    Love your vids. I have been catching moles in my garden for the last few years. can I ask is there a specific reason for putting the captured mole back in the run? does that prevent other moles using the runs?

    • @freedomofabird
      @freedomofabird  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks! I was doing it just to get rid of the mole. I only do this if I am pretty confident that there is no other mole using that network of runs. If there is, then I would simply reset the trap.

    Very interesting video. This species seems easier to catch than the one I'm familiar with - the Embi mole-rat. The Embi feeds strictly on roots therefore it burrows deeper in hard soil. It's also more cautious and cunning but still catchable.

    How often do you check the traps, and how do you know they've gone off? Just put my first one in tonight.

    • @freedomofabird
      @freedomofabird  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Every 24 hours. The springs will be sticking up if they have gone off. Gently feel for the springs if the trap is deep set. Good luck

    Very funny bit when the pup grabs the mole, out of curiosity why do you put them back in the hole?

    • @freedomofabird
      @freedomofabird  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some people want them burying out of sight. If I am confident that I don't need to reset the trap then it is just easier. If I feel there is a need to reset the trap then I dig another hole for the mole.

    Another way to control them, if this land is not being used to grow food, is to put down grub control. Moles go after grubs. Get rid of the grubs and the moles will go elsewhere. Worked great for me. I only had to treat my front yard once.

    Just started getting moles - little b*astards!So, is the scissor trap the most effective, given chemical/gas is not legally allowed?We want to try and do this ourselves before the last resort of calling someone in, so if you can give me your sound advice, it's off to eBay!

    • @freedomofabird
      @freedomofabird  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Barney29508 I personally like the tunnel traps the best, but that is simply because you have the ability to catch 2 moles at a time, which doesn't necessarily mean you catch more moles, but it does mean less time spent in one spot.
      The traditional scissor trap is ok, but in my view has been superseded by superior traps, and if you want to go down the scissor trap route, then go for the "Talpax". They have much stronger springs and a wider gape. I think you can see these in use in my video "mole trapping with the boys"
      Chemicals can be used still, in the form of Aluminium Phosphide, but it is used under licence. Horrible stuff.
      Hope this helps and happy trapping.

    • @Barney29508
      @Barney29508 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +freedomofabird Yes the guy who came said that it was obnoxious stuff - can't use it within 1ft or so of your house or some such.I've bought 5 barrel traps off eBay for £13.90. I can't believe how cheap these things seem to be!I hope I'm a bit more successful than with the rabbit snares I bought one time - didn't catch a single one and they devoured all me lettuces! Shot the sod with my air rifle in the end which requires a lot of patience! Not much chance of that with moles though unless your name is Jasper Carrott!

    • @freedomofabird

      Yea we still shoot them with the 20 bore. There is no need to wait hours though unless you don't know what you are doing. Once you have worked out the moles feeding cycle you can shoot 4 or 5 in an hour, which doesn't sound much but it can be easier than trying to trap a trap averse mole

    Can't you just shoot the moles? Or do they never surface from the ground?

    • @freedomofabird
      @freedomofabird  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, my lad shoots quite a few with his 20bore. He waits for the new molehills to move as the mole is making them, and then blasts the bottom of it. The pellets don't kill the moles, but the pressure shockwave does. Not practical for large numbers though.

    • @nikolasandric5480
      @nikolasandric5480 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably, it seems like good fun only problem is I can't go mole hunting in Australia. How powerful is the 20bore? Stronger then a .22?

    • @freedomofabird
      @freedomofabird  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Raw Rabbit It's a shotgun firing about 30grams lead. From a metre away, massive energy dump, way more than .22

    • @nikolasandric5480
      @nikolasandric5480 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Must destroy those moles.

    • @freedomofabird
      @freedomofabird  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Raw Rabbit it just stuns them to death, the pellets don't reach them.

    Couldnt you capture them alive, take them far off somewhere and then release them into the wild.

    • @freedomofabird
      @freedomofabird  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +thedarknesscallingme They are already in the wild! All land is owned by someone and it would be illegal to release pest species onto someone else's land. Combine that with having to catch a few thousand of them every year and you will see the problem.
      If you want to do it though..... fill your boots and crack on.
