      I never thought about using just cool yardage! For me, that would be a much easier way to worm out the Attic Window pattern (either one) - panels have always made me very nervous to use!!!

I am not a good miterer 🤣😅. But that little shortcut brought me back! I love that Natalie slows things down a bit & gives more detailed instructions. Love an attic window but I make my frame strips smaller, like 1 1/2” wide. In my option the 2 1/2” strips can distort the picture in the panel.

      I was wondering about doing this. I have this panel and love it but thought the sizes cut here pushed the picture too far apart. Would you still cut the panel into the same size blocks as Jenny did?

    • @melanietannertaylor0401
      @melanietannertaylor0401 ปีที่แล้ว

      @lorriemcdonnell7027 she cut them that size because of the measurements of the panel ! No matter what size panel you have you can make it into an Attic Window quilt. Just make sure you have measurements that divide into whole numbers !! 😊

    I think an alternative to the long sashing and lining up the blocks might be to put a narrow strip of the sashing on the bottom of each block, then you could just make sure the seams of each block line up as you would any other block. I am going to try that!

    I like the attic window look for a panel but how you cut it depends on the subject. First, you have to decide if you are looking out of the window or into a room to know where to put the light source (the lightest fabric), the sill or the sashing. And depending on the subject, you may need to chop some of each "window pane." (The window frame fabrics take up visual space so a person or animal looks distorted if you don't account for that break in the item you're looking at. For example, you can't have a forearm in one pane and the hand in the next without cutting away the wrist that is "behind" the fabrics of the window frame.)

    This is my new favorite quick quilt. Can't believe how quickly this goes together. I have had a beautiful panel that goes horizontal of fall trees in the woods. I used three shades of olivey greens. Just need to put the boarders on. Going to be a wall hanging for fall since most of the trees where I live in Las Vegas are yucky palm trees! Thank you thank you thank you!!!!

  • @Calciyum88
    @Calciyum88 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I like this idea, but I think I would do it a little differently. So normally looking through a window the bars would cover part of the picture. If however, as you did here, you still use the complete picture, things get out of proportion. It's visible in the roof and even more prominently in the right ear of the left deer (well, actually its left ear, but viewed from our perspective it's on the right) - this ear is sticking out in a very odd place. Normally it would be covered by the wood and not even be visible. Also the antlers and the legs are in the wrong place, what odd creatures. So what I would do is calculate how wide in the finished quilt my wooden bars between the squares will be sideways and from top to bottom, then cutting that out of the panel, of course keeping the seam allowance in mind, otherwise it will be too small after sewing and then the deer might lose a big part of his ear instead of having it teleported away from his head, poor little dear... Sure, you'll have some waste then, and the quilt will not be much bigger than the panel except for the outer border, but the picture would look a lot more realistic, I think. Of course, if the panel shows only flowers, shrubs, trees, a brook and waterfall and the like, it doesn't really make any difference, but as soon as living things are cut up and lengthened, even this beautiful nature scene becomes a Halloween quilt, if you know what I mean.
    Nevertheless, the method itself is really cool!! ❤
    As an afterthought, the cutouts could maybe be used for the binding, or maybe even to create a negative image for the backing? 🤔

    Where the sashing row meets the new block window pane row and needs to align with the previous window pane row, just iron a crease into the sashing to match up perfectly the row above or below the sashing. This will put the alignment exactly where it needs to be and won't make any row off kilter. Hope this makes sense?

    I just bought Christmas panels on sale. I will be using this pattern on a couple of them. Thank you both! And, you both look great! Have a great holiday season.
