SSBU Samus Matchup Guide Part 1/2 (outdated)

- This is the first part of my Smash Ultimate Samus MU guide. This is all my opinion so feel free to disagree in the comments, but I also tried to include some tips for a lot of matchups. Part 2 will go over favorable matchups and my preferences on Samus or Dark Samus for each character
Thank you for making so much Samus content! I hardly ever find guides on Samus, and I'm glad there's finally somewhere to find advice on playing her.
@Victor T. Don’t worry, there will be more samus content on the way! I haven’t had this much love for a character since melee doc who I’ve always thought people underrated due to his good (in my unpopular opinion) matchups against fox, puff, and ice climbers which are important matchups nowadays and samus also does well in a lot of important matchups (peach, marthcina, Ike, etc). Considering making a whole vid on her bombs, one on her charge shot, etc. Glad to know ive got some fellow samus homies out there who also believe in her and want to move her metagame forward!
I main samus and this channel has really helped me. I’ve been trying to figure out the matchups for a while now, thanks.

@Nick Woodman lol thank you! Yeah doc is still my spirit animal but samus is my main in ultimate now (in half an hour I may decide I’m picking up joker tho lmao) because I have major faith in her in this game and I just love how she feels. Still keeping my pocket doc and young link because young link covers tons of samus’ weaknesses and because Docs mad stylish, but the only time I really really feel like I need to switch is to young link for fox and Roy so samus is a great character to main or pocket in ultimate.

Its definitely a good video to watch. Nice to compare some of the guys we strugggle with more than others. I'm curious to see the update to what you think. I agreed with a good deal of the matchups you put up there. I'm surprised Zelda isn't higher though. Her neutral special is almost a complete fail safe to anything I want to do and it's dangerous to sit around mid range because her up special can eat you alive in combination with the down special. One of the matchups I tend to have more trouble with. Snake on battlefield is sometimes cancer but generally it's not a terrible matchup Fox and sometimes Sonic can be horrible.
@Daffy Fox thanks! Yeah the new chart is quite different, the chart is done i just need to finish recording/editing tonight. As a preview I think Zelda is even at worst because zair and bair out spaces and shuts her down and her mobility isn’t great. Her recovery is difficult to gimp which is annoying, but neutral b is straight up not that good offline. Fox is still a really hard mu but not as bad as I first thought. Snake is even but volatile depending on playstyle and stage
ultimate is my first smash game and I’m a Samus main, so thanks for making so much content about this character. What are your controller settings?
@secretlyA melon no problem!! I use a GameCube controller with mostly default controls except I have tilt on c stick, jump on L (although I only use that for tilt attack cancelling which is rarely used with samus, dash attack cancelling is more practical with her) and I have stick jump turned off. I keep rumble on to get a slightly better feel of how charged my cs is because you can actually sorta count the vibrations (will talk about that in my next samus vid that I’m starting tomorrow)
It is worth noting though that I use a semi-claw grip (carried over from melee) where I sometimes jump with my right thumb on the x button, but usually I use my right index finger on the y button.
So with 3.0 out I’m gunna need some time to analyze the joker matchup (although it seems even rn, most combos against him are insane and easily gimped and samus can stall the persona gauge, but he seems really really good at camping too) and also mewtwo has just gotten wayyyy harder with his buffs. Definitely changing that placement in part 2.

Lol thanks! Check out part one of my samus guide, the second half sort of talks about the theory i use to decide what moves to throw out. Playing samus is like playing counter strike in smash (tons of other analogies too lol) where good strategy, reads, patience, and decision making is the main focus over fast inputs and flashy tech. Although with bomb movement, zair, and aerial charge shot movement and canceling she has tons of potential for high level mechanics stuff

Hmm nice video. For some reason I struggle more against good ZSS and Sheik players than I do against good fox players.
@Marcus Rondo thanks! I def still think fox is a pretty darn bad matchup for samus (but certainly not unwinnable) and I agree that zss should be a bit higher on this list (don’t worry remaking it and making part 2 this/next week). However i do think that we for sure have an advantage over shiek though; not super heavy but 55-45 or so for samus
This was very helpful, though I would personally put Marth/Lucina as more of a disadvantage for Samus, seeing as she has a hard time getting them into a position where she can really deal damage or knockback.
@Veecy I definitely see how people might think marthcina wins here, and it’s certainly a valid opinion especially since all marthcina got in 3.0 was buffed grab range, but things like bomb and f tilt lead into tons of follow ups and along with zair I don’t find problems getting openings and doing damage. The problem is samus does have an extremely poor disadvantage state here, meaning she gets combod and can’t deal with shield pressure easily. Bombs and zair just stuff their approaches though so depending on the stage samus can usually stay out of disadvantage with good neutral play, and samus’ combos, edgeguards, and ledgetrapping will most likely be almost guaranteed kill confirms on marthcina once samus is optimized. Basically Samus has to work harder than marthcina to constantly chip away for an opening and stay safe, but it pays off imo
It also helps if you punish them early if they're jump happy. Most opponents you face will start to play more on the ground if you can time which kills a lot of what makes them scary. At least this has been something that has been working well for me lately.
When can we expect a part 2?
Dan Lyon I actually just finished a completely new matchup chart yesterday and will start to record it tonight. With so many updates (and more importantly more mu experience on my part) a lot of this i no longer agree with. The tips still apply so i left this up until i could remake it, but the placement of characters is way different in the new one and imo much more accurate. I may do it all in one huge video (in which case it will be up friday) or i might do a new part one (up tomorrow night) and do part two (next Monday/Tuesday).

@Fiery Fission come check out my stream tomorrow night or Saturday; I’ll be labbing samus as usual but also going through each matchup more in depth and answering questions/giving tips. I would like to see what you struggle with in that matchup because I have very few issues with it (offline even less issues because his shield pressure is easier to get out of) but that could just be because I haven’t encountered the best chroms. Also my opinion on this chart has changed a bit (for example mewtwo and is a bit harder now and i don’t think inkling is quite as bad as i did) which I’ll update when I finally get a chance to do the second half.
That's an easy match up for me. But depends on the skill level of course.

Dr. Jay I just got say I love your videos but do you think you’ll go into more detail with Samus techs?
I’m sure it’s simple for you but your bomb placement was awesome in the video and I would love to learn the tips and tricks to master the morph bomb and other Samus techs.
@The3rdRevolution Hey thanks! I certainly will; I’m still getting used to actually explaining things and the way I use bombs and stuff is very instinctive based on how I used to use pills as doc in melee. Think I’m gunna do a whole video on samus’s bombs breaking down when/where to use and the different follow ups. Will probably do one on zair and one on charge shot as well. Each of samus’ projectiles (including bomb and zair) are extremely useful in different situations and have a lot more depth/utility than a lot of other characters moves so i can easily devote a video to each of samus’ specials. There are tons of things I still need to lab as samus myself and breaking down follow up options and how they interact with opposing attacks will probably help me too!
For now though use bombs both as an anti approach tool and as a pseudo dodge at close range; be creative with your bomb placement and follow ups, but the easiest follow ups are probably f tilt, nair, or dair if you don’t have a hard read. I find f tilt the easiest to react with, but you have to angle it properly
