Watching this (yet once more) after hearing of the cancellation of a Disney Star Wars film planned to be directed by one J.D. Dillard, who actually was a fan of this very game. Will also be catching up with this when it comes to the TFTC runs too. Lore *(might have to include a summary of The Stele Chronicles, which happened beforehand, in the intro video something; I just need to make one first):* Maarek Stele, our player character, is just being bored to wits in this backwater outpost due to being put to safety away from suspected traitor elements who killed his former commander (and also captain of his previous station, the ISD Vengeance) and occasional mentorly father figure, Admiral Mordon. Of course, *things change at this point onwards.* In the meantime, Ace Azzameen (X-Wing Alliance) is implied to be just doing normal family business at this point, before things went to kriff. Also, the Airam sector (X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter) is about to have a war brewed in it, with the likes of Rogue and Avenger Squadrons preparing alongside the Rebel and Imperial forces respectively. Gameplay: This will be TIE Fighter (the craft, not the game proper) mission 1 out of 6 (excluding the combat sims of four for each craft), and what better way to lively start the game than to send in some dangerously turreted Escort Shuttles against the likes of you, an unshielded titular TIE Fighter as a Secret Objective... I am loathe to say this, but this is just the Dark Souls philosophy striking us, the players.
@@LPhoenix That's why I loathe saying it. That game trilogy, however great that is (though the second game is more flawed), sure has gotten way too pervasive in how we define game difficulty. A more accurate term for this could be the Nintendo Hard trope.
Must say, LPhoenix is one to trust when it comes to completionist runs of sims. Hope there are others out there that do the same to, say, FreeSpace 2, Tachyon: The Fringe, Freelancer, and maybe even Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe and Falcon 4.0 BMS.
Hiding behind the Freighter was an interesting tactic. I usually head straight for it, and dodge its shots. Then once it turns its back on me... it's doomed! The "platform tactic" is exactly what I use to get rid of the Escort Shuttles. They are named "Tough" for a reason ;)
I've got really good news for you then! On july 2 there was a new mod released for X-wing Alliance. It's called TIE Fighter Total Conversion. Basically they converted the TF missions into the XWA engine. We, the players are currently helping them in balancing for their upcoming 1.1 patch, but it's already in a good shape! Release trailer can be found here: th-cam.com/video/oEVrdwZ9bEk/w-d-xo.html
One of them shot the other, this angered the other the shot the "one of them", after this vice versa. It's a mechanic for the AI in Tie Fighter. I think it was made for preventing the player to destroy many allied crafts as this works with the player.
Saw something like that happen once when playing the mission where your goal is to whittle away at Harkov’s TIE Avengers. While trying to inspect shuttle Toten (I don’t know how the hell I still remember these names after all these years) the Protector fired on me. I dodged the shot, which then hit the Rebel station, which returned fire on the Protector. They continued exchanging fire until the Protector entered hyperspace as scripted. I almost assumed this was intentional and that the lore reason for the Protector’s departure was due to a breakdown in relations between the Rebels and the defectors.
In my lore headcanon, they're probably grudging pirates, if not a sleazy cell of Rebel hardliners, sent there so to be a distraction. Suffice to say, not only were they late, they were also quick to be angered against each other.

Just did this mission, and those E/S are brutal. It's them flying in and mowing down everything in front which makes it bad.
