    Most guys will just dive right in, figuring "What's the most that can happen?", whereas many women of a certain age were not raised to have that kind of confidence around engines. Thanks so much, Robot, for giving this woman the confidence to go for it.

      Sadly, we *tell* women they're strong, confident, capable, etc. But we don't seem to *show* them how to be those things. Repeating them as mantras does a disservice to women. The only way is to dive in.

    I've cleaned and rebuilt more PWK and si carbs for vintage Vespas than I care to think about, but never a modern carb until yesterday. This video gave me the key tricks (accelerator pump & the variable slide, in particular) to get my friend's bike back on the road after he let it sit for a couple years. 😀
    Thanks for making it!

    I just bought a 2004 GT 200L with 450 miles on it on Craigslist. The battery is new, and I'm experiencing a weak start, and the bike smells of gas, with no leaks. I'm thinking I'll clean the carb this weekend. I'm so happy this video exists.

    I just replaced all the fuel lines on a 200L. That little line with the clamp was a pain. Now I know it's the fuel tap that is not working correctly. Great Video. Thank You.

    Great video, with the clearest explanations and camera work on this subject anywhere on yt, which gave me the confidence to have a go. It was a slight shame that you skipped over the float / float needle part, as that is where the problem was on my carb. I had some gunge blocking the fuel inlet passage that the float needle sits over. I poked it with an .11 guitar string and sprayed carb cleaner through it and now it works. Thanks Robot!

    Absolutely amazing video I have one problem with my Vespa I have been running it without tightening screw near the carburator of the air filter connector pipe and it’s engine oil which I used getting darker so today after watching your video I figured out the problem and tighten the screw of the carburtor and air filter pipe finger crossed I am hoping I have not made too much damage in the engine

    Fantastic informative video (as are all your videos). My Piaggio XEvo (which has virtually the same carb) was doing the same thing. Starting on tick over but would die after 20 seconds and would instantly die if your tried to rev it. The bike had been off the road for a long time so drained the fuel. My only real problem was the refitting the diaphragm. It wouldn't sit in the recess, each time I got one corner in, the other would pop out, it was slightly oversized, perhaps by age but otherwise OK. Eventually I resolved the problem by fitting the cap and loosely inserting the 4 x screws. I pulled each screw down gently and then with a steel rule I carefully pushed the rubber in all round,. With finger pressure on the cap it slowly settled into place - thought this might help others. I have 2 questions though, 1. Does it need to be water cooled? Could I cap the pipe. 2. What happens if the auto choke has failed. Will it start and run. I can't find an effective way of testing it. Rich

    Great video! I’ve just cleaned my carb and jets as I have been getting bogging in high revs which I think is a lean condition. She idles ok but can’t figure out what else it can be? My vacuum hoses have been changed, my manifold is new, and air filter sponge is pretty much new too. Can anyone tell me what else it could be and why I’m still getting this issue? Going to change my spark plug again as I have been told this could also be the issue. Any help is appreciated.

    I've got a problem.
    Leader 125 2V A/C 2014 Aprilia SR Motard.
    It was sat for about 6 months with bad fuel and the bike lost power, top speed, acceleration, everything. During this time I had to change the engine and the same problem with that one too. I used the same transmission components and have serviced them all numerous times. I've replaced the spark plug, fuel lines, fuel filter and many other things. The idle fuel speed screw is backed out about 3 to 4 whole turns to compensate for an issue somewhere and I'm 99% sure it's not air leaks because the inlet manifolds are fairly new and tight. I'm thinking about cleaning the carb tomorrow.

    Just remove the vacuum petcock under the right side plastic trim panel, with a large funnel under it, and ALL the gas will drain out. One big issue with ALL motor vehicles, including Vespa scooters, is ethanol gas. It can destroy every single rubber and plastic part in the fuel system, rust the steel parts, and corrode the aluminum parts. Before ethanol, carburetors would just get gummed up. Now things are MUCH worse. I removed one float bowl, and found what looked like a rusty SOS pad in there. It was a steel float bowl. The carburetor was ruined.

    Carburetors ARE a lot better, and 10 times simpler than EFI. EFI, and all it's related electronic parts, sensors, fuel pump, ECU, etc are a real nightmare. I have a 2006 GT200, have owned it 7 years, and have NEVER had carburetor problems with it. I only ride it about half the year, here in Phoenix, AZ it is simply too hot to enjoy riding in the summer. When I put it away for the summer (it is stored indoors) I drain out all the ethanol gas (you can do that by removing the vacuum diaphragm from the tank, all the gas will come out) then draining the carb float bowl. Then I put it back together, and put in a gallon of TruFuel, a non ethanol fuel meant for storage and small engines. It has rust and corrosion inhibitors in it. I connect it to a battery tender, and start it up and warm it up once every 2 weeks. This keeps everything like new till riding season again. I also have a couple of vintage Vespas I do the same way. Again, NO carburetor problems. ON an EFI bike, if you leave ethanol gas in the tank very long, it will destroy the VERY expensive in tank fuel pump. You can also destroy this pump simply by running out of gas. The gas serves as both a lubricant for the pump, and also places a load on the pump to prevent it from turning to fast. This is an issue with pretty much all EFI fuel pumps, including cars. EFI is just another way to say EPA. All emissions crap should be removed, including the float bowl vent, gas tank vent, and charcoal canister. The tank and float bowl should be vented to the atmosphere.

    • @tenders
      @tenders 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not many people agree with your comments on EFI. Carburetors work fine indefinitely with a bit of attention to fuel age and quality. But EFI responds automatically to changes in temperature, elevation, and fuel quality, rarely fails, and avoids 95% of the problems that carburetors have. However, the remaining 5% of problems that do arise are difficult or impossible for a DIY mechanic to fix. That is a pretty good trade - just scan through the postings on forums and Reddit and see how constantly people post problems that all trace back to dirty carbs. I agree with you that ethanol in fuel is an abomination and and embarrassment to our political process. But it is manageable with conscientious use of fuel stabilizer and minimization of any fuel over about 8 months old. I have ten carbureted small engines on various scooters, generators, snowblowers, inboards, outboards, and power washers, all used seasonally, and haven't had a problem with ethanol fuel, although I know many people who have who are less attentive to the age of their gasoline.

    Not to bash the tech advantage of fuel injection, but it took you damn near a minute to test a battery with your video game thingi. I would have had that battery not only voltage tested but also load tested in a third of that time. Just saying.. digital ISN'T always better.
