I've long been fascinated by the success of the Yamaha Revstar guitars but I'd never had a chance to play them. Ironically perhaps, in the wake of buying a few "luxury" guitars (cough: Collings) I have renewed interest in how far we can go with the amazing "professional" level guitars that are available now.
I've had it for about a week so I'll give my impressions and where I'm leaning toward video ideas with it. And I want to hear what you want to know from Yamaha as I know some folks there that might answer your questions.
Bring your questions. See you there.
    Keith

You video helped me reconsider buying a Revstar RSS20. In my seemingly endless tone search I am super impressed with the quality of the electronics and specifically the pickups. Thanks for all your content.

I modded my RevStar Gen 1 a bit. Tuners and P90s were good, not great. I swapped for Lollar gold foils and Hipshot locking tuners. Also, sanded the gloss off the neck for the first time! Turned this into my go-to guitar. Quality is there.
If it works for Chris Buck, it works for me.

I also love my Strandberg. I did replace the neck with a custom Warmoth neck, and then swapped the body with a custom Tele style body. I also swapped the pickups by installing fralins. Now my strandberg is almost perfect. Gotta figure out how to swap the frets on the warmoth neck with the ones that came stock from strandberg.

Owning a Godin Stadium '59 made my aware of something I didn't like and I didn't realize until I hit the stage and I see the same negative (to me) with the Revstar. The Godin is a marvelous guitar that is built very well and came set up perfectly from the factory and sounds great. What is the problem? The Godin is a T-style guitar without a doubt. But when I took it to the gig and played the same set list I was fumbling and stumbling. I switch pickups and adjust volume and tone controls during a song. The big problem is I couldn't adapt to the pickup switch being below the volume and tone knobs. Fender and Gibson don't do this. I really don't like having to "hop" my hand over the knobs to get to the pickup switch. The first time I played the Godin on stage this was really screwing me around. And the Revstar has the same setup. But look at the classic brands: Gibson, Fender, Guild, Gretsch or Rickenbacker, they never set up the controls like that. This might not be an issue with you, but it really was an issue with me. YMMV.

You absolutely need to check out a Squire Cabronita Thinline telecaster. Just a light killer guitar. ?Has Pickups that look and feel like Fender Jazzmaster pickups. But the bonus is, adjustable pole pieces. I love mine. A beautiful sounding and playing piece of lightweight magic! I"m 68 with a bad back. The only thing I wish is had was a belly cut. I have one of the low end ones with a small crack in the side. I got it in a pile of guitars on trade. This very particular one sounds like a $500 guitar at least. None of my others have been quite this good but they've always been wonderful for the price. Often need a lot of set up in my experience but great guitars. I'm an admitted Yamaha fan boy, bought and paid for since I was 13. I hardly play the guitars anymore just because of my other options but I play Yamaha saxes and clavinovas every day. Sorry to ramble I just love having someone back me up lol.

EVERY video posted has useful information...
And the sounds of the amps, from before and after repairs, makes it obvious as to the why and how.
Having never personally heard some of the amazing amps Lyle has had the pleasure to get his hands on, has informed of how that particular amp should sound.
Lyles sharing of that knowledge helps me when sorting out amps that are up for sale, or even just trying to dial one in.😎👍

Crazy timing on your video. 3 weeks ago i finally got my hands on the Revstar RSS02T (P90 Standard) and im in LOVE with that guitar. Its phenomenal and i really want to check out more Yamaha instruments. Never really paid attention to them in the past. I really want to sell most of my instruments and get a couple higher quality instruments. Highly considering replacing my G&L Tribute S-500 with the new Pacifica Standard Plus.
My favorite part is the feel of the neck, the fit and finish, body shape, headstock shape, stainless steel frets, and the build quality is amazing. The only criticism i have for it is the "focus boost". I find that feature too muddy for my own personal tastes, but i bet others will find it useful and inspiring.

I agree that Yamahas are quality and well made guitars even for the inexpensive Pacifica models. I have a Mike Stern model but haven't really gelled with it. Not sure if the Seymour Duncan pickups fit the Tele style. Maybe it could do with a set up and a different finish applied to the back of the neck. I know it sounds picky but I found that the front hole for the control plate was drilled too close to the cavity and has splintered/collapsed. Repairable but a bit disappointed.

    • @Lalairu
      @Lalairu 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@paulketchupwitheverything767 I don't think you are being picky, you just know what guitar and specs fit you better. I think it doesn't really sound like a traditional tele because of the pickups, as you are suggesting. It has a hot rail or something like that in the bridge right? Another interesting video with some perspective on guitars that make you want to play them. I agree that the Revstars box above their weight, (no pun intended) and I have the same color and model unit you are talking about. I also have the P90 version of the same guitar which I just modded following PsionicAudio's video on how to do it. I never used the transformer so was looking for an excuse to remove it. His EZ mod work great on the P90 version and would probably also work on the humbucker units we have?
Maybe modding a Revstar could be an interesting thing for those of us with them. There is plenty of space in the Revstar to modify the electronics and I've found simple mods made a nice improvement in tone. Keep your interesting and informative videos coming as you have a unique perspective that appeals to me and I'm sure thousands of others!

I have gen 1 RS620 and a gen 2 RSS02T. Both are incredible. I generally prefer the looks of the gen 1 guitars, but the gen 2 guitars are a bit lighter in weight and are incredibly resonant for being solid-bodied guitars. I also much prefer the stock VP5 P-90s than the VH5 humbuckers, although the V5s are not bad in any way. I also get more use out of the "Focus" boost on the RSS02T than I get from the "Dry" switch on the RS620. I've been pondering getting a professional series one, but I feel that the standard series are so damn good that it wouldn't really make sense for my personal use.

I just ordered a Revstar RSS20 as my very first guitar for my 20yo birthday, I'm a beginner so I don't know much about guitars but its design stuck with me as soon as I entered the store, the neck was so comfortable to play on, I loved its sound, I tried other models like Fender Strats and Telercasters but I found the neck less comfortable to play on and I preferred how the Revstar sounded when playing Rock, and the Les Pauls I tried we're way too heavy for me lol, so I ended up choosing the Revstar, I can't wait to start playing it

Weight is always a weird measure of a guitar's worth to me. My Les Paul is 10 pounds, so it may just be my frame of reference. My Strat and Tele are considerably lighter. But I've worn all on stage for a couple of hours, I've never really found that I am more tired from the LP than the Strat. I don't care about weight, I care about sound and feel.

I agree! I've personally had zero problem or interest in a guitar's weight. I kinda get though, the demographic skews older so comfy becomes more important. I'm not a young man anymore, but I focus on my physical health quite a bit. The vast majority does not.

But I think the reason Yamaha doesn't get the love is Yamaha is a professional grade instrument without any romance, period. No lust, no emotion, they weren't around in the 1950s and '60s when the Gibson and Fenders became legends. Everyone want a gold top LP and a early 50s Tele, 57 strat. Emotion is it.

Yamaha has an artists services shop (YASLA) in Los Angeles that does builds mostly for artists and promotion, like Ibanez LACS.
There are some really cool builds - and we've come full circle, Ibanez, ESP, Yamaha, and many other offshore companies do build instruments in the USA, albeit somewhat limited to non-extant public access (used market and auction opportunities exist though) it's none the less a real thing.

I have a 2023 Yamaha Revstar RSS02T in Swift Blue (the P90 version with the custom tailpiece) and it's 8.2 lbs. Very comfy with a 3" wide strap. I don't feel the need to do any mods to my Revstar other than replacing the stock white pickguard with a 3-ply black-white-black pickguard to match the black headstock and bound neck. I enjoy all of the sonic options with the 5-way switching and slight overdrive on the push-pull tone knob. The Revstar is understated elegance.

"All you need is one Gibson and One Fender" ... You should listen to the Bill Kirchen Hot Rod Lincoln youtube video (best is the checkered shirt in PA performance). He does all the guitars and players with a Tele. A master class in player versatility. ... My personal best mod is a Tele Esquire with a hot humbucker bridge pickup lowered with raised screw poles and a 4--way switch to control both bobbins and get most of the classic tones (Strat Middle (and Neck)/#2 Strat Quack/Tele Bridge Twang/LP Hot Humbucker. The other is a blocked trem Strat SSS wired with the Armstrong Blender mod to spin from stock to Super Strat series HSH. If forced down to one guitar it would be the Tele Esquire-H.

Yamaha Revstars in the '90s in Hong Kong were widely considered a real great Les Paul alternative. Especially since Epiphones at the time weren't too solid until about 2010.
That two-guitar collection video or discussion would be fantastic. Surprised with what I ended up with (two Jazzmasters and a St Vincent Music Man). They cover everything. I think an HSS would cover most things, can see an HH guitar doing it all for a lot of people too.

Yamaha quality is great and continually gets better with time. I own a Troy Van Leeuwen SA-503 TVL that I bought while shopping for a semihollow back in 2010. The 3 P-90 setup with series/parallel switching rips and I’d argue it’s better built than the Henry J-era Epiphones by far. It’s unfortunate people look down on these. Playing one is a real treat!

    What's enough? Hmm🤔
I've been building and repairing guitars for 25 years, and designing, building and service amps for twenty. For me it's more about getting the "most out of the least" in regards to my 😂signal chain, more than how much gear I am running through. I've had an aversion to the idea of "always on" pedals pretty much since the term starting getting bandied about. It started when i first discovered how great single coils running into a clean amp sounded with a Dyna Comp decades ago. That percussive click that you get @10:00-11:00 sounded amazing, so i used it all the time. Some time like 2 months later something happened to my power supply or batteries, and i couldn't use it. I was somewhat surprised to find that my playing, that i had hitherto thought sounded great, had infact fallen to dog shit. I didn't really know how compression can cover up sloppy playing. It was the second pedal i ever owned; i only bought it because pedals were cool and it was $20 used, so i certainly wasn't well versed in gear at the time, so i never noticed my playing getting sloppy. While i still love the sound i get from various compressors, I've since been careful to use it sparingly. That "what if i can't use it" fear has always stuck with me to some degree, so when I'm putting together a rig it's always going to have only what i feel i absolutely need. Sometimes that means an amp, a boost and maybe a delay, and other times there might be a dozen pedals. I always move down the chain. First at the guitar; then the volume and tone controls, and then the amp. When i dial in the amp, i approach it from the idea that if I only had the amp, how would i have it set to doing the best? Then I'll move onto whatever gain pedal that I'm going to rely on the most, and getting it to sound great with just the amp, and then i move onto the next pedal.
Don't get my wrong, this doesn't always yield the best results. If for instance: I'm playing through a Fender amp, but i have some AIAB like a Plexi sounding overdrive, that main OD that i set up to sound good with the amp might not sound great if I'm going to use it with that Marshall-drive, so i might have to add something else, or find some compromise with the OD.
    That's my 2¢.

My black Element weighs the same, 7lbs 12ozs. I searched a bit for a lighter weight example also. I bought mine as a mod platform and it has SD '59/Custom hybrid and Distortion pickups in it now. With a push/pull tone pot to coilsplit them and modern wiring with a treble bleed curcuit. I almost always keep the volume backed down to around 3, and the thing rips quite heavily. These guitars are in no way bright. Full, yes. Bright, no. If it was overly bright, a Distortion wouldn't be the best pickup to use in the bridge. But it actually works great with the warm full tone of this acousticly chambered all mahogany guitar.
