    The best thing about that famous scream is Mike said Chester was on point vocally that day and during editing he had to lengthen the backing part of the song around it because Chester held the note longer than he was supposed to, just epic

    "One of the best aggressive vocalists ever" Hard agree. This is also probably the best insight into any vocal performance I've seen on youtube, and you have the pipes to back up the words and demonstrate. Very well done all around. Respect my man
    edit: had to sub, your interaction is awesome dude. i think you are just an awesome person lol, and definitely an expert, aficionado, lover of music. dunno how to put it into one word, but your passion comes through in your videos and the way you perform. you touched on every aspect of this performance perfectly and you put yourself into understanding it, if that makes any sense. this is a great tribute to Chester

    You're the *man* for analyzing this song, especially in a way that a baritone would have to approach it. We have to do what works for our bodies, and full chest is how a baritone messes up their voice for a song like this. But that's ok to do a different approach. It might sound a bit different, but none of us were going to have the same sound as Chester anyway. Not even most tenors.

    24:00 does anyone know what performance is from?
    The hardest part to sing for me is when Chester sings a high note in the chorus during Given up.
    Like the "Up" on a high note ends with "me" with the same high note.
    my voice got messed up singing this hard than crawling.
    I came here to see you doing 17 second scream and you nailed it! and thank you for making a breakdown of this song and it's one of my favorites! hardest part is the 17 seconds scream I tried to do one breath like him comparing to a song "With you" live in Milan. My request: Can you react to all rock metal singers doing longest scream live like Chester Bennington, Oliver Skies, And other rock/Metal singers? These songs were definitely one of the hardest long screams i ever heard.
    Keep it up and stay safe!

    The only scream I've heard that is longer is a different sound done by James Maynard in the grudge but it's a less belted noise so it explains why it is longer. I believe from memory Chester's scream is 19 seconds. Where as Maynard yells for 24.

    I've slowly been working on his style of screams. Not having a clue how. I would typically just approach it with a more black metal suited fry scream rather than this distorted scream with a note behind it. Got to where I can sustain the 18 with my cheat scream. Then I realized wait... there is a note behind that. How the flippidy fk is he doing that? I've been more of a growler than a screamer/singer for the longest. So singing with dirt was beyond my comprehension. Your videos have been helping me unlock more grit. Still can't quite do this but it seems everything is right with what you have here, especially love the scream parts of this breakdown. Very very helpful. Keep it up man thanks so much for these.

    A lot of the higher vocal fry screams by Chester sound like they're those newfangled 21st century metal screams that don't involve the proper vocal folds at all, just the false ones. It's like a voiceless scream. Or a whisper scream, if you will. It's much easier to do than singing with distortion, once you find the right technique. (Can't believe I'm saying this, since I had no idea how to do them myself until very recently. I kind of stumbled into it while stretching and yawning, and during an occasional sneeze.) And it's not very loud at all, like you said. I do like the growly vocal belts you're doing instead, and I can't do those properly at all, but they sound a lot more rock / grunge than what Chester does in that section. He does seem to be able to inject a little bit of voice into that sound too though, when he wants to, like you said - that mixed forever scream hits different.

    • @dougthemoleman
      @dougthemoleman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wonder if he's doing the forever scream with just the fry too. But the way he's shaping it somehow makes it sound like it has more vocal heft? Phenomenal technique, however he was achieving it.

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ^^ THIS! I've been round and round on it myself. Especially after considering the isolated vocal track... there is a LOT more SING in it than a typical 'voiceless/whisper"fry" type' scream. If you listen to his NOTES in those screams, it seems to feel and sound (with my voice) as NOT the initial thing you described. I think it's also not completely what I suggest in my "exploring the vocal break" type scream either. It's ALL false cord area vocal tract engagement. It's all airflow management and moderating engagement of the primary cords for a CERTAIN BALANCE. I also think that Chester had a VERY HIGH chest resonance/voice so what he does with that forever scream takes advantage of his amazing airflow control AND his ability to hit a D5 in chest (something I can't do... a D5 is always mixed which changes airflow and positioning as well. I LOVE this type of dialogue!! Keeps me thinking and examining!!

      @@elijahechicagobearsboyd5734 I dunno. Invincible, 7empest, Descending, Culling Voices, Fear Inoculum, and Pneuma all might be my favorite songs, too. I would argue that Opiate is their least great album. Then again, I'm the kind of weirdo that thinks that either Damnation or Ghost Reveries is Opeth's best album, and Blackwater Park is number three, so clearly there's something wrong with me.

    Great job! I've always liked the tones of Chester's voice, but never really appreciated all of the nuances and skill. This makes me want to go back and listen to all of my LP music again. Thanks!
