stayed the same as the regular hatchback, you actually got a deeper (vertically) boot alongside the aforementioned more upright seating and easier access, unlike the faux-by-fours that have a larger footprint but give you nothing for it, besides an increased risk of being on your roof after a crash. The MPVs, because they keep all the heavy stuff at the same low floor height as the base hatchback, don't even do that, at least to the same degree, despite giving you things that would warrant it for those needing such features.

When i was buying my mazda 3 sedan 2021, the sales man tried 3-4 time to lead me down the path of a cx 30 that basically is a mazda 3 bit taller, heavier, more expensive in the same trim. Had to basically tell him that if i was gifted a cross over , i would just sell it immediately and buy a normal car. So i do not get the idea of them at all, not a terrain vehicle, higher fuel consumption and more expensive. Only possible plus side is that it might be bit safer in some situations vs a golf or in my case a mazda 3.
Why would it be safer? Some test results? Because certainly the bodystyle is less safe than a lower hatchback sibling.

@@3231687 I hadn't heard that about the floor but it makes sense. So infuriatingly, these higher vehicles are putting car drivers at extra risk by hitting them higher. They're the disease and the cure.

I'm in my early sixties. Still working so I'm very fit and agile. My old person mentality shows when I reminisce about 'proper' cars, like sedans/saloons and station wagons/estates. My current car is a rather nice 12 year old Hyundai Elantra sedan. With a boot. Nothing special dynamically, but I don't really care - it's sleek, low-slung, and cheaper than a frumpy contemporary Corolla or a Pulsar/Sylphy with the dubious CVT. I'm not looking forward to the time I eventually have to replace it. Luckily it's only got 142,000km on it and I really only use it at the weekend. I can see a bus in my future. There is no way I would ever spent my hard earned spondies on things like the TRoc, or it's ilk. Sorry, but you're right - it's end game for me.
Remember we did have a Golf Plus or SV depending on country. However the smallest VW crossover/suv that I would have is a Tiguan Allspace as others don’t offer anything extra to the normal cars. It’s getting tricky finding the right car now due to the rise in automatics and a push for smaller engines. Soon to leave me is a 2019 Focus Active Estate with the 2l ecoblue it’s been reliable I’ve put 80k on and the raised suspension soaks up the speed bumps or potholes without effecting it much on the twistys. If it were possible I would order another but it’s engine faced a demise. So now about to get a Citroen C5 Aircross last of the manual diesels, the reasoning for such a car, big boot (for work) helps that it has sliding seats and the height should help with the now child seat.

I agree on what you say. SUV's are marketed as being a safe vehicle in a crash because of their tough stance hence why you see many on a school run. I remember there was that one episode of Clarkson's Car Years where he was talking about family cars and there was a part when he was trying to figure out why people were buying the large SUV 4x4's and he came to the conclusion that yes ideal if you do live in the countryside where you may encounter occasional floods or bad roads, but for those living in towns and cities they are pointless. The only other use these SUV's have are for towing but you do need something mid to large size with a diesel engine really, not a 1.2 TSI petrol engine

Before SUVs and crossovers really started becoming popular in the UK, cars like family saloons/estates (e.g. Ford Mondeo, VW Passat, Honda Accord, Mazda 6, etc.) and MPVs/people carriers (e.g. Vauxhall Zafira, Xsara Picasso, Renault Scenic, Fiat Multipla, etc.) were the main family car used for things like dropping the kids off at school, going to the shops, family trips out to places like the beach, trampoline park, zoo, water park, the grandparents, or to wherever, etc. But not anymore.
Because everyone is now buying SUVs and crossovers, those days are long gone - now it's just Nissan Qashqai this and Vauxhall Grandland that (or replace with any other SUV or crossover), with the occasional premium luxury ones like the BMW X5, Land Rover Discovery and Mercedes GLE thrown in, and various manufacturers have dropped out of the family saloon/estate and people carrier market altogether to focus on more profitable SUVs.
And Alfa Romeo cancelled plans for a Sportwagon estate version of the Giulia in early 2017 in favour of the Stelvio -which would go on to sell like hot-cakes, and in late 2019, they cancelled production plans for the new GTV and 8C sports cars in favour of, you guessed it, more SUVs!
This review is a bit more unhinged than the usual, love it!
We've just bought a Puma, as we've had a new baby and you try getting prams/car seats/other paraphernalia in the back of a hatchback or supermini. That's another reason people get them. We wanted something with a bit more space (which, unfortunately equals bigger usually) but wasn't like commanding a land yacht. I do take your point about it being strange that people want to be high up nowadays. It used to be that everyone wanted to be low down, like in a sports car.
With the electric car thing, people go for big partly because of the lack of choice in the smaller sector (manufacturers just aren't making many small electric cars) and the relatively high cost. Until recently, I have driven Corsas and Vauxhall are one of the few manufacturers to really push an electric version of a popular small car (see the demise of the Fiesta) but, really, it's far too expensive for what it is and you might as well save your money and buy a petrol version, if you want that car. I think some of it is that if people are spending £25k then they might as well get more space or a bigger car for their money. We've got an EV point as well but it just isn't cost-effective at the moment. Before the new addition I would have got an EV but, as I say, too expensive.
the puma has the same interior space as a fiesta. its a fiesta based crossover.
Totally agree about people who are elderly or who have mobility problems (bad knees, hips, etc.) needing a higher seat to get into … I’m assuming that the auto industry has gotten that message loud and clear …

I almost stopped talking to my Stepdad when he proudly announced last month that he was replacing his Mazda 6 Estate diesel with a petrol T-Roc. His reasoning was that he needed the extra ground clearance for living in Devon, and he liked VW because he owned a Passat 15 years ago. Should have bought a Golf then, or a Passat!

I lived with a 2019 troc rline with the 2.0l awd variant for over 3 years. Every point you made was completely correct, also the one about kids throwing up in the back...yeah first hand experience.
It's a nice car that focuses on things that don't matter. Why in even the top of the line models does it lack basics such as reversing cameras, automatic boot, electric seats and some decent surfaces to rest on!
The boot seems less practical then my older 2008 focus, the seats are harder then a school bench and the mpg is just awful unless you're sitting pretty at 60 with the wind behind you.

I had an enforced period with 2 RSQ3s and it's only now, after 5 years, that I've gone back to a normal car (this time an S4) that I've realised how compromised these upright and blunt-faced machines are. Ride comfort, handling and fuel consumption are all dreadful in comparison. Whilst not the best handling thing, the S4 dispatches corners like they are mild deviations from the straights all while not endeavouring to bounce you over the hedge into the muddy fields beyond.
I completely understand the need for something a bit taller for those that are infirm (that was me for a while). But what are the rest of you doing? Go see a doctor or a psychiatrist immediately.

@@nissanoo0393 I can trace my hot hatch lineage from XR2 to Escort RS Turbo, Peugeot 106 and 309 1.9 GTIs to Focus ST170 so I know what you mean. 106 GTI was the best handling with the ST170 a close second. I love a bit of lift-off oversteer! It's a shame even hot hatches are so lardy these days.

Golf SV owner here, it's the better engineered car, longer wheelbase than golf hatchback and unlike the Troc has independent rear suspension on all but the low powered specs (1.0 petrol & 1.6 diesel) I had a mk7 gti performance and my partner needed a higher up seating position. It's not a fun car but the boot /rear legroom is much better and it doesn't have the nasty plastic of the troc inside. It's the car almost nobody buys (well you can't now it's discontinued) because it's not fashionable however it's a car that a lot of people need. I've also had a 2wd yeti and the SV is considerably better. A 4wd yeti is still a great option with it's off road ability.
You are right about that, they are everywhere. But judging like the guy in the joke seeing a Ferrari / Porsche and saying:

They must be quite good cars afterall.

Great review! I have the same opinion of my mum’s Renault Captur. There is nothing wrong with it, but that’s where the positive comments end. There is no aspect of these mini SUVs that make you think that the people designing, building or selling them actually enjoy their jobs.
The route you too the Troc on was stunning. Where was this filmed?
I have driven both. The Captur is worse in every possible category, from looks, to cabin noise, through engine, handling, responsiveness, ride quality, boot space - you name it, the T-Roc is just way better. Once you drive one you will understand why it's so popular - it's like a golf, only better (and way cheaper).

My wife had the 2 litre R trim. We have just sold it after 4.5 trouble free years, just 23k miles. It was an excellent car. 4 motion good in snow as required and it only list £1800 a year in depreciation. Dropping it into sport it was very lively. In the life of the car we got 40 mpg. The 2 ltr R line (trim) comfortable, quick in its class. Sad to part with it. Just needed an estate. Golf clubs etc. Bought a 2ltr MSport 3 series touring demonstrator.
"Only" 1800 depreciation a year? 😂 I only lost 1000 in 3 years.

Crossovers and most 4x4’s are utterly pointless for the road (except for some small sections of road round here that the council have let the surface deteriorate so badly you could lose a Mini in some of the potholes 🙄).
And don’t get me started about the stupid touch-screen controls in the mk8 era of everything VAG at the moment… 🤦♂️

I think you're right about the nomenclature. I see this much more as a golf Alltrack (non estate) than a competitor to any cx-30 or Subaru Crosstrek.

Always ironic how people slate Arnold Clark when the amount of lying customers do is absolutely astounding. I've supported Arnold Clark and will not go to any other company. Always bought from them and will always buy from them. One particular branch is amazing. Wakefield branch have always had my business, every second hand car I've bought from them had a niggle here and there but they have always gone above and beyond to sort out my cars.

Personally I think VW has lost the plot since the Mk7 Golf. Had a T-Roc as a courtesy car when my Golf GTE was in for a service and it felt like a big step backwards. As you say these do sell well (for some unknown reason!) and VW need to make money after Dieselgate. Cost cutting is in evidence everywhere....
I completely agree on your comments about VW after the MK7 Golf. I think Audi is the same after around the same era. I’ve currently got a 2019 A3 and I can not bring myself to trade it in for a new A3 or Golf, I’m unsure what to buy next… because of this.
Here in the states, the new Mk7 Jetta is worse in every regard than the old Mk6 jetta like my dad owns. And compared to my Mk6 Golf, it's like they're not even made by the same company. Everybody says the Taos is just a complete pile of shit even though it's just a mildly restyled version of the short wheelbase Tiguan. And even after ten years, somehow VW has never gotten rid of the driveline shudder with their automatic transmissions, even when they've switched from the toyota 6 speed lump to their new toyota 8 speed lump. I guess it's still better than letting everyone have the dry clutch 7 speed DSG though.

I’ve got the same model , but a six speed manual. It averages about 36 around town and 50 on the motorway, which I find quite acceptable. By the way the boot floor was in the high position, lowering it gives it quite a generous amount of boot space.

My 3.4L NA Porsche gets 47-48mpg on the motorway, not sure I could accept a car with less than half the power getting 3mpg more...only 20 litres less boot space too. Also pretty much the same price to buy as a new T-Roc, as it happens. It's nice to know I could have had a T-Roc, but it's nicer to know that I didn't 😁
It's milquetoast on 4 wheels. Herz tried to "upgrade" me into one when I needed a rental car for three weeks. I fought them hard and got downgraded to a Mini Cooper JCW.

These cars have better ground clearance. Better at poor roads, speed bumps and parkings with steep approach angles. Yes, maybe not very useful in Europe. But definitely needed in developing nations.
They are roomier than equivalent hatches.
They provide better boot than sedans.
The world moves to these type of car for a reason.
The target for these cars are not people want to have fun driving a car.
In my place - where the road is a lot less perfect - higher car usually means higher ground clearance. Not necessarily means tougher though. Only some confidence that the lower part of the hard earned thing doesn’t get hit by anything hard below

After recently driving a Peugeot crossover (3008) as a hire car on holiday in Portugal, the I quickly realised that if you had the seat raised where you could actually benefit from the raised ride height then the visibility through the windscreen was horrendous. The rear view mirror obstructed a seemingly a vast amount of space.
Great video! I just bought a golf . It’s just right. I’m 58 and I see no need for anything like a Troc. I can get my 86 year old mother in it just fine, I can fit my 6 foot tall kids in the back, I can fit shopping and luggage in the boot, it’s economical (diesel) , automatic cheap to insure, good to drive and quiet on the motorway. Why would I buy anything else?
can someone anyone tell me explain in plain English how this 2023 Troc is in anyway better than my Volvo V70 2.4 manual ? the Volvo is bigger..can carry most white goods. can carry 5 adults in leather ... the sound system is fabulous the panel fit and finish is still great after 300,000ks .you cannot hear the engine..it can achieve 1000ks to a tank of premium fuel.. it handles very well on 17- 7.5" wheels ..the ride is great and it will go for another 300,000ks ..So where is the progress in 20+ years ?????
