    I've got several of these rods. Of the five or so that I've bought the last few years I've only broken one during the hookset on a large bass. I used the butt portion to make a repair on it lol. I use them mostly for smaller fish like pan fish trout and bass. I don't think they'd hold up to bigger salt water fish.
    I really like them for their portability. I keep a couple in my vehicle with a waist back of tackle to stop and fish whenever I want. They are pretty decent for that. They are not great rods in and of themselves, but the portability aspect is nice.
    Thanks for the great vid!

    Wow just seeing this out of the box th-cam.com/users/postUgkxQr1yd4Zc6qJF-scTB6Zb9dQbVpviuRxB recommend I have yet to fish with this set up, but based on the first hands on appeal, I can tell this is going to change the way i pack and carry to a whole new level. If you fish like i do, you know the smaller and less stuff the better. I’ve added a photo of just some of my gear so you can see how serious i am about fishing.

    I have a 9 feet and a 6 feet one from the same company. I love it with the sougayilang colored braided thread and it is soooooo smooth! I have only pier fished so far but I am not disappointed. Only issue for me is packing it up since I keep my line connected at the top.

    I bought this rod off Amazon as well and I took it to Rhode Island in my suitcase and it held up well through the flight and in Rhode Island I landed a Black Sea bass, a flounder and a ton or porgy and the rod held up great

    Got one myself. LOVE IT. I live on the west coast in the SF Bay Area. I've caught perch and small shark from the beach, and have even caught dungeness using snares. I've got it paired w/ a Penn Fierce 6000. Great inexpensive combo, perfect to keep in the trunk for any impromptu fishing trips.

      Def better for bait fishing than throwing top water...BUT I was amazed to land a medium sized rockfish on a swimbait (w/ a 1/2 oz jighead), rather high off some rocks last weekend. @ishwithfish has a pretty extensive review and handy mods to make the rod even better. Going to perform surgery and mod my BLACKHAWK soon w/ those tips. Keep up the great vids!

    i have 2 of these, and have customized one of them. The bottom eye is a bit big for the reel line wrapping, so after following ish with fish's review, i cut off the bottom eye and added rod wraps to the handle and added counter weight inside of the rod by removing the bottom cap and inserting egg weights. It is now balanced and works awesome! it is also sold under the kastking blackhawk name.

    I own two of those telescopic rods and I find they are not sensitive to feel the fish eating my bait. Yes indeed it is not a lure or top-water rod, slow action and rigid. I think they are more suitable for catching carp or catfish with baits.

  • @gelsingerjustin
    @gelsingerjustin 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I LOVE me telescopic rod. It's just about the only rod I use. I have a 2 seater car, so it's perfect to put in a back back. My telescopic is not floppy at all. It's so firm, it makes every fish feel huge. The best part of a telescopic rod is it allows you to go fishing even when you aren't planning on it because the rod stays in my car 24/7.

    I carry a light action telescoping glass rod that works well for 1/16 - 1/4oz. lures for most freshwater fishing when I can't bring a regular rod. Works okay with jerk baits but it's best with chuck and wind tackle.

    I grew up in Italy, lived there for over 20 years, and only used and owned telescopic fish rods, they are so easy to transport, you can get them ready the night before and put the hook on one of the rings and put it in your bag ready to fish without having to go thru the mounting everything before fishing.
    The rod being more sensitive and softer i think works better to me.

    While I was stationed in Japan, telescopic rods are primarily what is used over there. I loved them because they collapsed to such a convenient size. The major issue I had with them was after so much use and not enough maintenance cleaning some segments would get stuck and I ended up breaking multiple rods of various sizes just trying to force it to slide down again.

      Angel Of Noxus I remember people fishing with those on the pier in Okinawa. For some striped fish with tiny balls of some mystery bait. We were told to keep our interaction with the locals to an absolute minimum, so I didn't ask😎

    I had a Shakespeare 6.5ft. graphite backpack rod that I used for years and caught hundreds of fish on, up to 15lbs. It had really good action for a telerod and a decent reel. Unfortunately the tip broke when it was tossed while extended and I have yet to be able to find another one. I was active duty military and it was perfect on my travels around the world.

    We used them a lot in Germany when I was a kid. Very portable and long enough for a good hook set at a distance with light line, shy bite floats and natural(bread, nightcrawlers, maggots)baits. We never used these for casting with lures. Some people there use the bigger multi purpose ones for bottom fishing tho.

    Push n pull gently each section of rod by slightly twisting to secure tightly or loosening it. Never ever flip the section out forcedly. You'll damage the rings.
    Good carbon rod is strong enough to take a hard fighting 6 kg snakehead which fought stronger than pike.
    I owned 22 Tele rods of different lengths. Only 4 were damaged.Just bought 3 new ones, last week( upgrade). I got 32 rods in my room !

    Not sure about that model but the last 2 of 3 collapsible rods I bought were snapped on medium + drag by larger Spanish.
    They are super wobbly and bad with lures, and pulling fish up on piers (Rip number 3).
    That being said I enjoyed them on the kayak and with sibiki rigs/bait fishing. The length makes for long casts. Also fun if you want to catch small reef fish on light packing vacation but bested by modified children's rod reel combos. I like having one in the arsenal but if you want to blow 20 dollars on a rod that you won't need after a week just go to Walmart while on vacation and give the rod to a homeless person before you fly home.

    Just got back from fishing with my telescopic rod. I am on holidays at Port Douglas which is in North Queensland Australia. After fighting what i thought was a shark or ray for over 2 hours i caught a 70kg sea turtle of all things. I have the 7'6" option and had it out the past couple of weekends. The shorter rod seems to handle lures pretty well. I also did the Ish with Fish(youtuber if you haven't heard of him) modification. Makes casting feel much better without that weird front metal decoration. Although I only have a Penn Battle ll 2000 on it and bank fish for freshwater stuff. I really like the travel size of it.

  • @ozgurbozkurt5945
    @ozgurbozkurt5945 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I bought it from eBay - different lengths - for much less than amazon. The shorter ones (1.8 to 2.1 meter) are good for crank bait, lures, spoons etc. Longer ones (2.4, 2.7, 3.0 meter) are good for surf fishing with bait. They are very flexible! That flex adds more distance when you cast the line. However the same flex causes problems when you use plastic lures. Like you said, you don't have a lot of control over how the lure should swim.
    For portability and cost reasons I like them I keep a cheapo 2.4m one coupled with another cheapo shimano spinning reel. I caught a lot of jacks, blues, pompano in Florida. They have been holding up well :)

    • @HeySkipper
      @HeySkipper  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ozgur Bozkurt very interesting sounds like the same experience I had. The lures didn't work so well on the long flexible rods. Thanks for the report👍

    I thought i'd just add my 2 cents. Telescopic Japanese ISO rods. My best guess is telescopic rods like the one you have are modelled after them.
    These ISO rods, a high quality one is in the range of thousands of dollars. They are extremely light and the tip of the rod is literally 2-3mm thick.
    The idea of the rod is to be used for float fishing. Due to the lightness and tapered tip, the rod has extremely high sensitivity to bites and feels. Normally, those rods are 5m in length for rock fishing and are used to have maximum control of the fish when they try to reef you on the rocks. You wouldn't normally leave it in a rod holder. You could also look into Lever Brake Spinning Reels which are used to combo those rods. Fascinating style of fishing as you would expect the japanese invented this style. It is like finesse fishing.

    being I'm a fly fisher I'd be comfortable with a 9' rod. I bought a telescopic to use my Deeper Fish Finder. It's the size of a bobber for those not familiar. I can stick this on my sling bag find the fish and then rock out the fly rod!

  • @JollyPeanut
    @JollyPeanut 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    when lure fishing i tie on a small strong snap-swivel then i can switch out lures in a couple of seconds also there's less twist in your line & you do not loose lures through bad knots...

  • @carthiz
    @carthiz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I bought an even cheaper version, similar brand name. $6 for the rod, $8 for the reel. Reel is a size 50 Spinning reel. I have it spooled with heavy braid and use it for catfishing in a fast river. It casts pretty decent, even with 65# braid, and throws 2-4oz weight quite well. I have not caught anything on it that really tests its strength, so cannot speak to that. But hey, for $14 total it is pretty hard to complain!

    My first rod was a telescopic chinese rod, it worked like once and then the reel broke, but even the rod itself was falling apart, the metal collar that the eyelets were secured to just detached from their rod piece when it collapsed so you had to spend a few minutes after extending the rod, just making sure everything was in place. I caught a little red snapper on it, but not much else comes to mind, it wasn't the best first fishing experience. Wouldn't personally recommend a telescopic rod, not from my own experience at least.

    I bought a re-branded Goture telescopic rod from Walmart and it's seems to be pretty good for $17.00. The rod has a REAL carbon fiber blank and although the guides where they attach to the blank don't seem that sturdy, it's nothing that a little epoxy should be able to fix from the Dollarstore. The quality of Chinese stuff is way better than the stuff China had on the market 20 years ago. Most carbon fiber rod blanks (as well as almost everything you buy these days) comes from China anyway....

    Should have tried a slugo, for top water as well. I don't know where your fishing in New England but would be interested in fishing with you.

    Don't know what this dude's talking about not having top-water control with lures, works just fine for me, almost as stiff as my 2-piece Shakespeare rod. Maybe it's cause he has the 9-ft rod? I got the 7-ft rod and it works perfect for almost any kind of fishing imo. I put this rod in my backpack, and during my 4-hour break during college, I head out fishing on the St. Clair river in Michigan. Catch plenty of decent sized bass and catfish no problem. This guy's either being real picky, or his rod is too long.

    I know this video's kinda old now, but the sense I get is that the whole telescopic thing is great - IF you have a different mindset of how to cast/set/retrieve your lures. If you assume it'll be equivalent to all the rods you've used in the past, you'll be disappointed.

    I had one of those from Amazon for a trip to Pensacola we came back from last week. I think it was 11'. I tried top water lures while surf fishing with the kids. Got some bluefish and ladyfish. After a day some of the guides came loose from the rod segments. The next day I was going to bait fish with it beyond the sand bars. I cast out and the largest rod segment shattered and made a really load cracking noise. I wouldn't get rods from this manufacturer again I don't think. Great videos by the way. Keep them coming.

      I always had bad luck with Chinese telescoping rod and reel combos. Something always breaks or is loose. Telescoping cane poles on the other hand seem to be ok. I had two 20 footers and a 13 footer for many years now and no problems despite heavy usage. I only broke the tip of my old 16ft pole against a tree limb setting the hook on a fish in the Everglades. I guess they're dependable because the Chinese(and even North Koreans with their chronic supply problems)use these a lot themselves?

    In my country those rod cost less than $10 usd after exchange, its good to catch small to mid size fish, the biggest fish i catch on this kind of rod weighings 3kg my rod snap snap though on my last fish that weight 5kg it is portable but it surely not recommended for big fish

  • @TheOreotube

    I actually have one of these, and for the purpose (lightweight, portable travel rod) and price, it's not bad.
    First, while I don't have it, the 9.4' seems way too big, which may account for some of the shakiness you're feeling. I have the shorter 6.89' (with a smaller 3000 reel), and while still a hollow lightweight rod that can't compare to higher end models, I think this is a better choice.
    Also, not sure what line you're using (you have 20 lbs fluorocarbon and 30 lbs braid in the links), but I think a lighter braid (8-12 lbs or less) is a better choice for this combo, which would give you better control and action.
    That said, I generally agree it's better for bait than lures, although I've used some light bucktails (1 oz or less) and other small lures with good effect. Your plug seemed pretty big and not tying it correctly isn't the rod's fault. (Practice some good Palomar knots, which are quick and secure, for tying lures!)
    While not high end, I've found the 13+1 ball bearing reel to be effective and smooth for freshwater and inshore saltwater.
    A hollow telescoping blank has it's limitations, but so far its held up under some pretty heavy use, with some solid fish. Where it gets cheap, and could be improved, is the handle, which is only below the reel, not above it where I hold the rod) and one of the guides came loose (Superglue), which is understandable because the guides can't be attached like traditional guides on a telescoping rod.
    While not primary gear, for the purpose, as a travel rod, it's not bad. Very convenient in my kayak, in the trunk, on the trail or a suitcase. For a more solid, 4- piece 6'6" rod, the Okuma VS-605-20 Voyager Spinning Travel Kit ($45.52) or the Daiwa Executive Spin/Fly Travel Pack Combo ($129.95) are better choices for more traditional medium action rods.
    Not junk (I gave it 3 Stars on Amazon), but you're not going to get gold for $40.
