    A GREAT sounding a guitar, however, the 'Jr.' models USED to be a 'student' guitar & therefore affordable! NOW they're a premium instrument along with the OTHER SGs & LPs!
    Still MORE versatile than many imagine!

    • @StreetPreacherr
      @StreetPreacherr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah a 'student' model, but at CUSTOM SHOP prices!
      Didn't they used to (or still) make a version of this that wasn't 'custom shop', and sold for much less?
      Or was it just the LP Junior/Specials that released both expensive 'TV Yellow Custom' versions along with more 'economical' 'regular' 'Made in USA' range instruments?
      And does this use the same P-90 pickup they put in those cheaper Junior/Specials from 2019/2020? I know this has a 'dog ear' while the others were pick guard mounted with covers, but was it considered the same 'model' of P-90?

    • @DMSProduktions

      @@StreetPreacherr I have NO idea, but the big G, is only 'premium' these days! The 'student' line now being the purview of Epiphone.

      Guys, do the inflation math. Student models used to be much more expensive. We have been spoiled with the influx of cheap Chinese guitars. This is what guitars cost when they are built by workers who are paid better.

    The more I play a single pickup guitar, the more creatively inspiring and inspired my playing seems to be, which probably seems strange for an instrument with supposedly limited tonal range/variations. Now if only Epiphone could get their skates on and do a single P90 equipped SG ala their excellent ''inspired by Gibson" LP Junior. Great work as always!

    Great video :) I love this guitar by itself. But when just rolling down the tone knob is not enough for me to get a closer neck sound, I use my graphic equalizer pedal to get it and the result is amazing. You can use it both in front of the distortion and behind it. Just try it! :)

    I recently joined the "SG club" (sort of) when I got the Epiphone "1961 Les Paul SG Standard". It's a great guitar. I tried a fair number of Gibson SGs but none of them happened to connect with me, but this does, for whatever reason. But, I have admired the P90 equipped versions (both the LP and the SG, and both the 2-pickup "specials" and the 1-pickup "Jrs"). I suspect there's one in my future. Thanks for the demo!

    I just got one of these a few days ago as a gift from a bandmate because they felt my beat-to-death Cort Effector was holding me back. After a few minutes of playing I rock-hard agree that it was! Seriously, I had such a hard time with basic stuff like palm muting or playing high on the neck and going from the Effector to the SG Junior is like going from a Walmart kids-aisle toy version of something to the professional version. I say that having really liked playing on my old Cort too!

    Hey SHANE!!! You missed a trick with the junior. You can get more neck and bridge tones by moving your picking hand. Pick really close to the neck will give you more neck tones and picking as close to the bridge as you can will give you more tele like bridge tones. Try it unplugged to figure out the sweet spots.
    I do this with all single pickup guitars and I got the idea watch old videos of blues players like RL Burnside on the Alan Lomax TH-cam channel.
    The SG junior’s are monster guitars very dynamic 😎👍

    I own one of these (a lefty from 2011) for a few months now and I love to play it. It's light, has perfect playability and a gritty, barking tone that easily cuts through the mix, so I even can reduce the volume on my amp a little bit.
    It's not my choice for a slow blues or mellow jazz - but it's a straight and mercyless rock machine, forcing the player to really focus on playing guitar. Every player who has enough confidence about his tone and style should check these out. They're a lot of fun!
    And btw the german company Faber produces compensated tailpieces (also for lefties!!) to deal with the only issue here: intonation.

    Great video Shane, you really showcased what a single P90 can do. I used to own a single P90 guitar previously, and they definitely have their own charm and sound. I think that P90 pickups are the best to get a screaming raw blues tone.

  • @jogo2000
    @jogo2000 ปีที่แล้ว

    My right handed one has the "lightning bolt" compensated bridge. Is it the left handed models that have the similar to LP Junior style bridge?
    Tone controls are great! For some guitars, you have to compromise between a muddy neck pickup and overly bright bridge pickup but you can compensate easily with the tone control. Playing with an unfamiliar amp that's too bright? You got the tone control to make it a little bit easier for the ears. You can also thicken a lead sound nicely with the tone control. It's way underrated.

  • @yorgoshatzis3458

    I own a 21' Jr model and hands down that guitar is a tone machine . When I'm riffing I always put the tone knob around 7-8 and when the solo need is on I turn it all way up. ALSO if you want to imitate the neck pickup its mandatory to pick near the fretboard and not near the the P90.

      I grabbed one of those LP Junior DC's that came out a few years ago with the single P90, and I LOVE the sound of it, and like Shane mentions you can easily get some 'warmer' 'neck PU' type tones just by rolling off the Tone... And even when I play my LP Standard I sometimes spend an entire session never using the 'neck' or 'combo' pickup setting anyway, so if you just want to rock out on some dirty rhythm or lead pentatonics then the single bridge P-90 is definitely sufficient ;)

    I got this guitar. It rocks. Has amazing tone. But for me it had a fatal flaw. I like my action low. You can’t set it up super low because there is no way to lower the dogear pick-up and you end up with the strings too close to the pickup. I would recommend avoiding this guitar if you like low action. If you don’t care about that then its a beast.

The massive frets took a bit to get used to after playing my 2000 Mex Strat with tiny vintage frets. The tone and volume pot on it are great. Even the slightest twist modifies your sound. I bought the same pots and put them in my Epi SG std. If you're a lefty, get reverse taper pots (for other guitars, not this one, it's fine stock). I've swapped out pots so many times on my other guitars, trust me..... Sidenote, these things are amazingly light, when they handed me the gigbag at the pawnshop, I was like, is there even a guitar in here?!

      That's like a 10 min fix on most solid bodied guitars. No reason to let pots hold you back from getting guitar. Unless you don't know now to wire and solder, too. Then it's likely cheaper to let someone else do it and by that time, you might as well find another guitar.
      So it really depends on whether one can do their own work as to whether it's a feasible option.

    The only problem with the current Gibson reissue is the body carves. The original 60/61 juniors have deeper carves which line up perfectly with the pick guard. Deeper arm rest carve too which just looks better IMO.

The nut was binding on the G string, there is a spot of superglue on the fret board and the board itself looks like it could do with another four or five grades of sanding before the frets went on. For a single bridge P90 guitar I would be more inclined to the Les Paul Junior though frankly the Noventa Telecaster from Fender is better finished (albeit poly) and has a ton of vibe for a lot less money
    Nice case though.

    Had one in the early 70s. Played allot of gigs with it. The main problem I had was it did not tune up very well due
    to no intunation tuning. But it was one hell of a slide guitar. If I had only kept all the rare guitars that went thru my
    hands. At the time I could not afford to. And it amazes me of how so many are revered and and so expesive now.
    When at the time there was Not Anything Special about them. All the 70s guitars were nothing compared the Squiers
    and Epiphones made now. Gibson and Fender in the 70s were just mass produced with little quality. My mains were
    an incredible Jeff Beck Les Paul made for me by Electro Harmonix and a Fender Telecaster modded with real PAFs.
    Both are hanging on my oldest son's wall. If they could only talk!!!!

      Did it have the 'lightning' bridge/tailpiece with the 'built in' 'intonation assistance'? Or just the plane piece that you mount at slightly different angles in an attempt to 'improve' the intonation?

    • @silverwings1843
      @silverwings1843 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StreetPreacherr It had the variable Ridge tail piece. Which was OK with the heavy gauge strings it was designed for. It surely was not designed for light gauge strings. But as I said: It was a hell of a slide guitar with heavy gauge strings. Amazing. Thats all I used it for.

    I have this and a 63 just like it. the 2019 is so much better. this guitar helped me decide to buy a 2022 Gibson explorer. so glad I did. anyone who says an Epiphone is better...is poor!

    While you can seemingly get the extra tones out of the controls, if given the choice, why would one choose a single pickup over one with 2-3? Would cost and availability be the deciding factor?

    • @StreetPreacherr
      @StreetPreacherr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the single pickup was like $100 less than the 2 P-90 version. And if you care about wood, the 2019 single PU versions WERE NOT routed for a neck pickup, meaning more resonant mahogany in the guitar body!
      And Gibson ASO raised the price by $100 if you wanted the 'upgraded' versions that moved the output jack from the front of the pickguard to the edge of the body...

    I love my Gibson Studios where the big difference with higher end models is the binding. I'm having a hard time seeing the value in a single pickup no frills guitar. Did I miss something in your review that justifies the $3k US price tag or is it just the Gibson name? I have a P93 Epiphone (3 P90 pickups) hollow body with a Bigbsy that is less than 1/3 of the price of the SG Junior and I get great tones from it and it is fun to play.

    I've been wanting a modern era Gibson SG junior real bad !
    That all ended when my dad bought a 2020 SG jr. And it's really sexy with its red cherry finish but the neck is not comfortable and the bridge isn't near as good as my cheap Gibson les paul special double cut that i only paid $420 for so i have given up on the SG jr. And just got myself a Hamer double cut les paul jr.p90 and it's way better tab the Gibson in every way ! 😢

    I think they are a tadge overpriced, it's a Gibson. Harley Benton did some TV yellow DC jnrs, they were less than 200 quid. The one i tried was just as good as my SG jnr apart from the Pick up and Pots. These are easier to get than those Harley Benton double cut jnr's. The tv yellow model, their hard to come by new.

    I think since so many companies are building great guitars for under 1000 bucks, I look at the prices and go no way. Bought a 1970 SG Standard in 1971,new.Cost 400 bucks without case. Do the inflation rate increase, Gibson is on the money, but owns Epiphone. Is that a win, win?
