Hey Phoebe, I find your videos great. I can learn a lot how human behavior can affect software's algorithms. Just to add: there was this time in youtube around 2015 when its algorithm kind of altered - it revealed unheard of music like Japanese Citypop, meditation, indie music. It didn't 'tailor' to my taste at that time yet it just 'pushed' things that are dissimilar yet close to what I like. I can't seem to find this with spotify. It's just too 'obvious' that Spotify could recommend this 'tune' or 'artist'. It's not like youtube back then when it recommended dissimilar yet likeable music.
Thanks for another great video! In my experience so far, the suggestions made by Spotify have usually been very good, though sometimes it goes in circles, probably when I stay in the same theme for too long. Music-Map is another way to search for similar music.
I personally experience none of the magic of spotify stated in this video. I have to try really hard to find something new, and even harder to find something I like.
0:10 this has never been true for me, I have used Spotify for 8 years and the playlists have NEVER been good so I don’t think it’s a universal thing of being good for everyone
True, same here. 1 out of maybe 30 recommendations is solid. I guess Spotify might be tailored to recommend music to the most average people / widest range of people. Depending on your music taste it might be very difficult to have something "good" recommended.
I had the same opinion in the first months of using the service. But now that is not my experience at all. When you build your own playlists and interact with their feedback input, their generated playlists get really interesting. I have landed on some really nice and esoteric music this way.
Loving this channel btw. But... I feel like this actually explains pretty well what I don't like about Spotify lol. I naturally prefer to take a way more active role in the music I listen to, and always hated listening to the radio back when people still did that. When I've tried, the algorithm never really seems to "get" me... always the same songs, always pretty high energy, and it will definitely never decide to play a whole album for me, which is usually what I really prefer to do anyway. So... probably why I'm way happier using Apple Music. I find it easiest to ignore all the algorithm driven stuff I don't care about and just treat it like a record store on my phone.
so basically the current recommendations are based on 2 algorithms. 1st one is the personalized recommendation, which is based on your listening pattern and history. and the 2nd one which you just mentioned is based on collaborative algo, which just finds out the similar users who have the same listening pattern as you. And then they give you the recommendation mix of both. TH-cam has the best algo for these.
Interesting. I have just been very confused by the "smart shuffle" feature, which also "shuffles in" songs outside of my "liked" playlist. I was unaware of it and it made me angry that Spotify seemed to randomly play songs that I did not want it to play. Somehow these "smart" algorithms make me feel less in control over my listening experience and I wish there was a way to get back a truly random shuffle without any "smartness" in between, since my listening habits often do not match what those algorithms presume. It’s not that I don’t want to use them at all, but I’d like more options and control over randomness.
Hi there! I've just come across the channel and watched a couple of your videos. Very high quality production and great well though-out content. Do you edit your videos yourself? Do you have any professional video editing experience? You are a great presenter, the camera quality is excellent, I really appreciate the clips of videos and scroll-through of articles. It's great to cite your sources seamlessly throughout the video. It seems many other commenters agree. I expect your channel will find quick success.
Spotify works well only for simplistic music that just needs to excite you for a short period of time. But if you create more stable complex tastes for music, it absolutely stinks. I like certain type of piano or expressive running music, but spotify doesn't get it. A great video, love the quality information and engaging storytelling.
I feel it used to work at first but nowadays it just plays the same music. It rarely plays music that’s in the playlist that I rarely listen especially on shuffle. The algorithm is awful rn, TH-cam Music does a better job of balancing what you like, what you used to like and what’s new.
I know this is different for everyone, but often Spotify just chooses the wrong songs for me. About a month ago I used a script to actually shuffle a playlist. It was amazing, I am hearing songs that I haven’t heard in a long while. So I kind of actually got annoyed of Spotify thinking it knows me. I got tired of listening to music, because it felt like I kept hearing the same songs and it seems like I was.
Definitely not true for me. Spotify suggests me same songs over, over and over gain. The suggestions are so trash, that i have to skip 20-30 songs to find something, that could be listened at least for 1 min.
I like reading these comments it seems to show that people that are like each other are LOCKED in but people like me who aren't tuned in don't really get it now I'm wondering what kind of ads you show to spotify tuned people and which ones affect them more
Recently Spotify started driving me crazy exactly because of this behavior :) If you are picky music listener and you really deliberately expand music you listen too, Spotify is really really bad. It gives you music similar to what you listen to, but just worse usually, which lacks those unique aspects that you enjoy it for. Let's say I'm listening to the whole album of artist I enjoy. When it ends, Spotify tries to find music in similar genre so you continue listening, and usually it's same few songs in the same order every time, over and over again. If you listen to unpopular music and it spans between many genres, it just gives you something similar but more popular, and this does doesn't translate into better quality. And it it keeps playing, each next song becomes further and further from what you listened to. And now, you were listening to your favorite artist, but instead you listen to something that you are not interested in and you might even dislike. And instead of making you to not click, it leads to opposite - you are forced every now and then take your phone or whatever and manually put up list of songs to listen to, which drives you crazy 🙂
And about discovery of new music, it's actually true that it's bad. You'll never find talented but unpopular artists with it, which nowadays is dominant. Anyone can create music at home and many people get very good at it, but you'll never see them on Spotify because they have few thousand listeners at max. I'm pretty sure it happened that you stumbled across some amazing artists and then realized that no one listens to them on Spotify :) Good ways to find such artists is just to go through social networks of artists you like and see their peers, or Wikipedia pages for more popular artists. You can see their influences there, or who they influenced, or who they collaborated with. Also, there are services like Bandcamp where it's easier to find something fresh, and you can pay artists for their work directly. If you purchase one album from them, they will get more then they would get from thousands of listeners on Spotify. With all that, I feel like Spotify just destroys creativity in both listeners and artists, so more and more I'm thinking to move on and find an alternative
Maybe Spotify can read my mind but it chooses songs, I don't want to hear. And it repeats the same songs all over again. I HATE the shuffle system so much!
Hey Phoebe!! Great content! I too am a tech enthusiast from India ( taking design gigs from side)lol .In case you are in need of any editing/thumbnail design services, just know that i am here. Would also love to share my portfolio with you:)
Just realized how fucked up this app is. So many reasons to quit, with them allowing AI-generated music and barely paying the musicians. Hate how commodified our online presence has become. Great video otherwise!

No, they're not. I have to do 20 skips before the right song
But great video, well done!
I know right, it just ends up repeating the same songs for me everytime
that, or it repeats the same artist. lately i keep getting taylor swift on shuffle every 1-2 songs even though my playlist is over 2000 songs 🧐
Last time I talked about Spotify with my friend, we were wondering why the algorithm sucked so much...
Thanks for sharing! Yah, sometimes it do be like that

Spotify UI has barely changed since inception, I don’t know wtf their designers do
It does what it should do in my opinion. What do you suggest they change and why?
