What is happening? I could be doing anything productive, but I choose to sit & watch Otto fix a drive shaft? Why? What compells me to watch this? I'll never own a boat. I'll never need shaft repair knowledge. It seems I got addicted to the problem solving skills of Otto Kilcher. I can't get enough of this wise crackin' wise man. The skill of one can help so many via TH-cam. Keep it coming. Thumbs up! I wanna see what project comes next.
I love watching machining. I ran a gear manufacturing company for 32 years. We solved many customers problems. That is what makes your video so attractive to me. You are showing people how to fix things, solve problems and your enthusiasm is part of the charm of your videos. Thank you for another great video.
As someone who runs a repair shop on the side I can say that I truly enjoyed this video and seeing how you all came up with solutions to a problem. One cannot have the perfect tool for every situation and being able to improvise is a great skill a lot of modern machinists lack.
Not a lot of people today know what the suspenders colors represent. Used to watch the red green show every week. Love it. As long as you dont pick up his habits on fixing things. Lol
Otto’s suspenders are probably for boating. Buoys are red right up a channel and green are on the right going the opposite way. I’d be very surprised if he had seen the Red Green show.
I've never made it up to Alaska but it's always had a special place in my heart. My oldest brother lived up there for many years he owned a nice house outside Soldotna he was the Captain of a long liner fishing vessel on the Bearing sea for many years. We still have the videos he used to send home I remember always being really worried about him some of the videos out there were just wicked waves and weather. He ended up getting a divorce from his wife and they moved out of Alaska. He moved to Wyoming and then remarried and started driving semi for the fracking fields. And on one of his days off he was driving his pickup down the interstate and blew a front tire his truck rolled several times and he lost his life. That was 6 years ago now he was only 57 at the time the same age I will be this August. Sure miss him. Sorry for the long story but every time I see fishing vessels or anything about Alaska I always think of my brother
The breadth of Otto’s knowledge never ceases to amaze me! Is there anything he doesn’t know how to fix/operate?? Right on Otto! Reminds me so much of my dad. Love watching him.
When I was in Alaska that was fun for me I don't sleep well anyway. I was home I love Alaska. Want to get back so bad. Blessings to anyone who has spent time there. Me Wyoming to Alaska is for me.
I too appreciate precision even though I never worked in metal. I am a woodworker and appreciate a well put together project. The tolerance is not as fine as metal but you work as close as you can to achieve results you are proud of. Watching you is entertainment and educational at the same time.
Otto, I started watching you with my children in “Alaska the last frontier.” My children are grown and gone and I happen across your TH-cam video. I’m close to your age and remember living a similar life on the shore of Lake Superior. My grandfather was a commercial fisherman with a wealth of knowledge of boats and ships, and how to repair them. You need to pass your knowledge to younger people as you and I will be gone some day. My grandfather passed suddenly and his experience and knowledge went with him. Love your channel as it reminds me of when I grew up in a small fishing village in northern Michigan.
Love watching him and his families keep on coming through to us. From ILLINOIS. Keep up the great advice and work.🎉🎉. This boat lift is so amazing to watch it move😂😂😂😂.
@OttoKilcher (a.k.a. Red Green - I.Y.K.Y.K,) THANK YOU! Thank you for taking us along on these wonderful adventures. You truly are someone I could call neighbor and be proud to have as a neighbor, and I do not say that lightly nor glibly. It's sad, but most people will never get to experience or understand how those who live in Alaska are a different breed, in a very good way, from the rest of America. Alaskans know that they need to rely on their fellow Alaskans to survive and sustain year round. I miss living in Alaska. I wish I had never left, and I most definitely want to go back. It's the only place that EVER felt like home. It's also sad that Discovery never showed this part on Alaska: The Last Frontier. The true reality of daily life on an Alaskan Homestead. There surely would have been more viewers if this part of Alaskan life had been shown on the show.
That's pretty cool Otto. I wonder how many other people would attempt to take 0.003" of bend out of a 12' shaft with a hammer. Not many. Your experience gives you great confidence Otto.
It it's Otto I'm watching. Always great content , repairs, building , an other great content. It's very interesting an informative. Love the new channel, kelp healthy. Alabama's a big fan.
Thanks Otto, brings back memories from the late eighties when I worked in Ship building/Repair in Tasmania. we did a lot of work on fishing boats. even got to work on an icebreaker that tried to break rocks. didn't go so well for the icebreaker's twin props and rudders
With a lifetime of experience; Otto is the man. A modern day true pioneer. Thanks for your video production, August. Your truly blessed to get to spend so much time with your Dad. Thank You for sharing your day.
33+ years millwrighting in the lower 48 , simply outstanding !! Adapt and overcome !! Shaft straight within a half thousandth any better and I would have done it (lol) alaskan find machining is the perfect example of Git er done !! Great job young man !! God bless you
My Dad used to stand pennys on their edge while balancing wafferizers in the osb industry. Love the precision. Love the channel. Welcome back all Kilcher kin.
Enjoyed watching this. AMAZED that this is just generalized, random-access, day to day knowledge for you of how to fix stuff. Skills are being lost... Maybe you, the fam and others in the area could start a small "Homesteading Basic Skills School" 😯. That'd be cool 😎.
Otto - So glad to have found your channel on YT. I used to binge watch "The Last Frontier" on Discovery and was gutter when it ended. Good to see that we can still get a dose of fun this way :)
I love these fishing boats,I spent a summer on the kenai,in 2008,Homer was a favorite especially seldovia,I have a nice piece of artwork from seldovia too. great video you guys!!
You probably fished with my grandfather. He had a boat he used out there in the bay. Called the "Heidi ann" his name was Bob winningham. He and my father Robert would do it every year. Would be fabulous if I came across someone who knew him. We lost him about 20 years ago due to cancer.
100% on the magnetism. They have it. It's much more fun for them to say.."drill baby drill". Job could be done with hydrogen, but they wont give us that either. Really glad to see you started a channel. I feel lucky to be here at the beginning. :) This channel is going to be huge. God Bless!
Great job you can fix anything. We enjoyed our tour of the homestead today the guide was great she knew so much even took a call from Otto while we were there wish we could have met him.
Check the fit and face of the coupling..? Never mind you’re checking now. Could it be an out of balance prop? Damn you never cease to amaze with your ingenuity. we do a lot of that here in Maine, we call it ” Yankee ingenuity” but facing an engine coupling in the boat… you’re a machine! I once had do drill a 2” stainless rudder stock with the boat in the water I used one of those magnet mounts and a go pro articulating tri-pod to hold my jury rigged oiler. Took two days of drilling and went through half a dozen Wal*Mart pillows and a stack of oil-sorb pads.. -Born in AK live in ME
"OK" work, as usual, Otto! I have to wonder how much deflection you would see in that shaft with all of those variables in play while it was in the boat (although probably impossible physically). .003 in the shaft, and whatever each flange was off, over a 12' length at X RPM. I don't know much about boats, but I have to assume that the RPM of that shaft is 'relatively' low with a 12' span length and no center supports. And another thing to note that I was curious about is how much the deflection would have changed at each end had the rollers been situated at the points where the deflection was the highest. Also, I would have liked to have seen the deflection measured along the shaft with the rollers being right at the ends, as close as possible to how it was when installed in the boat. Great content as always, Otto! Looking forward to more! -Dusty

Yeah I have like 5000 things to do, but this is the best. It's how our lives could be... imagine.
Cutting that flange with the make shift drill bit tool is the coolest thing I’ve seen on youtube. I don’t think they teach that in mechanic schools.
I know !! Guys like Otto are who you want when stuff breaks - like McGyver in the real world :)
Otto is amazing. He's a Jack-Of-All-Trades, and is very generous when it comes to helping others resolve challenges. He is truly a man to look up to.
Like Mart Raney!

Otto is an incredibly brilliant guy. Jack of all trades. Great personality to boot.

Very interesting technique facing off that flange in place. Well done sir .
You are a wise man on those magnets you'd be surprised what he's already given us
Too bad we can not be as friendly as YOU OTTO around the world that seems to thrive on distrust of another human being.
Loved the machining on the engine side of the prop shaft, well done!

Fantastic job on straightening the shaft and flange. The machine shop I worked in straightened quite a few over the years 👍🇺🇸

Nice red green suspenders.
I shipped some Ribbed rubber mat to Homer maybe around 2012 to 2013, it is used a lot for sluices. I sold it on ebay.
Great job otto, entertaining,
Way cool how you cut the flange with center drill
