Did the 707s take off without full tanks ? I presume the runaway was to short to allow a full tank of fuel , and they had to land somewhere else to refuel for the long journey back ?

Most departures were with light fuel loads, with just a short hop to Gatwick, Stansted or Manston. The heaviest 707 take-off that I witnessed was ST-AKW , flying direct to Khartoum, seen at the beginning of 707 part 3. th-cam.com/video/xtaqCOnhpXQ/w-d-xo.html

Great stuff, as pleased as i am to see the progress being made at SEN i feel we've well and truly seen the last "golden age" at the airport, everything's so homogonised these days.
Is it just me or do others find it hard to believe that the Koda Air 707 was the only one of these old beasts up to no good?

When I was videoing Electras, Viscounts, 707s etc in the 1990s, I regretted that I had missed filming the "golden age" of the Carvairs in the 1960s.! At least Southend now has aircraft that are not one stop away from museum pieces, however dull they might seem to us!

Yeah fair point and it's good that the operators at SEN use modern, safe equipment, it's just they lack character, i guess it was of it's time and were ATC Lasham still in existence it'd just be more Airbuses and small Boeings cos that's what makes up the worlds airline fleets these days
