Steam returned to the London, Tilbury and Southend line on the 2nd and 3rd of May 1999 with two round trips on each day between London Fenchurch Street and Shoeburyness. With busy commuter traffic and length of less than forty miles, tank engines were used to work the line until electrification in 1962. 4:55 nice sounds
My mum used to leave me in Southend central while she went shopping. No one seemed to mind and I was happy as Larry
Even hush kitted without a doubt the noisiest aircraft EVER PRODUCED!
Used to play in there when it was abandoned 😮
It's so sad to see these Viscounts in the process of being scrapped. I was BAF Engineer in Aberdeen for three years where we operated four rotations per day up to Shetland. It's heartwarming to know that Hotel Mike is preserved at Brooklands. I've lived in Australia now for thirty years, but if I ever visit the UK again, Brooklands will be one of my first ports of call. Thanks for posting all these wonderful videos.
Flew in the 330 in Philippines going back early 90s...
The sound on take-off @ 3:25. Ahhhhhhhh, music to my ears.
That aircraft was wonderful!
There’s only two 727s based at the airport now and they are the oil spill response planes. These are now both 40 years old, previously flew for fed ex and were the last off the production line
So much better than the wimpish second fiddle DC9..
Smokin like a trooper.
Stunning plane and amazing sound. I remember the Sudanese TAAT coming into Manchester in the 90s trailing black smoke and looking battered! Screaming engine noise as it turned when taxiing. Nice to see & hear the Air Rwanda 9XR-JA. It was always the last plane in the Civil Aircraft Markings but sadly I never got to see it.
Terrific video. I used to train spot along the line betweem Leigh-on-Sea and Shoeburyness in the 1950s. There were still a couple of the old LT&S 4-4-0Ts around in the mid 1950s but most of the motive power was 2-6-4t engines, standard and Fairburn class 4s and all of the Stanier 3 cylinder engines (37 in total). I travelled to work from Southend East to the City of London in 1961 and 1962, when steam was replaced by EMUs. Happy days.
Don’t worry, silly music stops after about a minute
Bac when planes sounded like planes, 707's and Tridents were noisy too also not forgetting the thick black smoke they spewed when taking off.
My late father , was a load master on that aircraft
Does anybody know if the 1-11 had rear facing seats over the wings?
Yes they did, only on the 500 series though.
Each and every one of the EMUs in this video i serviced and repaired. I was a fitter at east ham depot from the early 80s through to 96. I enjoyed every minute working on these beauties. Each one had its own unique charm and character to drive, work on and, i know it sounds strange, smell. I would love to see if any have been preserved and are still working.
From Wikipedia: 'Two driving trailers, 75033 and 75250, which belonged to units 302 201 and 302 227, are preserved at Mangapps Railway Museum near Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex. These units have been repainted into BR overall blue with yellow ends and are still in very good condition, with the destination scrolls still in working order, the seats still in British Rail colours and the Network South East maps still in very good condition. The rest of the fleet has been scrapped since withdrawal in late 1999.'
@robinpinnock2678 Thank you for that great information. I will definitely make my way there to see them the next time I'm in that part of the UK. Would be nice to speak to the people who service the units and take care of them. It's a shame they didn't have the full 4 car units. Obviously, there is no overhead power to run the motor coach, but the motors could have been modified to run freewheel, and I suppose space is limited for two 4 coach units.
Do you have any knowledge of the Brickfields in Cranham about 26 miles to the west which are also Essex Clay.
I was not aware of Cranham Brickfields - I think it closed before WW2 !
@@robinpinnock2678 possibly but I didnt move there until December 1967 at the age of 7 from Emerson Park

LOOKS LIKE A CROSS BETWEEN AN F-27 FAIRCHILD AND A DEHAVILAND CARIBOU...jmo
Andovers have a unique sound with their dart engines just like 757s have with their RRs.
When i was a young lad, about 50 years back now,we used to go on regular holidays to Guernsey and flew on these and Viscouts.I think the Heralds were flown by BIA if remember rightly. The screetch from the engines on either of them is one of my earliest childhood memories
日本のYS-11と同じ RRのダートエンジンサウンド懐かしいですね。
All that noise+smoke 🎶😎👌
The sound of the Viscount. I can even play the sound effect on the piano. Viscount taxiing.
I believe my father is the one flying this very plane RIP capt. Frank Pfeiffer
I'm sorry this is not my father flying this. He was the captain involved in the mid air collision with a twin otter over Dakar Senegal. He was so messed up from the accident he had to see a therapist. ATC in Senegal spoke French and dad was not fluent that's what caused it I don't care what anyone says he was not at fault for that. It was an ATC screw up
Good evening, I am the son of the pilot of the DH6 that collided with the NAMC YS of Gambia Airways. Your father probably told you that he was confused because the control tower spoke French, perhaps to relieve himself of what he had done. He had deliberately decided not to follow the instructions of the control tower which had asked him to climb and stay at 2000 feet because the twin otter was at 3000 feet. Your father said "We're going higher come what may" unfortunately his actions caused the death of 2 pilots including my father, a captain trained in Brittany, France, father of 5 children (I was 9 at the time) including a 1-year-old child who never knew him. A woman devastated by this tragic death of her young husband of 41. We fell into poverty for more than 10 years because of this accident which went unpunished apart from compensation.@@darahill928

Am the brother of the firts guy who responded. I was 11 when dad dies in this tragic accident. It was not the ATC fault. Your father was 700-900 feet above the altitude given to him which was way too much if you asked me. For the rest, my brother tells it all.
The 707 had some serious flaps!
I have flown in this Guppy and more CL-44's when i worked for Transmeridian (Kegan)Air Cargo out of Stansted, she was grounded in the early 70's because her main spa had a strees crack, a crew came from the USA to fix it.
I love the viscount, I remember them when I thought I had a apple.
I worked for Transmeridian in the late 60s early 70s and flew in this monster the (guppy) one time i remember her grounded because of main spa cracks
Back in the 90's this runway was less then a mile long, yet they had 707's and DC-8's fly into there. They even had a L-1011 on that short strip.......
wonderful footage
Mechanic attempting to push the revereser back lol. Fantastic!.
The Sheik of Abu Dhabi had a personal Viscount know as the Golden Budgie. It ended up operating with Manx Airlines. It was reported that a hard landing caused sand to appear from inside the trim.
VAYA CABALLO
BAC 111s like the Viscount before them were excessively noisy around airports among their other short comings (range and capacity). Apparently some of them lived in Africa, but for how long and with what results though now nearly all have disappeared.
Thanks Robin. Another good one. Never get bored with watching your series of potted activities at Southend.
So very noisy
Another one of your superb series featuring Southend. Always interesting, always informative. Many thanks
Remember my first flight was on a Viscount from Dublin to Le Bourget in 1962
It's a nice song of turboprop egines....... )
In 1987 I had a short domestic flight from Legaspi to Cebu on one of the newly introduced SD360s of Philippine Airlines (PAL). Of that flight, I had no choice, PAL then had the monopoly of the domestic passenger airline market. The roughly hour long flight was the worst flight I flew. The cabin was super noisy I felt dizzy for most of the flight. After the flight, the dizziness somehow stretched into a fever which extended into the following day. I vowed not to fly on an SD360 again. Those times were the twilight of PAL’s monopoly of the domestic airline market. A few years after that unforgettable SD360 flight, the Philippine domestic market started to open to other airlines giving more choices of destinations, flight sectors and frequencies, and aircraft types. During this period PAL also quickly phased out the new SD360s and the aging HS748s from their fleet, changing these types with F50s.
J’ai adoré cet appareil.Même volé sur un vol de Air Inter enfant !
As usual Robin, top notch !
Another excellent video. Always highly emotive to view these first generation jets. Great days
Definitely had to where hearing protection when those things rolled in. Bloody loud!!!!
No thanks lol
One of most frightening aviation “horror film“ I’ve ever seen here on TH-cam, regarding the scrapping scenes of the mighty Belfasts. Many thanks for the Short Belfast flight videos! 👍👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Returned from Japan (MisawaAB) Aug 65, to Anchorage to Travis on a Tigers CL 44. A fond memory, fine looking FA’s too
