Alnwick Castle is actually pronounced "Annick"

These are just the castles in England. There are loads more in Scotland and Wales
There are castles along the boarder of England and Wales built by the Normans to subue Wales.

A lot of castles originated from the Norman desire to say "We are here, and here we stay". I'm from Medway and have been to Rochester many times. All these castles used to have a purpose - Rochester protected the Medway crossing, a major route into London from the continent and I wouldn't be suprised if there was a Roman fort there at some time.
Bodiam Castle is an example of a late castle that is meant to look like a castle.
A Knight returned from a war with a lot of money, bought some land, and built a castle.
The flooded moat around it is on a slope, and so is easily drained and would not defend if really attacked, and the layout is mostly rooms in the towers with corridors in the walls.
It's been called 'an old soldier's dream home'.
It's not a serious place to rule from or fight at, but an expensive home in the style of a castle.
Often used in film and TV, it's well worth visiting.
You're right with everything you said of course, but let's not kill the magic eh mate? It is certainly defendable, but castles in Kent stopped being built to that criteria about 50 years previously. Its a lovely place to visit and some nice boozers nearby, you've got the River Rother there. Hot summers day it's lovely.
I live round the corner from Warwick Castle...if you every do visit 5 mins in a car from Warwick you got Kenilworth Castle, and the remains of Cauldon castle...lots to see round this way.
As well as the castles there are the magnificent stately homes.
That's a pretty good list. Other castles of note include Bamburgh castle in Northumberland, near the border with Scotland. Northumberland is often overlooked but it has some magnificent scenery and attractions. There's Hadrian's Wall (built by the Romans) and the holy island of Lindisfarne which is accessible via a causeway at low tide. If you want to see a fairytale castle look at Neuschwanstein, in Germany. The castle was built by Ludwig II of Bavaria. It's featured in the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Hi Kayla, you are in luck as the UK is so small in comparison to the USA so they are not very far from each other by your standards.
All of these castles are in England which is only one of the 4 countries of the UK The other 3 countries have their own jewels when it comes to castles.
. If you visit London (which is the usual starting point for most visitors) the Fortress, Tower of London is awesome, it is disappointing this video did not do it justice.
Windsor is 27 miles from the Tower and takes just over an hour.
Warwick is about 100 miles from the Tower and takes about 2 hours (according to google)
Keep the videos coming as you are a breath of fresh air to watch, making me appreciate my own country more.

Arundel Castle in West Sussex, south England is about 5 miles from me. It stands overlooking the River Arun that was once an important route for shipping goods to and from the port at Littlehampton on the coast. It is the home of the Duke of Norfolk, one of the most important aristocrats in the country. You might fined it interesting to take a look at his role in the recent coronation of King Charles. Arundel has been used as a set in several films including 'The Madness of King George' and more recently 'Wonder Woman'. A couple of miles further upriver is Amberley Castle which is also close to the river and is now a Hotel. Within less than 10 mile are the remains of two more castles, Bramber Castle on the River Adur near Shoreham by Sea, and Knepp Castle near Horsham. Little more than part of the central Keep remains of Knepp.
Of course we all have are favorites but was nice to see my county Kent had three castles mentioned. Warwick and Windsor are both ones I would highly recommend but my favorite is probably one not mentioned Arundel. Truly majestic and dominates the skyline from its hill top position for miles around
... And, don't forget to say "Warwick" Castle is pronounced 'Warrick' the second 'w' is silent.
Kayla watching you video again, i saw you suprised by the tower of london being a zoo, the reason for this, was when people visit, from other countries they brought animals as gifts from there countries, elephants monkey's and the like, well back in years gon by, one of the monkeys bit a child, so they moved the animals out of the tower of london and created the London Zoo

yes we go to castles all the time, you can stay at some which are hotels, we used to be able to go in windsor castle free, but whenit got burnt down, they started to charge,
Highly recommend Warwick (you don't pronounce the 2nd 'w') Castle. Especially in summer when they have all sorts of events going on.

I like Arundel castle even though much of it was rebuilt in the 18th & 19 century. Standing on the battlements, you can see for miles around which I suppose is one of the purposes of a castle. Arundel castle has exhibitions of of life in the early renaissance period put on by the Raven Tor company.
Warwick castle though is for my money, the best castle in England.
I live close to Leeds Castle and Dover Castle also Rochester Castle......I'd love to show you around..

I live in East Sussex in Brighton in the uk 🇬🇧 and I’ve visited Arundel castle many times and It’s really beautiful. Definitely worth visiting if you ever get the opportunity.

My great grandmother lived right near the castle Church Lodge 7 St Albans Street. She was a live in housekeeper there. Since the 1920s til she died in the 70s

I used to live near Ludlow in Shropshire and wae had 3 castles within 20mins aill in diffrent states Ludlw Castle is huge they were all part of everyday life.
That would be a dream to see everyday🤩
We have things a lot older than castles. Tale a look at West Kennet Long Barrow or Wayland's Smithy.
Or Maes Howe. When the name stops making sense, it's an older language than we know. ;-)

Thanks for posting Miss Burlin (are you Kayla?!), very enjoyable and great to hear and see the gasps of amazement, we don't get that over here as you can drive for under an hour and theres two more castles, including some Roman Fortifications 2 thousand years old, and hill forts dating to one thousand BC - not to mention stone henges 6 thousand years old (older than some of the Egyptian pyramids?).

@@Kayla.burlin Hi Kayla, some of the sites of the later castles started out as fortified "Burghs". In the later 900s the Anglo-Saxon king Aethelred commanded these places to be fortified against Danish incursions. The City of Exeter was walled in stone in 973, in fact it was a Roman City and first walled in 250 so the walls were simply repaired and made good by Aethelred. The Rougemont gate there was built in 973 and it still stands to this day. There is Anglo-Saxon walling at the ruined Corfe Castle some 40 miles away and we have another ruined castle just a mile up the road, its banks and ditches are on a vast scale and still quite impenetrable! It started out in pre Roman days as a hill fort around two and a half thousand years ago and was simply reinforced by the Normans around 1070. Another massive Iron Age hill fort is Maiden Castle and the Romans laid siege to it for 4 days before finally taking it, the commander was the famous Vespasian (he was Roman emperor from 69 to 79AD).
As a Englishman I have to say that we have some great castles but my personal favourite is Dover Castle which is massive and is situated on acres of land. It also has a huge tunnel below that was used as a command centre for the Royal Navy, and was pivotal for the evacuation of British and French soldiers at Dunkirk in France, well over 300,000 men were rescued and brought back to England by Royal Navy ships and a fleet of civilian boats, ferries and other civilian vessels. It is known as the miracle of Dunkirk and Dover Castle WW2 Royal Navy centre known as HELL FIRE CORNER is known for its part that it played in that rescue, you have a fantastic view of France on a nice day when you walk out on to a gantry that is built into the White Cliffs of Dover. I recommend Hell Fire Corner which is also very haunted. 💂♂️💂♂️💂♂️💂♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🏴
My Grandfather was a naval officer tasked with the rescue he was 21 yrs old and L.Commander he survived and went on to serve in Burma / Japanese conflict and was present in the Japanese surrender ..I used to live with him in his Pub he would wake me at 05:30a.m to work and bottle up/clean , I was 9 years old ...then school ...at 11p.m..I would clean/wash up glasses/restock....then to bed...I slept like a log !
Some British castles are lumps with grass on them, some are actually country houses built in 1908.
Some date to the Iron Age, with many stone circles, rounds, and henges dating to the stone age.
The earth mounds constructed in North America in prehistory were mostly deliberately destroyed in the 19th and 20th centuries. It's a shame.

You said it correct the first time before you corrected yourself - Alnwick is pronounced Al-nick and Warwick is Worick. Usually a 'W' in the middle of an English name is silent 👍
its not alnwick castle as he mentioned, we call it in my part of the world as annick, we dont pronounce the l or w

I have just started watching so not yet sure which castles it will talk about _but_ if it mentions "Alnwick" Castle - as it is spelt, please note, it's actually pronounced as 'Annick' Castle. Yep, a _lot_ of British - including English - place-names are _NOT oronounced as they are spelt. Yes, it said "Alnwick" but remember - it's _actually_ _pronounced_ '_Annick_ ' Castle!! 9 out of 10 of the castles I`ve seen here in England are wrecks. I remember being just around the corner from the Tower of London and couldn`t be bothered to spare a few minutes to see it. It`s still there - and I don`t care.
But, fair play, when you`re driving through the English countryside or small forests in Wales it`s nice to see an intact castle with it`s towers above the canopy in the woods. They ( though rare ) look as if they were built yesterday. Arundel Castle, not far from Chichester is, perhaps, the castle most would think of upon hearing the word. It`s to look upon Camelot. But Windsor - I`ve seen it from the window of a plane various times upon coming back in to London. `Can`t remember if I have ever been to Windsor or Warwick Castles. As likely as not I have. `Been more or less everywhere else in this country.
Even now there has to be worse places to be in the world than here.
I could imagine them being deteriorated, since it's been 100's and 100's of years. I bet even some of the deteriorated ones look pretty cool tho 😁
Alnwick is pronounced Annick. And Warwick is pronounced Worrick. I know, we're an odd bunch.
Ps, after other ruins, if it wasn`t for King Henry VIII the country would still have far more intact Abbey`s and Monasteries than it has. He destroyed those buildings in order to reward his supporters with fine mansions and large estates. Therefore, on eis more likely to run into a fine Manor, Mansion, Castle than one is to an intact Monastery or Abbey. All Parish Churches here in England were once Catholic Parish Churches. Upon the English Reformation they were `commandered` by the new Protestants.
Still - these are lands worth seeing.
