      Hi Tony, electrics are my least favourite bit of working on vehicles, I find all of it a struggle, but I got there in the end and all of it has been working well for over a year now. Thanks for watching!

    Hi, Jon again, just watched the first half of your new vid, and can help with some more info. 30amp breakers were used at the battery on some years, and some had a ‘fusible’ wire inserted between the battery and the starter relay (which then feeds the ignition switch). Most have been replaced with a breaker, as a burnt out section of wire doesn’t help at the side of the road!
    If the ign sw is connected correctly, and has the jumper wires between some contacts, the ign breaker feed is the 10 o clock terminal, and the lights are at 11 o clock and should only be live in the second switch position. Yellow wire goes to the breaker, green wire from the breaker goes to the rear terminal board then rear lamp, blue wire from breaker to front terminal board, blue from terminal board to h/bar switch, yellow and white from switch, hi and low.
    Believe it or not, the scotchlocks are original AMF, the main loom runs from the front terminal board to a smaller board behind the coil mount, with the dash ‘spliced in’ along its route (complete with some unexpected colour changes). Front terminal board is genius and has different groupings of terminals so the two h/bar looms, the main loom and other bits all connect at the one place (even the horn and both the flasher relays goes in the nacelle, all connected to the board).
    Great old things to work on aren’t they
    Cheers

      More really helpful information, thanks Jon. Looking at its position and the way it is wired in, I suspect a previous owner dumped the fusible link and bunged in a breaker.

    Good day I am the proud owner of a 1968 flh but Can't get spark any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks kindly Bob from Barrington R.I.

      Hi Bob. This Shovel is my first Harley so all I can offer is general basic stuff. Are you getting 12 volt at the coil, same again at the points. Are the points switching that 12 v or are they grounded. No voltage at either, check the switch, one but not the other then check the wiring to the component. If they both have 12v then check coil resistance, if that is ok, leads and plugs. If all of that checks out then you should have sparks. Sorry I cannot be more specific. Thanks for watching!

    How can I wire up my coil to get power and spark

    • @oldnutsgarage
      @oldnutsgarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      12 volt supply, ignition switch controlled to + side of coil, lead from points to negative side

      @@oldnutsgarage ok but I have two wires coming from my points to my coil to the top and bottom that's it do I leave it like that and add a wire to one of them and up to the switch

    • @oldnutsgarage
      @oldnutsgarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Max, there should only be one wire from the points to the coil and then only attaching to one end of the coil not both.

      Yeah, it is not easy diagnosing a problem at a distance.
