Lil Watan, the second release off of Mashrou' Leila's third album Raasϋk is a song that discusses the way we are taught to acquiesce to the status quo, and the apathy we are rewarded for in Lebanese politics. "Every time you demand change, they make you despair until you sell out all your freedom. They tell you to stop preaching and come dance with them."

The meaning behind this music video is much much more deep than just a dancer and lyrics. The dancer represents the government, we where all so fascinated and couldn't take our eyes off the screen, barely registering the lyrics or the meaning behind the song, regardless if that dancer was a transgender or not. At the end the crowd (the people) rise in a standing ovation even tho the dancer here represents all the bullshit we are fed not realising all that really matters has been taken out of focus. We are merely sheep in the great herd. And since very few got the message, then mashrou' leila delivered their message brilliantly.

The language of the song i don't speak but i feel the meaning.
I LOVE that video.
It's kind of ironic that a beautiful, lively dancer represents the "governement", that inert thing associated with inefficiency and paralysis. I don't think she's a great choice, except maybe in an ironic, cynic or absurd way. But there definitely is a culture in Lebanon to ignore about real issues and get lost in fake superficiality. I think this has roots in the culture and the people, and is not such a top-down thing. After all Lebanon is a democracy, kind of.
I don't think it was meant to represent or symbolize the government, it's rather a symbol of an instrument used by government to make people forget about their real issues.
The man, that is instigating the audience to revolt, is not heard enough because people are distracted.

I literally burst into tears, as a Chinese person I think I can relate to the phenomenon that Mashrou Leila is trying to point out. You guys are so brave and bright, I genuinely believe people like you guys are the hope of the human future😭
There was a blog account in China called "African and Asian Literature bot" and they posted a lot of Mashrou Leila's music videos with lyrics translated into Mandarin and I watched a whole bunch of them. Love Arabic culture, love Lebanon, love Mashrou Leila

The whole point I'm trying to make here is, Mashrou Leila has definitely done an awesome job of spreading out Arabic culture and breaking stereotypes. Once again, as a Chinese person, I really hope there will be a band like this at some points in the future……(But there probably won't be one since the Chinese government has been more and more strict and manipulative when dealing with citizens' "Freedom of speech"... The fact that you just got banned from performing in a historical venue in Amman due to the band's "identity" only tells you that you've reached the top and you've become very influential and impactful to society. He's talking about how the governments (in the middle-east mostly), distracts you from the truth (The dancer is the symbol of distraction), and whenever a citizen points out anything bad in the government they call him a traitor.

I still remember your concert that I saw at the Cologne Philharmonics a coupe of years back. I didn't even know you before, but you really took my heart this day. I've never seen so many people so different all enjoying the same art in such an intense way. Everybody, really every left the concert with a huge smile on their faces - the 60 year old Germany conservative couples, the Arab lesbians, the girls wearing hijab, the local gays, and above all me. One of the most perfect performances I have seen in my life. And I've seen many. Please return soon. And please bring a long a new album. xx

I guess the main reason is the fact that they are tackling sensitive issues (Love, Sexuality, Politics, Religion) in the context of the Arab World (Lebanon). Also, we should not forget that Hamed Simo has openly declared himself as gay (You can imagine the hate !).
youssef benzouine arabs are just so insecure about their sexuality that they diss anyone who's comfortable with their own, he is a musician, his music is our business, his private life is his business and no one should dare to cross the line and bash him for who he is.
