Google Photos | How to Enable People & Pets Recognition

- Google Photos ability to group similar photos together based on whom is in the photo is disabled by default in some countries. This video will explain how to enable it, and so that live albums can be used on the Google Home Hub.
You can also search for photos by people once enabled, therefore re-living forgotten memories
[UPDATE] This method may no longer work in the EU, researching other options.
[UPDATE] Once VPN is established, use your browser to navigate to google photos, within the browser, the option should appear.
[UPDATE] Google has announced that this feature is coming to the EU & UK very soon by default (in an update to Google Photos)

I should point out, this feature does not populate instantly, in fact after a week or so of nothing happening, I swore it didn’t work at all. Then suddenly facial recognition started, slow at first, then loads populated. Good luck, I hope this works for you.
I have this option, but it dosen't work for 1 or 1 + half of week:(
It can take ages to populate. I activated on another account and took a couple of weeks, it also seems to need new photos to start detecting faces.

Thanks for the video. Face grouping is enabled on my account and my 'People' folder had a lot of tagged faces. HOWEVER- my problem is that when I try and create a new album, it does not offer me the option to 'Select people &Pets' which is essentially a LIVE or as Google calls it "auto updating album". It only gives me the option to select photo but not people.
I am a Google One customer so in contact with their email support for weeks now and the answers are unhelpful at best. Not sure how to make this work!
I did all that and now it works on my iPhone and iPad but on my Mac I get the People option in Albums but not the group faces option in settings. Any suggestions?

It works if you do it via chrome. It does not work through the photos app
I have a question
Is there a way to manually tell google that these two "people" are the same person
Because it has 2 different images of me set as two different people and theres no
"Are these people similar" option popping up
Try naming both albums with the same name
Is this still a good work a round? I have tried the same. The UI is slightly different 5 years later. "Group similar faces" is the menu item however when you click it it does nothing.
I have a question about manual face tag. No websites or youtube videos has explained this. What happens after photos are manually tagged? Does GPhotos stopped recognizing the faces automatically. Or does GPhotos learn even better because of manual tagging?

Hey Chris. Thanks for posting and sharing this. Very very useful. I followed your instructions and bingo - it worked and photos were starting to upload from my existing folders on my PC and placed into 'people albums' on Google photos. The free data on tunnelbear came to an end so I followed their suggestions and got another 1000mb free. Since then none of my remaining photos has been added to the people album although tunnelbear does seem to be tunnelling. I have noticed that the group faces option is still available on my phone but it has disappeared from the PC? Any advice or guidance would be immensely appreciated. Thanks Chris.
You only need tunnelled for the initial setup. Once you have made the configuration change, you can disconnect tunnel bear and the setting will persist. You may need to come out completely of any browsers on the PC for the setting to show, bit the setting should be present and persist on all devices

How many will it take to recognize and start
I already on this feature but only some face not grouped and some grouped plz solve
It can take several weeks to group the faces. I found it can appear to be doing nothing, then suddenly lots of grouping will occur.

Once enabled, it will take a long time initially to start populating. I find having new photos for it to start working with speeds this up. It will then start to populate with historic photos too.

Suppose I have 24k photos that are already backup and deleted from my phone. So now I turned in face grouping how many days it will take to show me the people and pets
Mine took about a week to start populating.
Before it came. Later on unfortunately I switchoff face grouping and swithon. So are you sure I will come in people and pets after a week
It's been 2 days I have activated face recognition but it is not working what should I do??
It can take a week to 10 days to start populating. And initially only a few at a time, then it will.ramp up

Hi looks like Google photos in the UK now has face grouping has an option by default. Is there any way of enabling live albums (people and pets)? VPN doesn't help unfortunately
Once you have face grouping enabled, and have some faces categorised and named, the option in "new album" for creating a live album should appear. The option that appears is called "select people and pets" however it only appears once faces have started to categorise. If grouping is not showing, try the VPN method, but use Chrome to access Google Photos rather than the photos app, this has had more success recently.

Once enabled, go back into the app, access Group similar faces and there will be an option called "show pets with people"

Have you tried the method of loading the Chrome browser and accessing the setting that way (whilst on VPN). It's mentioned further down in these comments. (I will pin it). Also this feature is finally coming to the EU (If you are located here) by default very soon
I have used this VPN and others and still not working!!! Any ideas
There has been a recent update to Photos, so I re-tried this to make sure it still worked. As long you as you have VPN to USA turned on when first looking for this feature, it should appear (you may need to force the app to stop before trying). Once the extra menu appears, you no longer need VPN. Getting images to populate takes a long time and appears to be triggered by new photos. You can wait a couple of weeks for this to populate.
@@iCTOUK thanks for your quick reply, I have tried redoing it and it still doesn't work for me, I forced stopped it, cleared cache + storage and it still doesn't work🤔🤨, I have made sure location is on and that Google photos has permission. Any ideas??? I'm on a OnePlus 5 just for reference
Strange, to test I have just created a new Gmail account, loaded Google photos app to make sure the setting is not present, then enabled VPN Tunnel, reloaded the app and the option appears. I would note though that this time it did not appear straight away, I had to stop and start the app again for it to appear. The other option I have found to work is via using a VPN on a laptop and use the browser to also enable it. That has worked in the past for us.
[UPDATE] It would appear that an update has been applied to Google Photos that now prevents this method. I just checked via a desktop and this VPN method also no longer works on there either. This really hacks me off, Google has to stick by EU rules for this and browser choice whilst Apple has face recognition in Photos and installs Safari by default on all devices. ( My device I tested on from my last comment has an old client).
