My favourite of his jokes was about the nun standing outside a pub trying to persuade someone going in that alcohol was wicked. The drinker says “You can’t criticise if you’ve never had it. If you have a drink and still think it’s wicked, I’ll stop.” The nun agrees but refuses to go in and tells him he’ll have to bring it out to her and asks that he puts it in a mug so other people can’t see her drinking alcohol. The man goes inside the pub and says to the barman “A Guinness for me and a gin and tonic please. Oh, and can you put the gin in a mug, please?” The barman sighs. “Oh no. Is that f***ing nun outside cadging drinks again?”

David Allen was Irish and his humour was not allowed by the authorities in Ireland at the time - when the Catholic Church was very influential. He moved to England and had a very successful career on British TV, where his humour wasn't a problem. If you want to see more humour around religion watch the Life of Brian by Monty Python. I wasn't brought up in the church or in a religious family and I have immense respect for people who questioned it. I don't know what I would have been convinced of. Dave Allen, one complex comedian, he's very well dressed, he gives off an allure of refinement. Then he blows you away with hilarity, with a wise mans knowledge of the way the so called civilised world works. From the standpoint of a man watching on, a child looking up, or a drunk falling down. Just Brilliant.
Dave Allens jokes about religion came at a time when many people questioned religion. to me religion is how you act out to others, not sitting in church demonstrating what a good christian you are. I had a customer, who was jewish and I visited him on a Saturday. The minute he opened his door realised what a terrible mistake I had made visiting him on his sabbath. I apologised profusely, he said "dont worry John my church is my home" Pointing to the Synagogue he added "unlike those hypocrites" "Come in you are welcome"
My grandmother needed to drop something off to the priest, on a Saturday, and sent me running up to hand it to him at his door at the rectory. He was off duty, so to speak, and he was wearing a tank top, needed to shave, was smoking a cigarette, and drinking a beer. For some reason, I never believed in religion after that. I couldn't help thinking of that priest pounding beers and smoking on his day off, just like the rest of us. It just made it seem like a show after that.
If you're told to fear something then that something doesn't love you, indeed, it's a controlling sadistic entity. But this is what religions do to ensnare people, they use fear to control.
I agree there's an old joke it go's....KNOCK KNOCK....who's there....JESUS....what do you want.... I WANT YOU TO LET ME IN......why ...SO I CAN SAVE YOU....save me from what.?....FROM WHAT I'LL DO TO YOU IF YOU DON'T LET ME IN. Religion 101.
I was in a catholic children's home from the age of 3 to 16 run by The Sister's Of Mercy and I loved them and the home every single day and would do it all again and yes we were taught the faith ( Catechism and more ) but we watched dave Allen and it made the sisters laugh Ohhhh yes and this brings back happy memories of my childhood and I have so many stories and imitated them and the fathers for years and we all had a good laugh ! . Happy days .
You might be interested in a video made by Stephen Fry on the difference between British comedy and American comedy. It's interesting and for the most part very true.
I loved Dave Allen I am eighty years old and I still remember the fear at night thinking of my sole and how many black spots were on my sole. L left the church at fifteen knowing the damage the church had done to me. I remember saying to a nun where is the love of god .
I remember watching this when it was broadcast on the TV Dave Allen was a big favourite of my parents. First time I ever saw someone with a finger missing, and first time I saw someone on TV drinking alcohol. The show was a mix of Stand up, as we saw here but also short sketches. He had a great way of picking out the absolute minimum of a situation right back to the most basic facts allowing the audience to see just how ridiculous we can all be.
Watching Dave Allen when I was growing up, may well have contributed to my scepticism about religion. Proper education is teaching you how to think. Not what to think. Anyway, another a Brit you might find amusing is Peter Kay. His “misheard lyrics” sketch would be a good starting point.
I saw Dave Allen in realtime as I was born in the 1950s. He was intelligent, very brave to take on the religious and political establishment. Being southern Irish you don't know how dangerous this was. There was a war going on in Northern Ireland when this was filmed about amongst other these subjects.I respect him as an Irish but also british commedian. His timing was perfection. Brave man. Now if you want Modern English humour Jimmy Car or Sara Millican, I suspect you can't handle it.
There are not enough superlatives to describe just how good Dave Allen was 🙏🏻🇮🇪
Correct, and into the hole he's gone poor sod

Atheism is not a religion,it's a personal relationship with REALITY
If you haven't already reacted to it, Ricky Gervais on Noah's Ark, is hilarious
One of the funniest men ever
So happy that you guys enjoy this. The father, son and oily goat.
In Europe we are generally more open minded. I'm not scared to admit that I'm an athiest. I'm proud of it.
Do remember him from childhood. My parents devout Catholics and we all found him hilarious!!😂😂
I apologised profusely,
he said "dont worry John my church is my home" Pointing to the Synagogue he added "unlike those hypocrites" "Come in you are welcome"
Exactly why we need to put an end to these cults!
One year on and these comments are still relevant!
Please do "Teaching how to tell the time", A Dave Allen classic!
The guy who got me in to stand up when I was a kid! Legend!
Rest In Everlasting Peace Dave Allen comedy genius 🌟💯🇮🇪🤍🙏🕊️
DAVE ALLEN WAS DYNAMITE
LEGEND
I grew up watching Dave Allen. This is just like when I was a kid
I remember watching this when it was broadcast on the TV
Dave Allen was a big favourite of my parents.
British classic comedy; try The Two Ronnies and Morecambe & Wise
Oh! The clarity of a four year old. In the name of the Father, the Son, and into the Hole he goes. Amen.
You guys are good. Love from Ireland 🇮🇪
The legend 🙌
So funny. We have brilliant comedians. Love American comedy, comedians too.
