- Official MOTHER icons are here for Nintendo Switch Online, but how did Nitnendo do with their sprite selections? These are all the characters I would keep, and all of the icons I'd cut to make room for others.

Also surprised you didn't mention Dr Andonuts. That feels like a glaring omission to me. He's a pretty major character in both earthbound and mother 3
I thought about switching the Phase Distorter for Dr. Andonuts! I decided that he's at least represented by his creations (the PD, Dungeon Man, the Ultimate Chimera, and...Jeff lol). I'm thinking about doing a seperate "what if" video for 60 more MOTHER icons, so he'll definitely be in that!
I'd swap bike Ness for *diagonal* bike Ness
That way we get his extremely happy face on better display :D

Yes thank you for reminding me of that! I should've brought it up in the video, that was so cool and unexpected back then. Mr. Saturn was a nice surprise but I never would've predicted Belch as an unlockable costume
Mad car is my absolute favourite icon from the 3 collections, I'm so glad I got him, and while ironically I am the least interested in the Mother 3 icons, I still got them, it's my favourite of the 3 games I needed to do it after it was patched safe to obtain
Yay! I'm happy I kept it then, I love the Mad & Psycho/Devil Cars too. I definitely had to snag the MOTHER 3 ones, I got them before it was safe 😆
Oh I dunno if I agree with cutting runaway dog. He feels pretty iconic to me. Especially being such an early encounter
The ramblin mushrooms are insanely iconic, you can’t even think about cutting these guys
To be honest, it was never really a question whether to keep him or not! I had the Ramblin' Evil Mushroom as my profile picture before the MOTHER 3 ones came out

I'd swap out your Giyas for Heavilly Armed Pokey, and the icons for Lucas and Kumatora should instead use the post-timeskip sprites. And I'd probably use flying Whatchamacallit instead of Barrier Trio, but other than that,your list is perfect.
Heavily Armed Pokey is a great choice, I'd be okay with that instead of Giygas (you couldn't really put Giygas on a differently colored background anyway, unless Nintendo maticulously edited out the extra black). I think I'd rather have the post-timeskip sprites of Lucas, Kumatora, and Claus too (Claus's would have to be from the TaneTane hallucination). I'm thinking about doing another video of "what if Nintendo put out 60 more MOTHER sprites" so I'll be sure to include your picks there!
I’m just glad I finally got a bat icon lol. I’ve been looking for one for a while on NSO, so having one to represent my love for MOTHER is a nice bonus!
Great video. Here are my personal choices:
Earthbound Beginnings is great. I liked your picks. My only suggestion is I think it'd be funny to give the crow its cigarette back, but I get that it's very unlikely.
Replace Foppy with Tessie. I know Tessie's only in the game for a little, but I just have a soft spot for 'em. Also (slightly biased) but I would love it to be my profile picture.
Might be a controversial choice, but I'd replace Ness on his bike with the Photographer. I just feel like Fuzzy Pickles is more iconic than the main character but on a bike.
Replace Giygas with the Diamond Dog. I think it'll be a good choice to not spoil the ending of Earthbound, while also being of significance to the game. Also, I think the sprite just looks better and is better suited to be a profile picture than the never-ending spiral of hellish doom that is Giygas.
Replace the Pigmask with the Absolutely Safe Capsule. Originally I was just gonna choose Mother 3 Porky, but I think it'd be funny to not show him himself but to just show the capsule instead, which makes sense considering his fate, similarly to how they did for the Mother 3 Smash Ultimate spirits.
But those are just my thoughts. Thanks for reading this mess of text!
I'd personally replace Ness bike riding with his mom instead, just for variety and especially if we're talking prominence, she's way more so than the bike
That's true. I'd be OK with this, Ness's mom does rule (I love her line "Yeah, sure, you're cool! Whatever..." 😆)
but I like the joke of the bike seeming to be super important, but it's such a useless item. I think it's a perfect troll icon.

I think another funny one would've been the bus when it's stopped and the driver's sticking his head out. I always loved that silly looking sprite

Unrelated to the video- I remember interacting with you on Twitter a few times during the night the icons dropped since you were a bit hesitant to get them due to everyone’s NSO glitching a bunch!
I certainly was! I ultimately decided to do it that night because I wanted to join the fans who made the sacrifice to get Nintendo to notice lol
I wasn't expecting a patch the very next day but I was relieved, and I'm glad it all played out this way because there must've been a lot of bug reports about people doing this just for M3 icons!
@@ThaneGaming it’s super funny. I was one of the first people to switch their region for their icons without thinking of the consequences. Ultimately, I’d been waiting so long for them to arrive I figured it was worth it as well. I was sooo worried about the rest of my NSO items but the next day patch was hysterical.
@@melophobia0504 thank you for diving in first and helping clear the path for everyone else who was able to get these icons! My hesitation came from potentially not being able to use any of the preexisting icons in my collection (I have a toooon of them lol), but I eventually said "why would I need anything but Negative Man as my pfp" and took the plunge 😆

I'm thinking about making more of those ridiculous icons for an April Fools video! Thank you, Worthless Protoplasm is a great choice (Poe, Mato's wife, used that as her EarthBound Central pfp)! The omission of the Masked Man is odd, I wonder if Nintendo is still wary after they accidentally used a fan edit of the sprite for Smash Ultimate?

My honest opinion is that it's quite hard to limit the characters and experiences of the mother series to just 60 icons. If I could, I would ADD more characters, not replace existing ones.
But if I were to replace some of your picks, I would:
• replace the magicant dragon with an "unsuccessful teleport" icon since the confused face of the sprite is amusing to me.
• replace giygas in M2 with Diamond Dog, or King.
• replace the sideways biking Ness sprite with his diagonal biking one, since i think it looks cuter.
• replace Kraken with Ego Orb. Because Yes.
• replace Mecha Drago with a simple baby drago.
• I'm torn on the decision of including both a masked man and a pigmask, i would like both of them to stay but, personally, i would have replaced the rope snake with an arrow lizard. Maybe I'm biased, since the arrow lizard used to be the icon on all my social media, but it's just as tiny and cute and memorable, and it's a good introduction to the magipsies and a decent representation of them as a whole.
I like those choices! I do agree that it's difficult to limit the MOTHER series to 60 icons, so in that sense I do think Nintendo did a good job. I only personally cut 10 afterall! I'm thinking about making a seperate video where I come up with 60 more, in the very unlikely scenerio of Nintendo giving us a second round of icons. I'm fine with the "unsucessful teleport" replacing the dragon, it'd be well known too thanks to it being Ness's character entrance in Smash. Ego Orb was another I considered instead of Foppy! I like that you mentioned the diagonal biking sprite arguably looking better, too. On a similar note, I think I would change Salsa to one of him in that direction as well since I don't think the front-facing sprite works as well for him. Just like what they did with Boney!
I'm upset that there's no backgrounds available for the game series with the best battle backgrounds.
Ahh I would love some backgrounds! The solid colors are fine but they're admittedly a little sad. The lack of any backgrounds is a problem with basically all retro icons, I'm not sure why only newer games get them
I would change sanctuary dragon for LLoyd's Dad or giygas for putrid moldyman. We need more trash can representation
Trash cans are important to all three games, it's true! What's funy is that there is trash can representation with the Mario vs. Donkey Kong icons! There's Mario carrying a garbage bin, and one by itself with two eyeballs peaking out that reminds me of Lloyd's dad

3:32 Yo, I never noticed it before, but they forgot to cut out part of the background from that sprite! Those green pixels are not meant to be there! 😂
I noticed that as I was putting the clip in too, though I just thought to myself "odd, but surely that's how it's supposed to look"! Sure enough however, you're right--it isn't and that's hilarious! They really messed up with the MOTHER 3 sprites for Smash...do you remember when they used a fan edit of the Masked Man sprite? They must've just found a picture of Ness's phone dad online too
@@ThaneGaming I've always thought Nintendo artists had access to some kind of huge library of Nintendo art assets which would include all the sprites, but I guess not. Seems like the employees are often left to figure out for themselves how best to capture certain assets.
I think the Pigmask being left out is a *disaster.*
i have a particular soft spot for the annoying old party man/hotel manager from earthbound so i'd probably replace the octobot with them, though i'm a big fan of the choices for mother 2 you had chosen!

It's unlikely, but they have reissued icons before! I'd love for that to happen for whatever the next console is going to be
I wish I got those Mother 3 icons when they were available. I kept hearing that switching regions was messinf things up, so I disnt want to risk it.

I personally wish we would’ve gotten more interesting sprites of the main characters instead of them just standing, like duster doing the pose he does before climbing a wall and stuff like that
Yes it is weird how they're all front-facing! The only exception for main characters is Boney. I think Salsa would've benefited from a diagonal sprite as well...
Flint tipping his hat would've been a good one, as would Poo meditating! Even Teddy from Beginnings has got a couple poses from the ending where he's rockin' out (though it isn't in the original Famicom version). I'll have to talk about this in the next video, I feel like this franchise would really benefit from a second round of icons (though I don't think it's happening, lol)

Octobot over Atomic Power Robot was a crime.
From EarthBound Beginnings, I'm cutting CD, the Scorpion enemy and the Armor for the iconic garbage can (LOOOOL), Big Foot and the Magicant Dragon. Also the Flying Man for the Canary Laura (this will make sense in the next section)
From EarthBound, I'm cutting Frank (the knives are really funny though), the Octobot, the dog, and the Phase Distorter. I have to add this game's Flying Man (I think it's more iconic), APPLE KID THE GOAT, a Tenda Villager (could be the elder with the mustache iirc) and the third strongest mole in the mines.
From Mother 3 I'm cutting Mr. Passion, the maid robot and the icon himself disguised Mr. Saturn :(. But I'm adding Iona (Magipsies shouldn't be a "problem", these are Japan exclusive after all), the Masked Man and the Mecha Drago.
I feel like we do need a character in a garbage can, they show up in every game from Lloyd's family to Mr. Saturn & Dr. Andonuts. Funnily enough, we did kind of get it with the Mario vs. Donkey Kong icons--there's a trash bin with two eyes peaking out (I know it's not the same though lol)! I can get on board with the rest of your choices, I'm thinking about making another video about a hypothetical "second round" of MOTHER icons and Apple Kid is for sure going on there

Hated how they made Giegue really small.
I don't like it either! When I did my mockup at 15:40, I originally had the Dragon at a larger size but it would've been inconsistant with Giegue so I made him small as well 😆

Right? MOTHER 3 was probably the hardest to select just 20 icons for since there are so many crucial characters but a Pigmask could've easily taken Mr. Passion's place

Ooh Buzz Buzz is a good one. I loved his appearance in Smash Ultimate as a spirit! If he was to scale with the rest of the sprites it'd be hilarious seeing a li'l speck as a pfp. Can you imagine if the sesame seeds from the desert were icons 😂

Sadly, you do need a Nintendo Switch Online membership, and if you were to sign up for one now you wouldn't be able to get them because they were only available for a limited time...
They really need to reissue icons, it'd be nice if they were on a cycle like what they used to do with Badge Arcade on the 3DS

They fixed the icon access glitch but did they fix the missions permanently changing to Japanese?
They must have because I'm not experiencing an issue, and I purchased the icons before anything was patched. Missions appear normal for me

they can only be used on Japanese accounts, they can't be transferred to other accounts and you can't use platinum coins from a different account to get them
That's not true! The EarthBound Beginnings & EarthBound icons released in all regions. The MOTHER 3 icons are exclusive to Japan, but if you change the location of the Nintendo account you use for NSO, your Platinum Points carry over so you can purchase them (that's what I did). Initially, this created a problem with loading icons when switching the location back, but it's since been fixed so the MOTHER 3 icons now stay in your collection.
You cant select the mother 3 icons with any other region than japan. Its hidden in the menu

Yes, but once you switch regions on your main account to Japan and purchase them, then switch back, you are free to select any of the MOTHER 3 icons from your collection to use as a profile picture even when the region is not set to Japan @@StarmenRock

They were only available for a limited time, sadly 😭 the MOTHER 3 icons were the last batch (issued on March 6), and they lasted for about a week

For real, I want to know what things would've been like if they had released here! Would fans be more hopeful for an official translation, even if it's likely not coming? Maybe things worked out for the best this way, I'm just happy it's been patched
@@ThaneGamingI mean they’re clearly aware that we were trying to get it, they could’ve just left the bug. I think Nintendo sees us but they don’t know how to help us. And yeah when I heard mother 3 would be getting icons before they were locked in Japan, I completely was thinking translation would happen. But nah. Also Porky statue = best icon

I have to believe the reason they didn't do it was because then it might've given fans false hope that an official translation is coming, but I think it's hilarious Nintendo didn't account for people changing their region just for this--I'm so happy enough people did it that they had to fix the app right away

I’m glad that I don’t support this trash company anymore. The communities and fans do everything better.
I always wanted Nintendo Treehouse to officially localize MOTHER 3 so that more people could experience the game (some people simply will not bother with emulation, for example), but I'm so worried that Mato's near perfect translation would be changed too drastically. He's stated that the fan translation will be taken down the moment Nintendo announces their own, and if it winds up being subpar then...oh well! That's now the most widely accessible version. I think the fan translation IS the definitive MOTHER 3 experience, so at this point I'd rather Nintendo remake the game with a new art style so that the original remains untouched. I'd still be excited if a translation were to be revealed though, if anything because I am morbidly curious about the changes they'd make. I'm not anti-Nintendo as I love their properties too much, but they do make baffling choices and I am wary of the company
