Each one of his hand tools alone is more expensive than my table saw lol
Really interesting hinge. Beautiful piece all the way around.
Retired mechanical contractor for 31 years learning woodworking @ 77 for retirement and mental health. Your work is so impressive. Thank you for sharing this build and I'll subscribe just to see what I have no idea how to do but learn a little along the way.
Thanks for the kind words 😀, I’m pleased you found it enjoyable, I hope the woodworking is going well 👍
You give me inspiration @maxhurst8904, I've just turned 71 and I too am a recovering mechanicl engineer. MY dad was an amazing wood worker, me...if I looked at a piece of wook, it would warp! I've always wanted to learn woodworking, it's great to know I can still take it up when I finally retire.
The tray insert would have been nice in mango wood.
Maybe a mango knob as well with a mango tray. Still beautiful though.
That would be cool! 👍
Love that hinge detail ! Very thought provoking thank you
You’re very welcome, I’m pleased you liked it 😀
Looks lovely
Beautiful! You totally surprised me with some of the things you did - cutting the box into two for example. With my zilch knowledge of woodworking I get surprised by a lot of techniques! The finished box is absolutely wonderful - great piston drop. Thank you for a fascinating video.
Thank you, so pleased you liked it 😀
Love the hinge, and that wrap-around grain.
thanks 😀
Love it. The hinge is the best part
thanks, glad you liked it 😀
absolutely beautiful and roy Williams what a great day in the shop
so pleased you enjoyed it 😀
Excellent craftsmanship. It was a good choice to use the relief in place of hardware.
Thank you very much! 😀
That is a lovely box.
And better still it’s shown me what I need to do for something of my own. Many Thanks.
Thanks 😀 Glad it was helpful
An excellent example of someone with skill and patience producing a precision piece. After more than 45 years of woodworking, I would be happy to call this piece my own.
The design is excellent. It looks very elegant on the outside with the wrap around grain. I’m always worried about the strength of the mitre joins and would normally fit keys into the corners - but that ruin the design; so, I think I would play safe (Mr. Over-engineer) and fit keys on the inside so that they don’t show on the outside.
I truly hope the piston fit insert stays that way. I made one and, with seasonal changes, it became a tray that wouldn’t come out!
I tend to line my jewellery boxes with a suede or pigskin after a professional jeweller told me that high carat gold items could get scratched after time in contact with the timber. How much of an issue? No idea but I line my boxes.
My only advice is: keep up the high quality work and high quality videos.
PS. I’m not fond of the music but, on my device, there is this thing called volume control. I find it works.
thanks for the kind words and some great suggestions, maybe I’ll try the next video with no music just the sounds of the workshop 👍
@@GM_Design I’m old and don’t like loud music any more. Maybe a lot of your audience do. As I said, I can just turn the volume down.
A great lesson in why wood selection is such an incredibly important part of the process of making loving things . . . good job. Nice work.
Thanks, pleased you enjoyed it 😀
Thanks!
thanks for the support 👍 You’re amazing 😀
love it!
thanks 😀
Nice job, love the hinge.
Thanks! 😀
That is a lovely box!
thanks 👍
I enjoyed the background music almost as much as the build.
thanks 😀
Not sure what I enjoyed more... the creation of beautiful art or the great music. Well Done !
Wow, thank you! 😀
And they are decorative.
Excelente trabajo, muy fino!!! Saludos
muchas gracias 😀
Gary first time here. This is outstanding work of the highest level. The end result is absolutely unstated elegance. Excellent.
thank you very much, I’m pleased you enjoyed it 😀
👍👍👍!!
I like using interesting grain patterns like that and wrapping them around corners. Also, that moment when you know you didn't glue it shut is always a relief. I use one solid rod all the way through my hinges after shipping one to Australia from the States and they blew the pins out of the hinge segments. Great build and I like the tray also.
thanks, I’m pleased you liked it 😀
Some of the hand held planers you used I've never seen before. And that hinge. Pretty awesome. This has to be some of the best craftsmanship I've ever seen. The music was nice too.
Thank you very much, so pleased you enjoyed it 😀
Just beautiful and as a furniture maker thanks for new ideas the finishers were beautiful.
Thank you so much! 😀
Ficou muito bom show de bola
Well done. It looks great!
Thank you! Cheers!
Muy interesante gracias por compartir saludos
my pleasure, glad you enjoyed it 😀
mi piace molto la cura per dettagli. Bravo
Grazie😀
Thanks for the woodworking and the music, as well.
Thanks glad you liked it 😀
Beautiful piece
Thank you! Cheers!
Great job, looks good!
Thank you! Cheers!
Excellent job. Excellent result 👌👏👍👍👍
thanks 😀
No more words... Just emotions...
Oh and I coincidentally just saw the ENCURTIS video on the 3-parts mix yesterday!
Thank you for this video and the beautiful box!
Thanks I’m glad you enjoyed it! 😀
Great job it turned out beautiful
Thank you! 😊
Cool thanks. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, will do!
Beautiful job, and nice soundtrack...
Thank you very much!
Really liked the wooden hinge, that was a very nice touch, very nice looking box.
Thanks 👍
well done, I really like the wooden hinge. going to have to try that one on my own project soon.
thanks I’m pleased you liked it 😀 Yes definitely give it a go 👍
All around beautiful job. Pretty much flawless as far as I can see. I’ve made a few box,s but have never seen the hinge design you used, very unique.
Super little jewelry box you can be proud of. Thanx
thank you so much 😀
add bevels and it would look 10x nicer, but still amazing box, and hinge is great trick !
Thanks, glad you liked it. The bevels could be nice, I might try it on a future box 👍
Beatiful work! Subscribed! I would prefer a knob instead of the finger groove, but of course it is a matter of personal preference! I sent you an email with a couple of questions. Thanks for your video, I appreciate the cadence and the texts below explaining the process! 👌
Thanks really pleased you liked it 😀
Just stumbled across your channel, subscribed 👍. Great job
Awesome, thank you!
That dowel hinge design is genius! Great work.
Thank you very much!
@@GM_DesignNice how easy it is to make, without complex measuring or set-ups. As long as you have the centering drill bit in the right size.
Incra makes a wooden hinge kit, but it relies on the Incra precision fence to dial in the clearance and the stops. I suppose you could make a jig instead, for the same router bits.
Great music. Nothing makes sanding easier than some Gary Moore..😁
You got that right! 👍
The finger dent felt like an afterthought in an otherwise well thought through project. Perhaps drilling half a hole in the same place would have worked better with the otherwise quite sharp design rather than the soft little indent?
thanks glad you liked it 😀 I like that idea, it could’ve worked well 👍
Thank you for sharing your journey with us. The music, the craftsmanship, the tools was quite impressive and with that said I decided to subscribe to your channel and journey ❤❤
Thank you very much! 😀
Apprezzo molto il modo in cui lavori con le pialle manuali. Sei veramente un artista.
Complimenti!
Grazie 😀
Beautiful, love the hand tools.
Thank you very much! 😀
👍👍👍
I enjoy watching you use "real" hand tools, mixed with modern equiwork.
Would love to see some glass panels in the top (working on a watch box myself).
Inspiring woirk.
thanks I’m pleased you enjoyed it 😀 I do want to make a watch box, hopefully I’ll get to that soon 👍
That box looks awesome! That hinge is a GREAT idea, love it! The only thing I think the “knob” should have been something else imo.
thanks glad you liked it 😀
If you had inlaid a thin piece of darker wood, like ebony , in the lid --above the finger dent, the contrast would make the dent almost disappear! - Over all, a very impressive project. Well Done!
thanks 😀 great idea with the inlay 👍
You are an artist. Keep up the beautiful work.
Thank you so much 😀
Great workmanship - on a sidenote, I enjoyed the background music.
Thanks 👍
Шикарная работа👍👍👍👍
thanks 👍
Only thing I can see as a possible issue is the mitered glue up corners may not hold up with edge grain glue. Splines are what I like. Makes me feel better anyway. Great job. Arborist Blair Glenn
(Also a TH-cam channel on trees)
thanks glad you liked it 😀
I’ve never had any issues but splines are a good option and can add a nice decorative edge. I like the idea of using brass splines which I’ll probably try at some point 👍
If you had cut the boards with a narrow handsaw instead of the table saw the grain would have been even less interrupted. Or you could have cut it with a router and a V-grove bit.
good suggestions 👍
nice, gonna have to hone my skills to make something this good
thanks glad you enjoyed it 😀
Men that is super nice congratulations I love it and your music on the background is amazing
Thank you very much! 👍
I really enjoy your methodology! Very nice work! I like the background music!!
Who is the guitarist? Please let me know!
Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks I’m pleased you enjoyed it 😀 I think the guitarist is Will Harrison 👍
Very nice work!
Its 'edgey' and it fits wondertully. Like the hinge!
But one little remark: the 'bevel' for a finger to open the lid you sanded smooth. Would have liked that to be edgey too, just to have a consistent look.
But nevertheless: great job!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Good idea about the bevel 👍
I came here to see this hinge, watched the whole video. awesome work dude!! subscribed
Thank you very much! 😀
Absolutely amazing craftsmanship. I loved the wooden dowels with wire for the hinge. Very nice. I was wondering if ya thought adding felt at the bottom of the inserts would take away from the beautiful wood grain.
thanks so pleased you enjoyed it, I did think about adding felt or maybe leather to the bottom of the box & tray but did want to keep the walnut showing on this one. 😀
💥💥💥👍👌😎
Goed banget 🎉🎉
realisation de tres grande qualité.niveau ebeniste voir plus.je pensais qu'il y aurait un systeme pour fermer devant
Merci beaucoup
Looks great. Nice to see a young man developing serious skills. Now figure out how to make the grain on the hinge exactly match the grain on the box 😁
No, I haven't got a clue!
thanks 😀 I’m working on another wooden hinge box now, I’ll see if I can make the hinge “disappear”…..highly unlikely 😂
Very nice, great hinge, nice wood, but doesn't the turpentine smell or does it go away.
thanks 😀
the smell fades quickly 👍
Nice work, and a lovely box. Just one tiny nitpick, aesthetically speaking. I liked the idea of a finger notch instead of a knob. But the rest of the box is all flat planes and relatively crisp corners.... In contrast, the notch looked a little 'soft' by the time you sanded it. Had it been me I'd have made it a little deeper, being careful not to let the rasp rock, and made sure to leave the edges of the notch defined.
Thanks I’m glad you liked it 😀, I can see what you’re saying about the finger notch 👍
Wow I didn’t know some of those tools existed
I know, I do have a thing for hand tools 😀
Ha! I'm with you! This was my first time on this channel, and I was fascinated by the jigged hand planes...amazing.
Excellent professional work of Art. I would have used shellac and later Bee wax. For inside and outside. What about an old fashioned Key for that valuable Box?
Thanks for the tips! 👍
Maybe hard to find somebody with valuable jewelry exceeding the value of your box.
you might have a point 😂
Great attention to detail! How do you like that Clifton hand plane? I use mostly Veritas.
thanks, glad you liked it 😀 I love my Clifton plane, I think it’s on par with my Lie Nielsen and a bit cheaper here in the UK 👍
Box looks great. Did the grain wrap all the way around or just on 3 sides? Love the Cosman hinge. Also like the music. Reminds me of another channel I like name Tokoly Woodwork. Plays similar music 👍
Thanks, glad you liked it 👍 unfortunately the walnut I had wasn’t thick enough to rip down to create the continuous grain
Perfect piece! Loved everything!
Just for curiosity, is there a reason why you applied oil + wax on the outside and only wax in the inside?
Thank you for sharing 😉
thanks really pleased you liked it 😀
the inside doesn’t need as much protection from UV and wear & tear etc 👍
Gorgeous. Two things... does the lemon curd (beeswax stuff) also smell of lemons? And also...the music sounds like a cross between Gary Moore and Peter Green and I loved it. Subscribed for quality woodworking with no faff and decent music! Good luck with your channel.
thanks so much, I’m pleased you enjoyed it 😀
No it doesn’t smell of lemons but does have a nice smell to it
Love the piston fit tray. What are your thoughts about expansion and contraction of wood. Will it bind? I wanted my next project to have a tray and I was worried that during the year it'd not be able to open. Love the box. New Subscriber!!
thanks really pleased you liked it 😀. I’m going to keep an eye on the tray to see if it does bind up over time, hopefully as it’ll only be small amount of movement, if any, there’ll be no issues but its definitely something to consider when making one. 👍
Would you please mention the source of your tools and supplies. Thanks
I shall try, was there anything specific you wanted to know about?
Nice job but I have to query the piston fit. I live in the tropics (Cairns, Australia) and when I make a sliding lid box I have to leave a few millimeters of clearance in the slots. If I make the lid a tight fit in dry weather then when the rains come the wood will swell and the lid will not even fit into the box. Have you experienced this problem with your trays ?
thanks, glad you liked it 😀 We don’t have the same humidity changes here as you do but I will be keeping an eye on it if/when we do get slightly more humid weather
Thank you for the great video! I love your work and your style!
To be 100% honest, the music is not my taste.
I love to listen to your comment as well.
Of cause I subscribed your channel.
So pleased you liked it & thanks for the sub 😀
That is a beautiful box! That piston fit box is really cool but I wonder how it’ll hold up to seasonal change? Keep it for yourself and examine every so often to see how holds up. Have you thought about narrating your videos? I’m still working out my style myself. Sad people watch and the only thing they say is something nothing to do with your work.
Thanks, yes I’ll be keeping an eye on it to see if there are any issues down the line. I have tried narrating a few times but I was never happy with it so always removed it. It’s definitely something I’d like to do, once I can get to the point where I’m happy with the end result 👍
Beautiful, I may have missed this in the sub-titles, what wood is the top made of?
thanks, I’m pleased you enjoyed it 😀 The top is Mango 👍
@@GM_Design thank you
nice job. thank you , for a share. What is the name of the device in the 3.10 rd minute of the video.

I vote no music at all. Totally unnecessary
There was no commentary. Turn the volume down.
You don't even wear jewelry.
No, but luckily it’s not for me 😀
I'm just messing around (: @@GM_Design
couldn t watch after 4 mn that music ruins everything its awful yuuuk
My latest video didn’t have any music, check it out and let me know what you think 👍
You background music is super annoying
sorry to hear that, what would you prefer different music or no music? All feedback is welcome
Your takeaway after watching this video was you were annoyed by the music??😂
I wouldn’t go as far as to say annoying but a tad too loud perhaps
Ever heard about the mute button or volume settings?
