That's what I was going to say.
You're not going to get anything stomping around the woods when you should have become part of the woods like bigfoot, as you said,.. long before sun up or down.
Hunting birds in the middle of the day doesn't help the game think there isn't something different going on in their habitat and therefore changing their habits,...either.
They could have spent the first middle of the day looking for signs (like the the tree rubs), feeding places, trails,.. to pick a good still hunt spot,... probably a lot farther away from their campsite than a couple hundred meters/yards,.. then the remaining middle of the days spent quietly fishing,. just so they wouldn't starve,.. until they finally got a deer.

5:30 Acorns are definitely not toxic for humans. They used to be a staple for natives and Europeans and are still popular in places like South Korea even to this day. But the catch is that you have to process them before eating them because they're filled with tons of tannins, which is what gives them that horrible bitter taste.

Great video. Alittle advice from 40 years of deer hunting. Get out to your spot before daylight and stay till after dark. Most deer movement happens at dawn and dusk. Also, bucks rub their antlers on trees to remove the felt. I start seeing rubs as early as late August in my area. As the rut comes in they continue to rub their scent on those same rubs. Scrape, all deer visit scrapes, bucks and does. Ive even seen a fawn hit a scrape. They use their feet and leave scent in them by peeing over the glands on their hind legs. Bucks visit them to find does in heat. Keep at it. Like I said, 40 years experience and I still have alot to learn.

    • @MichealBacon
      @MichealBacon 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

People like myself who have 41 years experience let those with 40 years or less experience walk out in the dark and sit all day. We, on the other hand, get to our stands around 9am and shoot our deer around 11am to about noon most years. But have fun sitting in your stand all day, I'll be back at camp having a hot lunch and a nap dreaming about the next one. ;-)

The only time I don't like grouse is when they taste like cedar. I like this new view of you. I never saw you as a hunter. Killing an animal is an aquired ability born of need. If you harvest and eat your quarry it is harvesting, not killing. Deer is good eating, especially done in a slow cooker with veggies. Good video as always. Pax.

Awesome video Xander. Isn’t it wild to hold your first dead animal? Not just how warm, but how freakishly limp. First time totally shocked me. And to eat it….it’s hard to describe how it feels to eat something you’ve harvested, seen alive, and taken. It’s like joy, and this sort of respect for your food, too. I read sustenance hunters generally eat less meat, because they respect the work it took to get it.
I was anti hunting when I was young, until I had a sort of epiphany. Animals in the wild die horrible deaths. Like really horrible. Compared to getting shot, there’s no comparison how much easier it is to go from a hunter. And as you said, if you eat any meat, you’re just having someone else kill an animal that probably lived a horrible life, then was killed for you anyway.
And as you said too, bushwhacking, but with a purpose is so different. I just got back a couple weeks ago from 6 days, mostly alone, small gaming and camping. I’d go back tomorrow if I could. Hiked for hours each morning, came back for lunch, and went again in the afternoon.
For the birds, there is so much more than just the breasts. I’m kinda sick of how people waste so much. If you get a few, the legs are awesome. Like little chicken wings. You’ll need a few bids though. And the carcass!! Simmer it in a pot of water, and you’ll have the best chicken soup stock ever!
Acorns are totally edible btw. Native people used them by the ton. You need to soak them to get the bitter tannins out of them, dry them, then grind them up into a sort of coarse flour.
Anyway, thanks for the video. Seems all those Ontario canoe guys are either too "sophisticated" to hunt, or are afraid the flower huggers would get mad. Never be ashamed of what you enjoy…..unless it’s kinda creepy. 😀

I actually killed my first deer today on a solo public lands hunt in Texas. It was a surreal experience and a humane kill. It died within seconds. Super pumped to see your hunting videos! Excited for you to get your first deer.

Grouse was the first thing I ever hunted, was inspired by you and Clay Hayes and took my first ever animal with a recurve bow solo. Got the grouse out of a tree. Super fun seeing you get back into hunting again

Great video Xander. Worth mentioning about hunting that a deer taken by a rifle suffers a hell of a lot less than a deer stalked and eaten by a bear, or worse, a deer that dies of starvation.

I'm very happy, Xander. that I have just discovered your many, really talented nature videos. Here in Finland there are the fells of Lapland with their water bodies, in Norway the fjords and mountains, the Alps are also really wonderful. These have all become familiar. Despite all of the above, I am absolutely mesmerized by the Canadian scenery. Because of the long distances, I look forward to your descriptions. Good luck for future events.

Find a big thick patch of greenbriers for deer, trust me, especially big bucks. And sit right in the middle of em. I get a buck every year hunting in a big greenbrier patch. It's their favorite food and big bucks never have to leave that area when it starts getting cold out. Got two 14 points and a 10 point in the last 3 years in the same exact spot. The first 14 point that I got was a giant!! Got it with a bow and it scored 203¾ inches and won a free mount and a $1000 at our local archery store who was having a biggest buck competition.
I sneak through our field and go about 50 yards into the woods, I have a perfect tree right in the greenbrier patch and see deer all day long.
Dragging them out is a little bit of a pain for obvious reasons lol since it's all jagger bushes, but it's definitely worth it. Once i get them to the field I get the quad or the horse to get them back to the house

I just discovered your channel. Great videos! You're little one-liners you throw out crack me up. I've never had the opportunity to go to Canada, the country is absolutely beautiful. I'm in Tennessee, so I usually have to watch TH-cam to see real snow. 2" is about all we ever get and it's gone in 48 hrs.
