  • While using my computer to check the mixture of the carbs I started to encounter issues on the way home. It seemed the engine would only stay running if the RPM's remained high. Once home testing could begin. After letting the battery charge, I was surprised to see that the tester showed the system to be in good working order. However as we will come to find that over a short amount of time things started to change quickly. While I have a good feeling as to whats wrong let see how had it is and how quickly it gets there. Furthermore, we will still conduct testing of all components as necessary just to be sure.

That soft rubber they pour over the circuit board tends to break down over time. If yours is begining to show cracks and not severe, and of course IF everything still works as it should... you can wipe it down with some 90% alcohol mixture and give it a once over with liquid rubber. I use that Performix Liquid Tape 4oz with the brush applicator... works like a charm. So flip yours over and have look-see, you never know.

Any time I do a charging system on a pre 2000 Harley, I change the reg and the stator at the same time, anytime I try to change only 1 component, I usually have to change the other one within a month anyway.

I had similar symptoms, ended up being the breaker, oxidation all inside the breaker when I opened it up..

Another interesting possibility. 40 year old breakers could also use a replacement or at least be ohmed out

Hey buddy! I’m redoing a 81’ FXS and would love to know where you sourced your braided brake lines
