We put up a new nest box for our Western Screech Owls $ new owl hatched in the spring!) and have it closed off to keep the starlings and sparrows out. When would be the best time to open it up for the owls? (Kaysville, Utah)
There are many species that use bluebird boxes (1 & 1/2" diameter holes). Chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, Tree Swallows, Downy Woodpeckers and others. Western and Moutain Bluebirds require a slightly larger entrance hole (1 & 9/16). By placing one of these boxes you should attract a resident.

That is awesome. I would think they will be looking for a nest site in early spring. Possibley late February.
@@MarksBackyardBirds Thanks!
I've only heard you mention nest lifts for Bluebird boxes. Are they the only bird that needs them? We don't have bluebirds in my area.

@@MarksBackyardBirds Thank you. I was wondering if any of those other species need a nest lift.
@ it is a good idea for most cavity nesting birds.
