I'm so sorry you never got to see it. I walked away absolutely shocked how amazing his voice was live, even with all the running and jumping. The scream voice was brilliant, but he'd flick back into high notes and they were so clean. Amazing.

Chester is the reason I taught myself vocal fry. Definitely went through over a year of struggling with harmful scream methods. Googled how to vocal fry, got that healthy “âhhhh” sound. The next step is learning how to YELL or project with that sound. That’s what Chester does, and it’s so fun. Rip Chester, 5 years now.

Honestly, i think any vocalist needs a strong basis of voice before doing fry stuff.
Strongly recommend using these to develop skill. th-cam.com/play/PLZriB9FG0sDdcqkeyCo1jT84fruyWXBdA.html&si=Cqlh8nSqb9fODJyk
And literally, I just googled how to fry scream, and I found a healthy method that I practiced and progressed within weeks to months for the desired effect.

Not a singer, though I have played music, but I am one of those who likes to know how things are done which makes me appreciate the skill involved. I have been watching you off and on for a few years. The biggest things I enjoy is the variety of singers you analyze on this channel. It was your video on Harry Styles that really made me reevaluate him and his music.
Chester, however, has always been someone I have been impressed with. He seemed to make everything effortless. What really made me start to pay more attention to him was his cover of Adele. Something to look at.

Before he very sadly died by suicide, Chester lived with his family in Palos Verdes,CA, a beautiful part of LA area overlooking the ocean. My sister and her family also lived there and they met and became dog walking friends. They would call and call each other to schedule meets with dogs several times a week.He loved his family, his dog, laughed a lot, and seemed quite happy. My sister never knew about his fame as a musician and had no idea who he was.He never mentioned it. One day, news of his death was reported on TV and my sister was flabbergasted and so sad and shocked to hear he had died.RIP Chester😥

I haven't listened to LP since Chesters passing until this video. If it pops up on the radio, i have to change it, i get so bummed out. LP was the first band I got to choose to listen to and follow, buy their cds, etc..that wasn't a band my parents shared with me that I also liked, like Led Zeppelin, Alanis Morrisette, Alice Cooper, Rush, etc. LP was MY band as a teen. LP and especially Chester have a very special place in my heart as it appears to be in yours, Sam. Great to hear his voice after all this time. Thanks for the coverage, Sam :) What a fucking voice.

Linkin Park and Chester helped me through my first (and worst) depression experience. It helps me even to this day when I start sinking back into that funk. I always know that I will be able to come out the other side and until then Linkin Parks music gives me energy to get through each day.
Chesters death still brings tears to my eyes. Knowing that he died suffering from the same thing he helps cure me of, is heartbreaking. I wish that he had had something to help him, like he and Linkin Park continue to help me.

I can do fry pitched singing/screaming but it sounds soft. It's not girthy. Then again, I don't practice at all. It's interesting to me how much more of a mystery vocal techniques are from other instruments. I've never seen musicians argue as much as singers over what's going on on a certain performamce. Edit: I don't really practice my voice but I have been exploring all my life and am a big fan of singing as an instrument.

There are so many good live recordings of this song.
Somewhere his screams are just next level to the already "normal" next level he normally does.
Other time it looks like he really tells the story with his entire being, hitting himself while singing words.
Shaking, putting his hand on his throat, so on.
Chester, and LP as a band was just different. there music, the lyrics.
And that made them for ever legendary.

You can also create the scream sound without damage and more distortion… by utilizing “inwards” or while breathing in.
I find it easier on the voice… and also makes switching between the distorted scream and clean outward vocals far easier and smoother.
I find it useful when covering Jared Leto (30sec from Mars), drowning pool, Korn, Disturbed… etc…

It's sad that people keep reacting to live versions of this song where he doesn't perform the most impressive vocal feat of the song. He very rarely was able to do the full scream in the bridge, so he cut it in half if he didn't think he could make it. But there is a small handful of times he pulled of the full thing. This isn't one of them though.

Chester Bennington was a lyric tenor and possessed a three octave tenor vocal range, beginning at the low bass G (G2), and reaching its peak at the tenor G (G5). His vocals showed tremendous durability for the entirety of his career.
Chester Bennington had the same vocal coach as Michael Jackson, namely Seth Riggs. In an interview Seth Riggs did with redbullmusicacademy he talked about working with him:
Q: You worked with Tina Turner on Tommy - can you talk about what that experience was like, preparing her to sing “Acid Queen?”
A: I was introduced to her by Ann-Margret, whom I also was working with. She would only be singing [imitates Tina Turner’s upper register], that kind of thing. And she says, “People really love that.” I say “Yes, but it’s abuse.” And I said “Of course, with the money that you have made and the young men that you’ve married, you can pay for anything. You don’t have to sing that, but it would help you if you used [singing in a lower chest register].” She said “Yeah, but that doesn’t give you the character that this does.” I said “I know it doesn’t, but that’s what people do that want to save their voices for a longer term.”
That’s sort of the same thing that Michael did when he went [impersonates a Michael Jackson shriek]. But he goes in the chest and then flips into falsetto so he wouldn’t hurt himself.
Look at this young man that just killed himself, hung himself. Chester [Bennington]. I showed Chester this. He said “But that’s so easy.” I said, “Chester, you have a wonderful facility, but look. We’re sitting in a car now right? Who is that little baby and that lady sitting over there?” He said “That’s my baby and her nurse.” “I see. And who is the lady with the older child sitting in front of her?” “That’s my child, my older child, and my wife.” “What kind of a car are we sitting in?” “We’re sitting in a Mercedes-Benz.” I said, “How much was it?” He said “This was a special one. The fellow didn’t have the money for it and we got it on sale.” But I said, “How much?” He said, “$150,000.” I said, “Wouldn’t you like to continue this, the way you have it now?”
I didn’t know about the other things that plagued him, because I had to read about what they were. We didn’t get into that. I’m not a psychiatrist. But I said, “Could you do it? I know that you pull up a lot of chest when you do it the old way, but the new way, you don’t. So, make you a deal. Get me half and half. Do it ‘half-bad.’” He said “OK, I’ll try that.” It gets them the character they want but without killing their voice.

I love Linkin Park and I can feel how much you love them too and how much you miss Chester. He will be missed always!
I love how respectful you are, always. No matter who is the singer, what is the genre or how experienced the person is, etc. You are very objective, respectful and kind. You make me believe that there's still hope for humanity. Don't change, Sam! No matter how hard life can get sometimes. Don't let it change you!

like so many, Chester was the bouy in the ocean of my teenage years. I really love seeing these videos popping up again even though i've seen them all back in the day when they came out. the thing that really stands out to me is the quality of the sound during this performance. it sounded so clean and crisp that at the start i was pretty convinced there was some post-recording pitch correction going on. however, further on in the video some slight imperfections and impurities started showing which made me desmiss that thought, or they've just done the post processing very very well. either way, in terms of live sound, this must be one of their prime performances and even though this might not be Chesters' most awesome proudest performance, it really shows him in his A-game and why he was such a legend. even now, continuing to amaze and inspire so many!

There isn't a single word in any vocabulary that could describe Chester's excellence. All we can say is that there will never be another like him.

Really glad that you shout out Mary/VoiceHacks, she's incredible at teaching to scream and extreme singing styles in general. When I first started learning years ago I found her channel and I've stuck with it ever since.

I felt so called out on that whole part about the crack in the chorus. Just like… “How the fuck does he know??” Lol

Thanks for reacting to this. I suggested this video in your post from earlier because, in my opinion, this is one of the best metal song performances out there.
    Keep up the great work!
