Who knew a rip-off of a rip-off of Charlton Comics would be so entertaining? Ted didn't knew. But now he know.

I thought Gillen's series (which ultimately ended up being only 5 issues) had some great commentary on both Watchmen as a story and Peter Cannon himself. The first series Dynamite had when they acquired the license was a very straightforward use of Peter as a stand-in for Ozymandias (though perhaps a bit less evil). Gillen's story, conversely, has an alternative, antagonistic Peter Cannon engage in the Ozymandias plot. I prefer what Gillen did, keeping the main Peter as someone who would not engage in these manipulative tactics for the greater good--in line more with who Peter is (or perhaps was, before Watchmen came around and led everyone to place some of his characteristics onto Peter) as a hero.
The line that has stuck with me comes from the final issue when Peter speaks to his villainous equivalent, having beaten him down. "In the end... this? All of this? You did it 35 years ago. Please. Let's try something else". There is obvious metatextual commentary at play, and I believe it is being directed in multiple directions. But generally, he is saying to move on from Watchmen and to stop letting it dictate everything with his character (and perhaps, to stop letting it dictate comics to whatever extent it may). With the end of the story Peter, and the reader, find renewed vigor and move forward.
My belief in this reading is only reinforced by the third Dynamite-published Peter Cannon series, written by Fred Van Lente. While I have been unable to find it in local comic shops, from the interviews with the writer I've come across it is very much back to formula for Peter. No Ozymandias plot, no mass hysteria. Peter is being taken back to his roots as a reluctant hero who would much rather stay in solitude away from society, and with Gillen's story as its immediate predecessor I cannot help but feel others respect Peter as a character as well.
I thought this was a great video, and I am very curious as to what Ted thought of the final issue.

I'd be REALLY curious to know what Alan Moore thinks of this, a work that doesn't just exploits and (to quote Moore) violates Watchmen, but also builds upon its idea and is a love letter to the iconic book ...
... Who am I kidding, he'd still probably hate it ...

'How dare you use actual and ripoff Charlton characters to actually ripoff my ripoffs of the actual Charlton characters!'

One of the better Watchmen commentaries is Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's Pax Americana. Its interesting how Peter Cannon inspired Watchmen characters but unlike them he is free from DC control.
Apparently there are references to other creators as well like Grant Morrison, Mark Millar and Warren Ellis. I think the black and white pages are a shout out Eddie Campbell.
I dont know what it says about society right now but there does seem to be lots of Watchmen mining going on right now.

I had a feeling the black and white segments were a shoutout to an artist in particular. Warren Ellis wrote about the series in his newsletter, which inspired me to pick it up, though I had been considering it for a few weeks whenever I saw it on the shelf at my LCS. Loved the "Pax Americana" issue of MULTIVERSITY as well!

I think it says that comics pretty much ran out of ideas 30 years ago.
