  • Buying the nicest wood on Amazon. I bought 60 lb of Kiln dried, highly figured, exotic tropical woods online (about 15 board feet). This pack is a assortment of unfinished pieced and a variety of species. This is great wood for small crafts and boxes,. Here are a few of the woods I recived; Costa Rican Mahogany, Mango, granadillo, cocobolo rosewood, teak,spanish, cedar,goncalo, alves,monkeypod and mango. Amazing wood for a woodworker!

    Hi. I have watched a handful of your videos and was moved to comment. I read somewhere (About section?) that you only started woodworking in Nov of 2022? You have gained a great deal of knowledge in a short span of time! You have a well equipped shop with some great tools (DeWalt planer, Microjig Gripper to name two). You built two dedicated table saw sleds. You have learned and demonstrate lots of useful tips and workshop safety. In short, I have been at this hobby/pasttime/passion for over 40 years and I'm very impressed. You are quite a talented woodworker. Best wishes and stay safe in the shop.

    I built a white oak bank. I used an old brass post office box door for it. The coin slot was outlined with a border of purple heart. I've used zebra wood to make a base for a whales tooth I scrimshawed. The tooth has some vertical growth gum lines in it I aligned them with the zebra wood. I finished the zebra wood by polishing it and using Carnuba wax.

    Say's Spanish Cedar. Cedars are usually a soft wood ideal for carving. If you are ever in Australia in the near future i can cut you some very nice Australian hard woods. Red Iron Bark, white mahogany, Australian bloodwood, tallowwood, applegum, greygum. spotted gum.I cut wood very week.🌲

      Truly is wonderful wood for the price. I got the 25lb and the 35 lb from them. Honestly the 35 lb is not worth the price (I think) but the 25 lb package is fantastic every time

    Nice haul. I have unique old speakers with cabinets of solid teak that was overlaid with split bamboo finished with nitro-cellulose lacquer that aged to a warm glow. Monkeypod carvings and curios are also an interest of mine.

    The lighter coloured layer in timber is the cambium cell layer, which is the growing part of the trunk. It annually produces new bark and new wood in response to hormones that pass down through the phloem with food from the leaves. This is also known as sapwood which is undesirable in construction timber. Cheers

    • @woodworkingwithSkyler
      @woodworkingwithSkyler  ปีที่แล้ว

      I didnt know that. I been looking for the sapwood because of the variation in color. Didnt know was inferior wood. I assume is probably ok for small boxes?

    • @AquaMarine1000
      @AquaMarine1000 ปีที่แล้ว

      @woodworkingwithSkyler The balsa wood we know as kids for making model planes is the cambium layer of the balsa tree. The heartwood of the tree is much harder than the outer growing layer. This layer is easily separated from the heartwood straight after felling. Balsa is plantation grown in different tropical parts for this outer layer. Due to cost, Paulownia's fast growing is replacing balsa. Cheers from Australia. PS. We have some wonderful native timbers. In the past, our hardwood have been exported to the US and Britian for marine structures, eg., San Dirgo and London docks.

      Sapwood is usually deemed inferior because it does not have the rich color and figure of heart wood, however, you can still make some very nice boxes with it, depending on how it is incorporated into the project.

    Be very careful with the dust of these exotic woods , particularly the cocobolo. They can really mess up your lungs and lead to future sensitivity. You’ll really like the scent of the teak and Spanish cedar. Bocote is usually from Mexico and a nice warm tobacco colour but oily/greasy. Many of these exotics are oily.

    Excelente apresentação das madeiras exoticas, a maior parte delas não conheço, aqui na nossa cidade no centro oeste do Brasil tem algumas árvores de mogno de mudas e sementes trazidas da região norte, tenho troncos e galhos de mogno uns dois metros cubicos aproveitado na retirada de uma arvore em uma escola, o Gonçalo Alves é nativo aqui, ótimo trabalho, parabéns.

    Thanks for this. I learned something new today as I had no idea one could order exotic woods from Amazon suppliers. Could you suggest ways other than a planer to remove the writing from the wood? I do not have a planer. Also, I clicked on the affiliate link for your supplier.

      That's what I was seeing. A lot of sapwood and weak figured pieces. They would be good for small projects; boxes, wooden planes, handles, etc.

    Mango wood is a wood with beautiful grain orientation BUT! Very prone to pests, very frustrating compare to other type of woods.

      The 25lb box on Amazon is about $50 The shipping ia about $50 as well. The box I got was two orders they shipped together. 25 lb and 35lb. The 35lb is $150 because it included some rare pieces. In my honest opinion, the 35lb its not worth it thats why I didnt put a link in the description for it, The 25lb box had amazing pieces in it and is worth every penny

    • @patprop74
      @patprop74 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@woodworkingwithSkyler I would have to agree with you, the cost of the wood itself is a good deal but add the cost of shipping to it and it becomes unreasonable, Hopefully, you will get your money's worth by making this video and future videos using it which I have no doubt it will be the case. there are some nice woods but Mohogany is pretty common and an inexpensive " exotic" wood, and so is all the Cedar they sent, Not because cedar came from overseas means it is much nicer than domestic red and white cedar here in North America. looking forward to seeing you hehe and what you come up with in future projects. BTW my edited comment was not meant negative in any way at all lol you are an attractive woman so why not showcase it along with your work right :P
