maynard has such a laid back and almost weak talking voice. when he sings it's like he brings his whole being to another plane of existence and his voice becomes a force that could slice through time and space.
Maynard james keenan is definitely someone i really look up to, this person is awsome, his philosophy of the world is so special, yet so true and i recognise myself in what he says, he was raised in hard conditions but still made his best to make his life help people like me and you.
I love his attitude..I love what he writes about..what he talks about and I love that we have his music to listen to.Most people have no clue how genius his lyrics even are. Tool and A Perfect Circle are 2 bands I can't live without
I love what Maynard says about people selling their head. I've loved Tool for years, I truly enjoy their music. I never knew what they looked like (not until now), and I never had any desire to, honestly. Because it should never be about that in the music industry. I just love the sounds that they produce.
I was at the concert in 01 with pertect circle and nine inch nails I collapsed he jumped off stage and handed me to his help he is an amazing person and an amazing musican
Yeah all of those bands you said. Every band member are my best friends as I know them personally and I cherish them and I cherish our friendship. Braaap!
Oh man, I remember watching this interview on TV. It was either in the 90's or early 2000's. Cant remember, but i know the best interviews are always done in Toronto :)
thank god for that man he took all that is bad about the music industry and shyed away from it completely i love the idea of selling music not image it is missing in pop but also metal, country, and all music
I agree with most everything you said with one exception. Tool does not tour that often. In the US they usually do one major tour for each album. They might have another tour a year later or so but when each album is 5 years apart, when Tool come to your town you see them simply because you have no idea when they are coming back.
4:50, fuck yea mjk, thats why your music never gets old or played out. absolute integrity in the band and more importantly, the music we all hear from it.
maynard is one of those rare, super-witty people that can just do whatever the fuck they want and still be cool. always knows the right thing to say. Every interview with him is funny because they always pair him up with an airhead and it's like einstein explaining physics to a dog. No one's on his level.
I don't think I've ever heard anyone accuse them of "selling out", ever. I honestly don't think anyone out there could say that and keep a straight face. It would be like saying Rush sold out... You just can't combine those words in the same sentence.
Obviously it would've been their ORIGINAL fans that saw them live, and bought their first EP. Obviously you and I can't relate to that, but it happens to a lot of bands. Green Day were not welcome where they were from in the Oakland area after they signed with Reprise for example. It's the nature of the beast, everything is a product begging for your fatass dirty dollar.
@eyeammi Your right that is the entire point of tool's music. It's not what they want to say because it's personal and unique for them. It's what you feel and how you think the music is a part of you.
All music is open for interpretation, that's what makes it so beautiful. I can get one message from any Tool song but you may get a different message. You can't fully understand Tool unless you do D.M.T and astrally project!
a perfect circle and tool music is just about evolution. those ares some of the stages which maynard and other artists pass through. it's amazing i guess. i particularly love a perfect circle first album "mer de noms", but i think that tool's music is great too... i love that. the constant changes and activity of artists, the experimentation. if one doesn't like APC i think it's ok, i don't like all the tool's album either
They are all DROP D tunning. And alot of their choruses are just 3rd fret and 5th fret chords. But I still think they're pretty different from each other. Plus they change time signatures a lot.
The universe is still an awesome fantastical miraculous mosaic of course, but come on lets be real. What goal are we really working towards? We are working towards greater consciousness and enlightenment, but we're REALLY just working to preserve ourselves, to continue existing.
We would not be here if it were not for a goal. We would not exist if there were no reason, just the same a reason wouldn't "exist" for no reason. Reproduction is merely a way for us to continue on forward.
***** No, there is probably no "reason" to exist, the greatest quote I've ever heard uttered in this respect is: "The universe doesn't owe us any meaning" - that should be humbling, it should make you appreciate your own life and make you find your own meaning, but at the same time, it doesn't mean there is one, or that there is some goal. I can appreciate my existence but simultaneously, I understand that it is in all likelihood, without any purpose but the one I make for it.
To say that the universe doesn't owe us any meaning is to imply that the "universe" is the creator of meaning and that it dishes out meaning and lack there of to its creations. Not only that but it is "you" who is making the judgment of whether or not we should have meaning, not the "universe". And by the way your entire argument is an attempt to manipulate an emotional response in place of a valid or compelling argument.
yeaaaahh....I am pretty sure all of the thoughts MOST people have had in their lifetime hafe been thought TWICE by Maynard....along with an infinite number of other ones. I am beginning to understand his complex character, and the thoughts he shares with few people on Earth.
I am sure that he is aware of his position in TooL and or his identity in real life but I know this much, "OMG U Maynard!!!" is the first thing u spit out, if he doesnt know that then well my friend you have gained a lifelong admirer who will make you copies of keys to all of his houses, studios etc cuz u a genius who's mind he will want to probe for information that will not be forgotten. I would treat him like what he is to me - a stranger. I fucking borderline worship the music he makes but
Oh it’s about the money too, their attitude is, Tool makes no compromise when it comes to the writing of their music. So when it is finally completed you better know that you will be paying top dollar to see Tool or any of Maynard’s bands in concert.
This is a great interview. I really appreciate how good the interviewer is, that she actually knows what the fuck is going on. There are so few good interviews with Tool or with any of the constituent members, in part because most interviewers are stupid, uninformed, or not paying attention.
this is actually a really great interview, she asks interesting/insightful questions, good job Sook-Yin Lee
Sook a what?
He has a thing for Asian women
Yes I'm Takeoff Can't Stop Me Now I don’t blame him
She's an artist so that helps
She’s one of the 3 Libras
I also appreciate that he listed Soundgarden instantly.
maynard has such a laid back and almost weak talking voice. when he sings it's like he brings his whole being to another plane of existence and his voice becomes a force that could slice through time and space.
Nothing like a bit of Maynard on the morning
"Is it comforting for you to know there is a bigger picture?"
"No it actually makes it more confusing"
Holy shit that's right
bigger than....... huh
Bullshit stacked on bullshit, MayNERD has the insight of a brown stain on my underware.
alienpyramid if you’ve paid attention to literally any Tool songs lyricism you’d realize how wrong you are
Ross Trbojevic he’s wrong
Maynard james keenan is definitely someone i really look up to, this person is awsome, his philosophy of the world is so special, yet so true and i recognise myself in what he says, he was raised in hard conditions but still made his best to make his life help people like me and you.
It's going to be a tragic day in history when this man passes away
He’s 57 now….
Stop talking about that
I love his attitude..I love what he writes about..what he talks about and I love that we have his music to listen to.Most people have no clue how genius his lyrics even are. Tool and A Perfect Circle are 2 bands I can't live without
this is one of the few interviews were he respects the interviewer
I loved this lady and all of her interviews - If your'e reading this, i love you!
you are right. im thankful to find an interview with maynard. there are so few
I must agree. This was one of the more enlightening interviews i've seen with Tool. Good job interviewer.
been looking for this interview for a long time. thank you.
".. And-uh, Nirvana" Hahahah Maynard ❤️
She always knows how to get on their good side.. she's interviewed some big names
This probably the best interviewer that made Maynard feel comfortable..
Watch the ones he does with Joe Rogan.
Theres an interview called the best interview ever with Maynard. It was deffinetly one of the best, he told his whole frickin life story
I could sit down and listen to this man all day.
Never saw this interview before. Great one.
I love what Maynard says about people selling their head. I've loved Tool for years, I truly enjoy their music. I never knew what they looked like (not until now), and I never had any desire to, honestly. Because it should never be about that in the music industry. I just love the sounds that they produce.
maynard is such a fucking badass
I was at the concert in 01 with pertect circle and nine inch nails I collapsed he jumped off stage and handed me to his help he is an amazing person and an amazing musican
that's cool
Yeah all of those bands you said. Every band member are my best friends as I know them personally and I cherish them and I cherish our friendship.
Braaap!
Tool is great, they're one of the few examples of music where the band actually works together and creates an astounding piece of music.
One of the better interviews ive ever seen with Maynard. She asked intelligent questions, and Maynard actually answered them intelligently.
Oh man, I remember watching this interview on TV. It was either in the 90's or early 2000's. Cant remember, but i know the best interviews are always done in Toronto :)
That was the single greatest interview I've seen with Maynard yet. FINALLY SOME INTELLIGENT QUESTIONS. Read Deepak Chopra 'SynchroDestiny'
"It actually makes everything more confusing" best quote ever.
beefcakepantiehoes out of context it means nothing
Lol yeahhh
yeah, that part made me laugh out loud.
@@sanctuary8873 out of context everything means nothing
He can be whatever he wants it to and thats the true value of one artist as Mynard... hes brilliant in what he does and writes about! ...

Judith is such a great song
Lacy Prinzo Marry me
Wow, he told you how he writes his songs! That was a awesome interview.
Excellent Interview!!! About the Only one I have seen!
Wow I'm glad all you guys have deep insight and understanding into what Maynard James Keenan is all about. How about you guys interview him next time?
Fuck he is the man, love Tool since I was young and then watched them at Big Day Out 2011 in Auckland and now I can't get enough of them
This is such a deep and good interview
It's amazing he's so honest (or so it seems). He also doesn't attack people in his talking. That's admirable for being someone in his position.
I love how he can be completely serious and deep in those glasses and everyone takes him seriously.
I agree with most everything you said with one exception. Tool does not tour that often. In the US they usually do one major tour for each album. They might have another tour a year later or so but when each album is 5 years apart, when Tool come to your town you see them simply because you have no idea when they are coming back.
"it actually makes it more confusing"
what a quick, deep answer
4:50, fuck yea mjk, thats why your music never gets old or played out. absolute integrity in the band and more importantly, the music we all hear from it.
his music makes me glad to live in AZ; one his vineyard is only 2 hours away, and soon Arizona will have a bay :P
Picturing Maynard at home drinking wine and baking cookies Hahaha
i love listening to him talk. i think he seriously makes poeple more intelligent just by speaking haha
So I'm a new listener of Tool. The Fear Inoculum album got me hooked on these guys. Can anyone tell me the song that's playing around 0:36?
That is a cover of Led Zepplins "No quarter"
Ironically even they borrowed from those who borrowed.
cool they showed no quarter in there....one of there best songs even though its a cover
This was a good interview. The girl didn't interrupt him. You can see he was polite also because of that and the questions were really good.
I LOVE MAYNARD JAMES KEENAN
maynard is one of those rare, super-witty people that can just do whatever the fuck they want and still be cool. always knows the right thing to say.
Every interview with him is funny because they always pair him up with an airhead and it's like einstein explaining physics to a dog. No one's on his level.
this must have been in the year 2000.
When I'm back at my house bakin cookies. I lol at that part everytime.
cool interview, maynards awesome
Holy Shit!
An intelligent interviewer...
I think it's a first for rock music! ;,)
13 year old comment😳
I was at that Toronto show. I think it's the smallest venue they have ever played in Ontario.
I don't think I've ever heard anyone accuse them of "selling out", ever. I honestly don't think anyone out there could say that and keep a straight face. It would be like saying Rush sold out... You just can't combine those words in the same sentence.

He's such a bizarre person, but a damn fine musician.
The rest of us are bizarre Maynard is the normal one
destroyermaker you’re so right

not only is he a genius, but he just turned those elton john glasses into maynard keenan glasses

I love when he jokes with interviewers, he never laughes at his own jokes it seems
i love he mentions soundgarden nin smashing pumpkins r.a.t.m. and nirvana some of my favorites
@Darkassassin505
it is a cover of Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter". and yes, you can hear it on Salival.
"i feel pretty insane most of the time" that's great
@eyeammi Your right that is the entire point of tool's music. It's not what they want to say because it's personal and unique for them. It's what you feel and how you think the music is a part of you.
He's got it all figured out! His methods for song wrighting are second to none!
Didnt know he start perfect circle, kinda makes since.. they have a similiar sound
Here I am 12 years later like wtf? Lol
All music is open for interpretation, that's what makes it so beautiful. I can get one message from any Tool song but you may get a different message. You can't fully understand Tool unless you do D.M.T and astrally project!

No True Scotsman.
lol really ?? I thought he was a native

What abouy Lipan conjuring? I remember in an interview he said he was getting back to his roots with this song.

In regards to his thoughts on time, for years I seemed to look at the clock when it gets to 2.22 pm

"Speak softly and carry a big stick." -Teddy Roosevelt. lol
maynard is a true rockstar, fucking sweet interview.. lateral for life...
what's the name of the song that plays at 0:31? i never heard that one before

What song is playing here 0:32 and at 7:12 ?
it's the same song, its their cover of no quarter
