I suspect that the threaded insert that came with that socket was more intended to aid in holding that socket/seal driver parallel with the shaft while driving the seal than it was for protecting the threads at the end.

Enjoy your videos and watching you solve problems along the way - typical day in the shop. Your comment on "getting to old to do this" is something I think about when struggling through a job. But when it goes well, the work keeps us young.

You are so right Ron, you only feel it when things are not going well and even when it isn't it is still better to be in the garage getting oily !

Right the seal official source say you put it in the right way ….. but you have spark off a great debate between me and my ex coworker(best mate still) (between us over 45 years as Harley tech register with blaa blaa blaaa ) we are rebuilding an 84 evo motor at the moment so it quite relevant but unofficial it doesn’t matter but I think you made the right call but I have to say you made a valid point last week as there is only about 25 and a splash oz of oil in a primary (bike upright filling through the derby cover to the outer lip of the clutch basket)
Love the rectifier mount idea … extra heat sink can’t be bad
Keep up the good work enjoying the content…. Hope I don’t come across as too much of a know it all …. as you have me revisiting my sumping problem to see if I can fix it looking in my case I’m look at a new oil pump … but I’ll let you know

Micheal I am grateful for all the information you have given me, it has helped give me the confidence to keep going despite my lack of experience with Harleys. It is also great to get feedback about the seal orientation from someone used to working on these bikes day in and out and that my theory was not completely mad ! Let me know about your oil pump as I will have to get round to sorting mine out soon.

@@oldnutsgarage with regard to the crank oil seal , my 71 has an oil feed to the primary chain from the pump and a scavenge back to the oil tank , therefore IMO I think the crank seal should be fitted with the recess towards the crank, I feel this will prevent excessive oil being forcred into the primary and causing leakage. As you I am new to shovels but it just seems right.. I also have the same issue with my Stator.

Somehow this is a faulty design as I understand it. It can't be completely sealed because there is no seal or O-ring between the spacer and the mainshaft. Shouldn't you use Siliokn between the spacer and the shaft to prevent oil from traveling between them? Spacers rotate with gear shafts. By the way, I really enjoy your videos and admire your patience.

I think you are right, it is a design issue, with many suggested ways to help reduce the flow as you mentioned. I went with a pretty simple repair and it seems to have worked, the bike would leak a small amount pretty much every couple of days before the job, but even after the winter lay up there was nothing on the floor, so I am happy. How long it will stay that way is another matter. Glad you enjoyed the videos and thanks for watching!

Rewatching your series on the shovel tranny leaking oil because I am facing the same leaking on mine.
Now 1 year on, how is your repair holding up? Any suggestions for me before I tackle this project?

Hi Terry, have a look at the recent video Wakey Wakey and you will see the shovel had not dropped any oil over the winter lay up, before the repair it was leaking a small puddle every few days, so I am pretty happy. It was my first time stripping a Shovel primary / fitting new seals and the thing I would recommend is take it slow and careful, I did. Good fun though!

i'm no expert but wouldn't a Wet clutch slip?

I am not an expert either, but all versions are at the very least “damp” and running the primary wet rather than misted is a well tested option over some years. Having said that I will find out and report back if it does not work. Thanks for watching.
