    Many Thanks Steve, I only have one paper photo of my mother, using your expertise, I was able to save a much better digital picture than the original paper photo. Many Thanks for saving my memories.

    I am so very glad I ran across your video. I have now officially switched to this Google Scan App to scan all of my old photos. Thank you for this video.

    What a coincidence! I was using this app for a project yesterday. The only downside is the footer that you'll have to cut off with a photo editor.

    • @gsau3000
      @gsau3000 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You know, it allows you to adjust the corners even after you have saved the photo. So long as it's still in the app's history.

    Love using this app! All we have to do now is unearth our overflowing tub(s) of photos. in the basement and get to work re-organizing them to make some sense of if all!🤪 I love how you explain all these apps so simply!! I have only used PS so far to take some photos for selling DVDs or CDs on eBay. Works great for that use as well if any other sellers are reading this!👍🏻

    • @psdaengr911
      @psdaengr911 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Take the tubs out of the basement, it's the second-worst place they could be after an unheated attic.. Go through the one tub at a time, putting aside only those that you think your kids or grandkids might care about when they are adults. Box up everything else and put in in a temperate dry area until you're visited by a family member. Take what's left and have another adult, ideally a sibling, go through those together and choose the best half. I suggest a few of you growing up and the best one that you can find of each family member at that time and deceased grandparents If there are more than 100, invest $100 in a used photo scanner. Otherwise, take them to a photo scanning shop.

    A really good photoscanner passes the captured image straight to the best editor available. A DSLR with the appropriate quality lens can get results no phone app will produce in a long to come. I use the phone scanner app for capturing snippets from the daily newspaper and suchlike. For quality improvements one needs quality raw material with wide tonal ranges. Any decent photoshopper knows the pitfalls and for stuff worth preserving that little extra time makes the difference. Those that understand histograms will agree with me.

      Indeed, I tried it on an iPhone: the quality of this app is poor, colors are wrong, lighting is wrong, sharpness is poor.

    Thanks for this! I have many old photos and have tried scanning them but glare is such a problem. I have downloaded the app and plan on using it alot. As usual, great presentation, right to the point. Quite a family resemblance in those photos!

  • @Ullimately
    @Ullimately 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thats just for dummies. With sufficient lighting you dont need a flash to make copies of your photographs. Even better: Take the negatives and make digital images out of them, invert them and voilà the image quality is better than copying your photographs. Printed photos are like JPG files while negatives are like RAW files.

    • @dottotech
      @dottotech  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You completely missed the point. Often you don't have an environment with sufficient lighting, or the photo is glossy or under glass, or there are no negatives to be found. This is a great solution, there are better ways, but this is a practical way.

    Nice tutorial but I'm finding the results are hit or miss. With a little understanding, I'm finding I can find a better positioning to reduce glare myself. But it's not a bad attempt from Google.

    PhotoScan is not compatible with my Lenovo TB-X304F. Apparently lots of users of different devices, including Google's own devices are having this problem and Google don't seem to be able to give a reason why or fix it.

  • @TomWilson8003
    @TomWilson8003 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I have to be honest. I wanted to love this app, but I must be a super klutz because I find it very difficult to line up the dots - so does my wife. Perhaps we are using it incorrectly.

    • @dottotech
      @dottotech  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I found it pretty easy. PLay around with moving the whole phone, not jut tilting it for the buttons

    • @KatieFrys
      @KatieFrys 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tom Wilson Don’t try too hard! As you’re using the app, it’ll tell you to ”keep the device flat” (can’t remember the exact wording, but you know what I’m talking about). THIS IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE to anyone struggling!

    • @GeeksOnTour
      @GeeksOnTour 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Realize that you don't need to touch anything, no finger on the screen - just hold the phone and move it so the circle is over the dot and you should hear a click - then move on to the next one.

    Great video, Steve. Google PhotoScan is something I will use.
    Slightly off topic, but I have a question for you about glare. When making your video at your desk, how to you reduce the reflection from your computer screen so it doesn’t appear in your eyeglasses?
    I’m currently making a series of videos for my own TH-cam channel, and I use my computer screen as a teleprompter, and when I inspect the finished footage, sometimes I can’t even find my pupils-just the reflections from the computer screen beaming back at me.
    How do you compensate for this in your own work?

    • @dottotech
      @dottotech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question that I haven't seen answered anywhere ... yet. Maybe you can help. After we scan with PhotoScan is there any way to eliminate red eyes? Or, do you know of another app that can do this, easily of course. The ones I've tried with the circles give an unnatural bright blue to all eyes. Thanks so much.

  • @TheDobsonic
    @TheDobsonic ปีที่แล้ว

    Like your videos but in this case I beg to differ. Flat bed scanning is almost always higher quality. Photo Scan is fine for snaps in a hurry but its not archival and not as clear.

    Hello Steve, i want to scan my family images dating back to the 1920's when photos were very small approx 3"x3" or 4"x4"
    The issue is i need to insert a text box or footer on the digitized photo stating who these people were, or after my passing no one will have a clue.. can this google app provide a footer for text?

    I normally don't hit the dislike, but I did on this one. Photoscan is good if you don't care how the image looks compared to the original and that the outcome is very low resolution. But for higher quality copies of old pictures that you want to archive at there best, this is not the app to use. Scanning on a flatbed at 600 ppi, or even a straight photo with your phone camera is better.
