Blessed to have been born and raised in Grosse Pointe. It doesn't change that much--houses are still appreciating in value. I love this area, especially in Spring, Summer and Fall.
I was truly delighted by this present-day glimpse of Lakeshore Drive, and Grosse Pointe High School South (my alma mater, class of 1965), as well as the other local landmarks. Thanks for the sentimental journey. --- Best wishes.... from Tom, in Florida
I grew up in "the darth vader house". I lived there for about 15 years. cool video. in los angeles now (been here about 10 years) but the video brings back good memories - "darth vader house" & just lakeshore drive as a whole.... - ali
I worked as an electrician during the remodel of the Anthony Soave residence shown at 4:27. It went from about 12,000 sq. ft. to about 26,000 sq. ft. of Custom Everything, and is ABSOLUTELY OVER THE TOP In Every Room and Every Aspect!!! 2000 sq. ft. Kitchen! Heated Driveway and Patios! 600 V. 3 phase Electric Service! So Much More!!! When it was Finally Finished, Mrs. Soave Ran Off with The Painter!!!
Thanks for sharing. Glad to see your vid but I'm sad that most of the really large mansions I saw as a kid in the 60's are gone. We lived in Harper Woods and would occasionally take a Sunday drive to admire the homes on Lake Shore. Still, looks like a very worthwhile drive even now. Would like to visit some time.
My favorite ride is following the water down my mom used to take me to a couple friends homes down there I miss playing around in some of the back yards beautiful homes
My husbands mother and grandparents lived in grosse point farms. His mother grew up with a maid, riding and tennis lessons as well as winter trips to Florida and Cuba. Not the life my husband led.
the old darth vader house.. that's what everyone called it.. knew those people.. sorta.. remember Bill Kennedy at the movies he used to live across the street i think..
So sad that Rose Terrace is gone from this lineup only 40 years after its construction, and replaced by a lot of undistinguished overgrown tract houses. These tract houses are older than it was when this magnificient edifice was demolished. If anyone viewing wants to see a real Grosse Pointe Mansion, look it up on You Tube. There are several videos
"Detroit" (metro Detroit) is actually 300 municipalities spanning 9 counties. Most of them immaculate and vibrant. Many quite wealthy as seen in this short video. Of the 5.3 million people in the Detroit region only about 630,000 live in Detroit-proper.
I wouldn't live right in Detroit either but I live northeast of Detroit and love it. Northwest of Detroit is awesome. I can't afford those areas but lovely to go there
...gated! lmao! there aren't any gates there except for the Ford mansion....it's all open road..you can drive up their driveways if you're crazy/drunk enough...
soundgarden700 “same” meant they were curious also. Duh! A lot of these homes were the big architects now passed down through generations. But they are for sale, and up for grabs
@gramps2matt Does it really matter how long? I didn't know it was a competition. :) There are many details that could of been included. I would have left HW out of it as well. That community is hardly worth mentioning. So, you must be from Harper Woods and a product of GPPSS? Lucky you.
@LeighRay Wow! I agree with you! Old gramps2matt sure sounds like a snob! Let's see HIM post a video if he thinks he can do a better job! I LOVED your video! No narration was necessary! The music was PERFECT and the video was very relaxing and enjoyable!!
Oh, the big old places along the lake are all gone now. Rose Terrace alone has been taken by a number of smaller ones. Oh well. It isn't 1963 any more, is it.
What about GP Yaght Club I worked there in the late seventies.. I went to GP North HS. Star of the Sea and maire elementary. I wouldn't go back..it was not a good place lots of bullies and entitled brats and yes yes I do have a problem with bullies and entitled brats!!
@gramps2matt I appreciate the info. You clearly know a lot about "The Pointes." My intent was to provide visual exposure to some of the more impressive spots that can be seen on a drive through GP, mainly for those who've never even been to Michigan. The text was intended to be a very basic addition to the visuals and music. Your input would have been more appreciated had you not sent it in such a condescending fashion. Haven't dealt in diplomacy or interpersonal skills much, have ya?
@mystuff414 While Bloomfield may have equally appealing homes, the residents portray the difference. GP emulates a 1950's classic style where men are expected to be gentlemen and ladies classy. Dresses, seersucker and collared shirts are commonplace here as opposed to Ed Hardy and V-Neck t-shirts. However, there are many upstanding Bloomfielders as well. Should you combine the residents of the GP South school district with those of Bloomfield Hills you would have one hell of a community.
..this is the town Tom Selleck (Magnum P.I.) was born and raised in..would like to have seen that home..and you didn't mention that Windmill Pointe is the pinnacle of the pointes...and take it from someone who had to learn the hard way...the cops there will take an 'interest' in you just driving thru...
It's a seriously affluent area with an enormous police presence. That said what you see in this video doesn't even reflect the most valuable properties. The biggest, most expensive homes there are on the shoreline. Those do have various fencing, walls and gates. But I expect that is for reasons of privacy more than for any safety concerns.
Michigan doesn't get into yard fencing like alot of states do. In most suburbs chain link fence might be the most but, for a good share there is no fencing at all. Large wooden wall fences are practically no existent or is they do exist they are low not 8' tall. We like our neighbors!! In some cases, it boils down to zoning.
That's an area that began with the automobile era. Old money. New money is out Farmington Hills way. Just because it's near Detroit doesn't mean it's ghetto. Lovely homes north of Detroit.
You should come back for a visit. Detroit's Midtown and Downtown are bursting at the seems with new development and rehabilitations. $10 billion worth in just the last several years. $5 billion more beginning this year and next. Gentrification is working its way into the neighborhoods. All corners of Detroit-proper.
Allow me to add a few details you left out.....what you call Downtown Grosse Pointe Farms has been known to countless generations as "The Hill" Also you forgot to showcase that other shopping area known as "The Village". You had NO narration and should have Pointed out the landmark at the foot of Oxford Road that was an Inter Urban station. Oh and Harper Woods also borders Grosse Pointe Woods. haven't been in GP long have ya.
@jacquelinewithers Sorry Jackie. When it comes to mean-spirited sarcasm I respond with full-blown, overwhelmingly sarcastic force. My apologies if you weren't the one who posted the pea-brained comment that I was responding to. Now, find out who it was so you can deliver the message that was intended for 'them.'
I use to go to Detroit. So many great places downtown. Starting two years ago you couldn't pay me to even go to the nice restaurants and museums. The south side of Detroit coming up from Toledo Ohio is so embarrassing. The big old cities have gone to the dogs. Other suburbs and places are very beautiful.
..what Willie? Not even 2 minutes...you cross over from Highland Park or whatever that hell hole is...and there it is all of sudden..180 degrees of luxury and lifestyle...less than 15 seconds..lol
yea, sure. however. when you have been there and done that,. Life away from such a melodramatic place seems like luxury to me. Grosse Pointe is full of extremely vain and alcoholic melodramatic people. They all need help.. reading all these ohh and ahh comments. you have no idea, bro...what I had to endure.

My uncles house at 1:06. I love the newer mansions that have been built on lakeshore drive . Awesome video pal !!!!!!
It's nice to see some people in Detroit are still living the high life. Good for them.
When I got my license, I was 16 and that drive. The windows are still sparkling. Winter is nice too. Love the music.

My dad helped build some of those mansions. I don’t know which ones they are or if they’re still there but he helped build them back in the 1950s.
Very cool! Thanks for sharing, Jill.
Its so peaceful out there only thing that was annoying were the fish fly's lol
I thought they were older than the 50's
@redwow
I wanted to drive slower but in all five Grosse Pointes it's pretty easy to get pulled over for speeding... OR driving to slowly.

No fences to speak of tells you that this is where the truly wealthy live.
I lived there from 2016 to 2020 miss it especially the parks the fresh air now I'm in NYC sucks here
I had a great childhood growing up in GP but these swarmy posts confirm my feeling that you couldn't pay me enough to go back.
Why because the fish fly's ? Lol
great drive.
Awesome! Glad you got to see it :)
I always hated Grosse point blank movie then I went to college with Grosse point kids and learned to really appreciate that movie more.
Why did you hate the movie Grosse Pointe Blank?
