I appreciate your sense of humor. Keep making vids girl. And yeah, you cant force your brain to get it. It just takes the time it takes. Everyone is different
I'm learning a not-dead-but-not-widely-spoken-anymore language, it's so so hard to find anything that is genuinely fun to listen to or read that isn't behind a paywall 😭
I personally found that listening to media that I’ve already seen is really fun for me. Watching SpongeBob in french and I enjoy it. It may not be for everyone though
Disney sucks as a company but get disney+ they have every language on there in all regions. If you're learning something popular liken French or Spanish its not really necessary but for obscure but relatively known languages (thai, Swahili, norwegian etc) disney is perfect. If it's too obscure like Mongolian or Malaysian or something it won't be there though. Its nice because you can watch cartoons. Good for beginner and intermediate
Thanks for this. I also enjoy the Inner French podcast and like you I'm also using Grammaire Progressive although you appear to be at at higher level than I am. I'm working on B1. For me Assimil's French with Ease has been a great way to practice listening, reading and also has provided a good amount of grammar instruction.
😂 All the best!
Some vey good book recommendations, I recently book a couple of Roald Dahl books in French and loved Les Deux Gredins (The Twits) as it was favourite as a kid.
I know this wasn't the point of the video but that spider analogy really got me thinking. I have struggled with awkawardness because of social anxiety for my whole life and for some reason this analogy comforts me and makes it easier to look at it throught a logical objective perspective.
That’s really great to hear that the analogy resonated. I was worried other people might not get what I mean by it. But I know it helps me feel less anxious in social situations -regardless of language being spoken!
Try to remember how you learned your first language as a child... did you put in any effort? did you study grammar? I guess not, I didn't. Learning anything the wrong way is always hard. Lean languages via the natural approach is not that difficult. And dont' be afraid of making mistakes, it is part of learning. Also, there is a difference between language learning and language aquisition. Aquisition is done subconsciously (you could listen to french dialogues, audiobooks, subliminal programs while you sleep. Or lsitem to them run during the day, it helps. And the most important part, have fun.
But when you are little, there's nothing in your brain at all. I felt like chinese (my native language) and english (what I use daily) have occupied my brain and it's just hard to pay attention to the background french sound at all (seems like my brain is not intaking anything)... I'm not sure we can learn the way the kids learn.
I work with children who are learning to speak and read English and they ABSOLUTELY have to put in effort. It takes hard work and dedication for children to learn how to speak and learn the grammar of their native language.
I'm going to be honest. This isn't good advice. For one, children have absolutely nothing else to worry about but learn. As adults, we have so many other obligations in life. It is also expected for us to speak fluently. For children, it isn't. Secondly, listening to dialogues and audiobooks while you sleep will do nothing but ruin your sleep. People don't be fooled by the "Learn French While You Sleep" Gimmicks. It does not work nor wil it ever
I have French family but live in the US and never grew up speaking French my parents didn't speak to me in French either. I went to France for 6 months last year and did some online American school while I was there but wasn't in a French school. I lived there so I would look around search up how to say it in French and make a list study that. I would listen and talk ofc I had to. I would study the verb conjugations and learn verbs and words that I didn't know when I heard them. Now I can speak to people in French although my writing is the worst part since I didn't care about that I don't know how to write basic conjugational differences. French isn't crazy hard it's just work. You can learn French you just gotta look at a list and remember so say it out loud and think about it during your day. I speak not formally at all, but I can't really speak too formal even if I wanted since I copied how people talk. Practice every aspect writing, speaking, vocabulary formal and not formal. French sentence structure didn't make any sense I would make fun of feminine and masculine The words were hard to say because I was relating it to English forget about English when you are learning French. With time everything gets easier and makes so much more sense its crazy keep working even when it doesn't make sense.
I love your honesty and down to earth approach to the topic. Plus I like the use of snake oil sales men phrase! SOoo true! You are right to the "no frills" approach for me is better. I'm doing everything I can to master this language. I find being a roller coaster of doubt and road blocks malheureusement😢 mais, je crois en moi! Thank you again I am going to subscribe, I really resignate with your honesty

You’re so right about immersion. It’s so hard to find things to listen to that’s interesting to you.
try with music.
