LYRICS:
The guy upstairs is such a freak.
for five years now i've had a leak.
what does he do up there?
All day long he "sleeps all day"
then he goes out and comes home
in the most intoxicated way.
As far as i can tell, he juggles bowling balls
but he's not good at it.
He moves his furniture then at six am
he pulls out the vacuum cleaner
to suck his room.
The guy downstairs is also crazy.
he spent some time in an institute.
it did him not much good
He's off his medication
and he starts screaming
"Virgin Mary, you fucking alien!"
According to him Jesus Christ smokes crack
and other sundry things.
But it's the man upstairs who pulls the strings,
won't let me sleep.
Please, kill that man upstairs.
if you ever loved me, you'll do this one thing,
won't you sweetheart?
Please murder that man upstairs.
if you want to be my friend
you'll have to prove you mean it.
I used to think that rent control was a good idea
until i moved here. now I'm the only sucker
paying more than a humdred bucks a room
And i'm surrounded by lunatics who don't
even need a moon
But it's the man upstairs who pulls the strings
won't let me sleep...
Please, kill that man upstairs.
if you ever loved me, you'll do this one thing,
won't you sweetheart?
Please murder that fuck upstairs.
if you want to be my friend
you'll have to prove you mean it.
Then there's the lady across the hall
who always knows what's going on
and Machu Pichu down the stairs
who is selling crack from door to door.
14B are refuges and 14A transvestite whores.
But you know who is coming home
He's falling up his drunken stairs...
Please, kill that man upstairs.
if you ever loved me, you'll do this one thing,
won't you sweetheart?
Please murder that fuck upstairs.
...if you want to be my friend
you'll help me get a good night sleep
Nope. I'm actually an extremely quiet person at home. I enjoy complete silence so I don't even play music. I only practice in a studio. The song is about my loud ass neighbors!
I KNOW THE FEELING!
i know that feeling, it makes us wish for rightful peace when all we get is a loud ass hell
god, I feel you
Amazing, truly amazing
You are genius hahaha good song!😁🎶🎧
"And i'm surrounded by lunatics who don't
even need a moon"
I absolutely love that line.
By the title and Voltaire’s track record, could have sworn this was gonna be about God. But the joke is that it’s literally about the man upstairs.
He is talking about his own self ,Metaphorically Being inside his head.
@@amyking5712
In a concert in Moscow he said:
"People think the song is about God! It's not! It's about the fucking guy who lived on the floor above me! That guy almost made me lose my head. Anyways, here's a song about losing your head..."
But what I do like about his music is that it's really interpretive.
@@johnfraire6931 I like to think it's about a man losing his sanity, and the guy upstairs is meant to be both a symbol of God, and also of the Mind's super-ego, his sleeping all day and obnoxious behavior reminiscent of God. The guy downstairs is the Id, as well as the Devil, ranting psychotic deranged ideas. The guy in between them is the Ego, having to balance these two opposite forces and failing.
@@thehonorablereverendaddiso1943
Well, Voltaire's music is very interpretive, so you're not wrong in interpreting it that way.
@@amyking5712 i thought that too! Was kinda disappointed when I found out that it was about the neighbours 😅😂
I had a sudden realization.
HowToBasic is the man upstairs.
+Abraxian Absolution don't know but it sounds to me like god is the man upstairs
Thank you man, you must the only who understands me
Nah, HowToBasic is the man downstairs.
...what to do when "the man upstairs" is your own bloody imagination, though? Can't get a good night's sleep to save my life unless I'm drunk off my arse...
I know something that will make you want to go right to sleep...Play the game Dark Souls.
This is a really fun song to listen to when you have insomnia
My D&D group played this as a "theme" for the DM, I couldn't help but giggle inside as I was listening. The party found a mimic the next day who wouldn't leave them alone and when they finally kill it out of annoyance, a goblin stole a trinket off then and ran off.
Don't worry, they got something awesome for being sort of good sports about the whole thing.
That's smart. I should propose that to my dungeon master
It is 2:51am, and my upstairs neighbor just starting vacuuming, prompting this song to go through my head...
Patricia Fitzgerald I think you need to get someone to kill that man upstairs
(I am referring to the song, I do not support the act of murder)
I am 13 years old and I've never met anyone who listens to voltaire's music, which is just sad. I always listen to this song and play various other songs from voltaire while I'm in the car with my mom(which is strange). I always try and show people this amazing music, but I always get ridiculed and made fun of. Anyways, this is by far my favorite song that voltaire has produced, so please keep up the good work.
Don't worry about what others think, just like what you like. And thank you for the kind words!
Are you my clone? I'm the exact same lol
I was your age once, like 18 years ago, but I remember rocking out to Voltaire in the car with my mom. She'd let me play my CD every time we went to Wal-Mart. I come from a small town in Oklahoma, so nobody listens to any music I like now or even then. As you get older, you will understand that it never really mattered what those kids in school thought. Maybe you will one day work for the club/bar that Voltaire visits to put on a show!! Got to see him live at my first ever job! Life is strange, but that's the great part about it.
you keep rockin, homie!
Это не грусная, конечно музыка,, но юмора я чего-то в этой песне тоже не уловила, или может он просто слишком тонкий ?!)🤨
This melody in the chorus reaches my sensibility so much... can't explain. Sometimes some chords just go so well together and it makes me emotional.
This was the first song I ever bought on my phone that had swear words in it
It holds a special place in my heart for that reason
This is the song of the moment in my apartment right now. The guy who moved in this spring apparently has NEVER lived in an apartment before and blasts his damn tv every single hour of the day (he doesn't have a job, I guess...). I have been so tempted for the past few months to buy a HUGE sound system (I play music on my laptop with headphones, cause I respect the building dammit) just so I can BLAST this song back at him 24/7 on repeat, but I just keep whimpering instead and telling everyone "My life is becoming that song..." Lease is up in February and it can't fucking come soon enough. The song makes me feel validated though. If V's gone through it too, I can make it to February... deep breaths, deep breaths... lol
Officially March. How'd it go?
@@lolcat1382 Oh! lol! The guy got evicted in December because he never paid rent. The girl who moved in after him scared me for a bit because the first weekend she was here she had a HUGE ASS and LOUD party. But the police got called on her for noise (by me? who knows? heh) and I haven't heard a peep from her since. It's been so quiet. I can breathe again. I don't have pounding walls 24/7. It's a freedom I hadn't had in almost a year and such a good feeling. I'm so glad I waited the bullshit out. Sometimes in order to get rid of an enemy, you just have to outlive them... old vampire proverb.
I know I'm looking WAY too deep into a song literally just about a terrible neighbour Voltaire once had, but what if the man upstairs is the same guy as from The Chosen, and the person the singer is is the same one as from Ex-Lover's Lovers? I know I'm looking too hard into this, but it's a possibility I think is cool.
My friend mentioned his love of Voltaire. I'd never listened to Voltaire so I asked him to suggest an album. He said "I'll be that asshole. I was there at the beginning with Devil's Bris." So here I am, and this shit fucking rules and I can't wait to listen to the entire discography in order and hear the band (artist? I'm new, I don't know how many people are involved in this) grow.
"And I'm surrounded by lunatics who don't even need a moon"
Love that lyric!
I relate so hard to this song. It's my 2020 theme as I'm living in an apartment and struggling with a man upstairs.
2020 - 2 months into quarantine:
Both listening and living inside the song O.o
Everybody went batshit crazy
I never took the song too literal I always thought it was a song of schizophrenia saying kill the man in my head basically
Brandon Mitchell that's a way better explanation than all the different religious ones
Well you can argue that many people who claim to “hear” god often do so because of schizophrenia
Brandon Mitchell I agree with you
I suddenly empathize with the guy from The Tell-Talke Heart listening to this. He had to do it. Guy was driving him f*ing crazy.
national treasure is Voltaire
Interesting Fact: I started listening to this song while in a poetic mood and began to analyse the lyrics. I started coming to the conclusion that this song was about a god above earth and all of the turmoil he puts us through, and how the speaker is being driven insane by the burden's upon his back (dropped bowling balls) and that those around him have already gone insane, to the point where they worship a non existant moon. Then I looked at the reason and thought "Oh god, I'm an English teacher
If the man upstairs is a god, would the man downstairs be Satan? Hence calling Mary an alien and saying Jesus did drugs? He's trying to lie to humanity, trying to get them to believe falsehoods about their religion to pull them off of the path of holiness?
Been listening to these songs since you posted them. Every once in a while, when life gets a bit rough, I come back to visit these songs. Thanks for these, especially after so many years
Been a fan of Voltaire for years. Love his old and new album
Like anyone who has ever lived in multi-unit housing, I think the lyrics are hilarious and ring so true, but I am also totally blown away by the violin in this song! Love love love the part at 3:28.
every song is like an edgar allen poe story. I LOVE IT!
I JUST TOLD YOU.
Whatever I'm presently working on. LOL ; )
I remember finding the version of this on one of the Unquiet Grave CD's i swiped from an oddly Chaddish friend of mine. Been a fan ever since. There's nothing quite like Voltaire.
My neighbors include:
1. A punk rock drummer who believes the small hours of the night are conductive to creativity.
2. A retired customs officer who discovered home improvement helps him bear the boredom of retirement.
3. An elderly lady with poor hearing who likes to listen to music at 6 AM.
4. A bunch of college kids majoring in wild parties and minoring in public urination.
Not to mention the interior decorators in the shop whose every motion resonates through the reinforced concrete.
That moment when you relate with a youtube comment from 7 years ago
Never gets old. Probably my favourite of V's canon
It's fantastic to see you've uploaded some of your older material to TH-cam! Thank you very much, generous host.
8 years later and im here to say.
Nice profile picture, and taste in music.
@@lucascade7066 About half an hour later, and I'm back to say...
Thanks, bro. You're awesome.
Ive loved all of Voltaire's songs for years!! I keep telling my friends to listen to him but apperently they dont have good taste for music..
It would be a dream come true to see him perform live!!!
i like the way you make your songs about the puzzle pieces of feelings inside the big picture of your mental state
Thanks, Reinhardt! ; )
I first heard your music on Adventurequest Worlds a few years back (It's been a long time since I played that, come to think of it...) and it really didn't appeal to me at first because the sound was different to me (I listen to heavy metal) but today I decided to look you up again because I was in my history class and we were learning of the Voltaire from the Enlightenment Era (I also wanted to hear Tempest again) and it turns out your music is really damn good. I'm gonna keep listening.
AQW gang
Please do! ; )
"That crazy guy downstairs is singing to his imaginary friend about killing me again!"
Blaring this while living above someone.
you are my hero
LOL! How about blasting it full volume when you have extremely annoying neighbors above and below you (above being the top level of the complex and below the 3rd) that make so much noise they act like they own the complex and no one lives above or below them then singing it at the top of your lungs to piss them off!?! LOL!!! Below this particular part of the 2nd floor from the 3rd is the mail and a rec area and so only they would get the noise unless they have headphones in and the noise of running children!
yes.
ABOVE, BELOW AND TO THE LEFT AND RIGHT WITH THE WORLD'S THINNEST INSULATION, FLOORS AND WALLS!
Rilriia Kilurden, also throw in Dirtiest Song That Ain't (With a note to sing in the missing words just to creep them out!) if it's a known fact at least one of them is overly religious or not! LOL! Also, can I have the anti-religious play list!?!
Plenty of uses for it in my town! LOL! Had one person try to convert me/get me to go to their church while paying my bill behind her group at the local diner! I told her, "No, I am a hummus loving, dick mutilating, money hungry Jew!" She tried again! I told her, "I just said no, did your 'God' make you dumb as well as deaf!?! I said I was a dick mutilating, money hungry, heathen! Do I need to get the holy water and wash your ears out!?!" She had none of it and tried again and this time I told the truth! "Look lady, the first two times I was lying and I am actually a flat earth squashing, religion destroying, science loving, satanic, witch, that could destroy your world in two words but I am NOT in the mood tonight and my only god is our lord and master the Flying Spaghetti Monster ~RAMEN! NOW, FOR THE LAST TIME, PLEASE GET THE DAMNED COTTON OUTTA YOUR EARS, STOP FLAUNTING YOUR GHOST STORIES AT ME AND THE LITTLE ONES AND GO ON YOUR MERRY WAY BECAUSE IF YOU DO COME AT ME AGAIN WITH YOUR RELIGIOUS CRAP I SHALL LITERALLY DEFICATE ON THE BIBLE IN YOUR BAG EVEN IF IT'S SO CHEAP IT"S NOT WORTH THE TOILET PAPER IT'S WASTING NOR THE OXYGEN FROM ALL THE FALLEN TREES USED TO MAKE THESE WORKS OF FICTION! GOOD NIGHT! MAY THE SATANIC POWERS OF SCIENCE SAVE YOUR LIFE ONE DAY AND SAVE YOU FROM YOUR DELUSIONS!"
Lmao I'm beginning to think my neighbour is bad at juggling bowling balls
Also Voltaire, you one of my artistic heroes! Please don't stop doing what you rock at.
Aint done it again since he did this...
Hello from Hellas!Keep up the good work. This song is awesome.
I don't even want to imagine the level of annoyance that led to this song's writing
I do love that you post full albums online for free listening. Thank you.
Voltaire is the best! I luv all Voltaire songs
I'm reminded of this song every time my upstair's neighrbors decide 6am is a great time to lift weights and drop them on the floor. It's almost daily. :(
Finally! a video with lyrics for this song! And you're on an uploading roll today, aren't you Voltaire?
I love that beginning. Hell, this whole thing is great.
You made my day with just that one sentence.
Voltaire is the best part of DragonCon
Love this song.
Why your songs in the game aqw
Do you have the game or are just fans
What is the album that you like from your Albums
One of my favourite songs off my favourite album by you :D
I bought the iTunes version and hard copy of this album, because I got impatient waiting for the CD :3
I do get some funny looks when I'm singing along to it though. I think people think I'm mad at some kind of Deity or something rather than an actual man upstairs. o.O
Masterpiece.
I can understand that; one of my favorite musicians and musical influences talked about how he doesn't really play any music 'cause after he's done with a show with all the music and loud crowds going on, the last thing he wants to do is play a song afterwards.
I'm curious, are you using an Upright Bass in this song?
Yeah, i thought so to, and it makes sense at first glance. but on closer examination to the lyrics it fits bad neighbors better.
This was the first song I heard by you, really glad I put it on my ipod!
This is my favorite song from this album
Please tell me who the violin/ viola in the song is.. I must know, such a very complicated and fast rhythm.. o_0
say what instrument is that in the beginning? it's so creepy it's awesome!
their are 666 likes on this vid.... i don't want to like it and ruin how perfect it is
Voltaire, I've been a fan for 2 years and am a musician myself. Your music is amazing, and you are a huge influence of mine. I was curious if you mind if I arrange orchestrate this song. I really like it and would like the chord progression. Keep up the good job.
I love this song. I dunno why i just love it.
I remember another version (Heavy Drama) where can I find it? Was awesome.
I love all your song Voltaire Continue your awesome music =D
Love that chorus :) A nice thing to blast in your apartment when the guy upstairs is being a dick and not letting you sleep :)
Anyone know where to find the original version of this?? I haven't heard it in like 10 yrs!
This is the original version
+Fenix I heard one version years ago where the violin is a bit different and the solo is not a violin but I believe a female vocalist. Know what I'm talking about?
Myke D No, but this song is composed by Voltaire and published in 1998, so maybe the version you're talking about is a cover? in any case I haven't heard of it until now, so I can't help...
Sorry :(
I do. you can only find it on the demo tape. I still have it and have most of it digitized, but I do not have his permission to share it.
You want this : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cave_Canem_Demos
Gotta love the way he says ''Virgin Mary''.
OHMYGOD ZOE.
YOU GOT TOP COMMENT ON A VOLTAIRE SONG.
OH MY GOD ZOE.
UwU
I love this song, although the version I'm used to is the Heavy Drama Mix, on Unquiet Grave Volume 3
I know this song's totally literal, but it's fun reading fan theories in the comments.
I thank you kind sir. It's a character from a game I'm quite fond of.
I'm downloading from your first album and work my way down Lord Voltaire. *.*
Love it.
This song perfectly describes the last rent i was at. Old lady always opening the door to check whoever walks in/out, Sirian illegal refugees, a junkey, next door neighboors always moving furniture and drilling holes in the walls and at night partying til like 4-5am.
Being incredibly angry and sleep deprived at 1:55AM brought me here.
I can't believe someone actually memorized that. Bravo sir.
One can only dream... But for now, I gotta say, nice profile pic. Looks epic.
Quick qeustion: What album of yours, you think is best?
Oh my gosh,Such a slew of thought from a song...Its amazing that this is the reason 8n your life,Its the inspiration. It brings feeling to your mind...MENTAL FRUSTRATION ...AS JACKYL SAID...MENTAL MASTURBATION,i think its time i USE MY *****
are you making a new album, cause i listened to everything
I'm curious now, what was the inspiration then?
I’ve listened to this song so long I have become the man upstairs. I live in an attic and do weird shit all night.
So is the song purely just about your neighbors, or are you using them as metaphors for The Devil and God, Heaven and Hell? It sounds like it to me, but I'd like to find out straight from the Master.
pls, we need an instrumental version
Pretty sure my upstairs neighbor juggles bowling balls too. What a coincidence.
It's uncanny how this song almost completely describes my neighbour who lives near me....I hope I live near you
What kínd of music would you call this genius?
Nice beat.....
Haha this past weekend I went on a trip with my girlfriend, and she's pretty religious, and several of your agnostic songs came on (Dead, God Thinks, this). Halfway through this she said "How often does Voltaire say Allah's name?"
Uh oh, Voltaire's using caps. Your in trouble now! >.>
You're*
Best album -Zylum
Is there a clean version of this song?
You win the internet.
No, not a Goddess per se, but she's big enough of a character in the story and sort of a motherfigure to the main character, so some fans do it anyways. :)
~ TDG
Indeed, you got a good one yourself good sir.
And relates so well to my housemate upstairs ¬¬
DUDE!!! I have told you before.. I AM NOT TOUCHING YOUR JUNK!!
I identify with this song so much. Our upstairs neighbor is crazy and vacuums his room all the time to keep the voices away.
I will once I get the chance then... Good luck in your future philosophy.
Just wondering, is this a parody of Pink's, "Please don't leave me"?
This came outttt wwaaay before Pink 1996 release ...Pink wasntv3ven on the radio yet.
