A lot of places have a "no drone" policy. Doesn't make it legal or enforceable, but they will still ask you to leave every time. So when the lowest paid rep from the company comes out to deliver the message, it doesn't mean she is clueless or needs to educate herself. She was doing what she was paid to do, deliver a message. Then ya'll shot the messenger. I hope you all go back and get the Solo 3DR down, looks pretty cool.

Ken was actually wrong. Metro Parks is not able to permit the use of drones in parks outside of designated flying areas for any purpose, including photography or filming. Metro Ordinances require that no person shall voluntarily bring, land or cause to descent or alight within or upon any park, any airplane, flying machine, balloon, parachute, or other apparatus for aviation (which includes drones). Drone flight is not allowed in Nashville Metro Parks except in three designated areas: Warner Park, Peeler Park, and Cane Ridge. A permit is necessary to fly drones in these designated areas.

Sorry, but "Paula Blart" was more correct than you think. While the city can't regulate flying over something like a park (the FAA owns that) they can, and do regulate and can enforce where you takeoff and land. Nashville Metro Code: 13.24.400 - Aviation.
"No person shall voluntarily bring, land or cause to descend or alight within or upon any park, any airplane, flying machine, balloon, parachute, or other apparatus for aviation. "Voluntarily," in this connection shall mean anything other than a forced landing. Any landing other than one caused by mechanical or structural failure of the aircraft or any of its parts shall be deemed to have been made voluntarily, and this shall include landings caused by error or oversight, negligence or failure to comply with FAA regulations or rulings. This section is to be construed in pari materia with Section 13.24.240 of this code. This section shall not apply to parachuting activities in conjunction with the Tennessee Women's Suffrage Centennial Celebration in Centennial Park."

In addition to FAR, Illinois has had a specific statute since 2018 - no jurisdiction below State level can make any rules/regulations about unmanned air traffic (because they can't anyway). Just the same, YEARS later, lots of local park districts (etc.) still "prohibit" unmanned aircraft from flying above their facilities. 🙄

Guys , I'm with you . I'd like to be able to fly my drone alot more places than I'm "allowed" to . And it looks like you guys are still trying to stay within the law . But I think you guys are kidding yourselves if you think you're being at all responsible by colliding that drone into the building and then flying the damaged drone over cars and people . I know that gargoyle is made of concrete or something similar but depending on the condition of that concrete you could still do damage or knock off a loose piece. I'm in construction. An incident occurred on September 3, 2023 and the PA State police now have my Air 2S. I was filming a hyper lapse video of the sunset when I received a critical battery error (my own stupidity) and the drone made an emergency landing about 400 meters from home. I could see that it had landed on a neighbors property and waited until the next morning to go there and ask permission to search. When I did they told me that they had found it and called the police who came and took the drone. I was happy to hear that it was found and figured that all I needed to do was call, explain what happened, and go retrieve it from them. I made that call on September 4 and was told that the officer involved would have to call me back. I waited a few days without hearing a word then he finally contacted me. He informed me that I wouldn't be getting the drone back soon if at all because there had been other complaints, about drone flyers in my neighborhood. I explained that I could easily prove that there was no malicious intent on my part by showing him the flight logs. I also told him that everything I filmed would be on the memory card in the drone and, if he removed the battery, he would find a sticker with my name, address and phone number on it. He didn't want to hear that though and was very arrogant and downright rude when he told me that he was gathering everyone in the area who had complained and they were taking me to court. When I inquired about a timeline he said that he couldn't even start the 'investigation' until he gets off of 3rd shift. Its been a month and he still has not started the investigation. Since then I've done some research and found that civil forfeiture laws exist that allow them to keep property indefinitely even if there are never any charges or arrests made.

I have a drop mechanism for my mini 2. It can lift half a pound, I tested it, and if it gets stuck I can trigger the drop mechanism, that might have been better for you. They also make them for larger dji drones. They're pretty cool, and super cheap, they're just a servo with a receiver and a slide arm.

Really wow i never seen that before. where you get it from and whats it called? ive seen homemade stuff with servos on rc places so im assuming your using a seperate tx & rx? Do you have the folding landing gear on yours or no? My drone is super low to the ground and it cant really even land in grass without it chopping up the grass lol..
But thats cool, i wonder if they have that for the dji mini 3 pro.. That thing can stay up in some serious wind that would give my bigger drones a hard time, its incredible. I wonder how much weight it could pull, probably not much but the motors and esc seem strong.
Ive heard great things about the mini 2 and i want to pick one up to have with the mini 3 or maybe ill go for a bigger dji drone like the air2/2s. But the Avata is really tempting to me plus then i could use the goggles and controller for a FPV drone..that i dont have yet lol..
FPV is also cool on a rc plane i like flying it from like the cockpit area where i have the camera mounted and it almost feels like a crappy graphics simulator with the analog fpv lol but it works and its pretty damn cheap.

A few years back I was taking video of a historic sight for a local park department and my Mavic 2 got stuck in a tree. I devised a very similar grappling hook solution with a stick and a roll of poop bags I found on premesis then sent my Air 2 up to retrieve the Mavic 2 pro. I hooked it perfectly, pulled the drone slightly upward and then... my air 2's engines errored out and did an emergency shut off sending the air 2 toppling to the ground and leaving the M2P stuck in the tree. The next day my work hired a tree trimmer to go retrieve the M2P, apparently they didn't quite understand the assignment because we basically paid them $400 to gently retrieve the drone with their ladders and they literally showed up on site and threw a rock at it knocking the drone from the tree.

The drone on the roof is a 3D Robotics Solo with Master Airscrew props, a Gopro Hero 4, and a very hard to find 3DR gimbal. Worth retrieving. These drones have a huge following still and the replacement parts pool is shrinking rapidly. These were $2k drones, pre DJI Phantom era, heavily touted as the first "smart drone". They were way ahead of their time. Used 3DR Solos can be found for $300 without the gimbal all day long, but fetch a premium with the gimbal and Hero 4 Black, the only camera that works with it plug and play for full function. New Solos can only be acquired through the 3DR $20K enterprise package, last I heard. Mine weighs in at almost 4 lbs all up with gear and flies great. Fast, nimble, and built rock solid. Still my favorite drone to fly on jobs with my Typhoon H a close 2nd.

The law in UT about flying over property has an extremely vague and badly defined clause in it that businesses try to use all the time to say "you can't fly over us." One in particular is extremely aggressive about it as well, and it's a very popular one to get footage of. It's such a vague provision that it's literally unenforceable but they all scream about it and call the cops who don't have a clue what to do with it really.

Man so close!! I was feeling frustrated with you when the security rolled up its a shame that most of them do not know or understand airspace rules. They think park means no flyzone but that's for National Parks not public parks. Hope they get some education on that. Awesome adventure and I'm glad you did not loose the phantom! 🤟👏👍

Have you ever thought of telling the security: "I understand you, but I have obtained permission from the FAA, the Federal Aviation Administration, under their authority pursuant to 49 U.S.C. § 44807, § 44809, and 14 C.F.R. § 107.13. I've printed this on business card sized sheets of paper to hand to anyone that confronts me. I then ask them to contact the FAA. Works like a charm.

I have nowhere near the experience of Ken flying my drone. I do hold my Part 107. I have found in my few interactions with those that know nothing that they prefer to stay that away. As calmly as I can I try to educate them that, despite their passion, they don't own the airspace over their house, a park, etc., but they don't care. They heard on the Internet that people are spying on houses to rob them or find kids to stare at, and that's it. They don't want to know more. They are convinced they have caught a criminal and they enjoy their ignorance. So disappointing.

You could put the hook on a release and on a longer string. Hook it with the drone , release the hook, pull the string from the ground . Could have a trash bag a few feet up the string from the hook to act as a parachute.

Seriously need some education for local security and cops that the FAA preempts whatever they want to enact. They don't own the air and can't ban overflight.
Had some karen yell at me me saying I couldn't fly at their park, or within 100 feet of their structure in class G airspace, which is of course comically wrong, and of course I did it anyway while standing one foot outside the property line

By default, drone flight is allowed in public parks and state parks. However, each park district has the authority to create orders that prohibit or regulate drone flight in their respective parks. This can take the form of absolute restriction, designated hours for drone flight, or a requirement for drone pilots to secure a permit prior to flying their drones.
