Huge respect for you Brian, spoken like the true rugby legend that you are. Here in South Africa we admire innovation and in the modern game with all it's rules, we need a level head like yourself putting things into perspective.
Well said, from an Irish fan, huge respect in Ireland for springbok rugby, and for Rasie Erasmus, who coached with munster in Ireland, there is a lot of affection for him here in Ireland, and especially here in my province, munster.
99.9% of South African people agree that they don’t care, but judging by this Irish fan you’d think we are all crying over the Irish crying. Nobody cares 🤣
So much respect for this guy playing , now even more on his take. Legend, best centre this era. On the comment made, at least SA always have been announcing teams early the week before the match. Not only this match.
I agree with Brian on this and I don’t understand why so much is being made of it. Some pundits who argue against it are basing their views on safety fears over players risking injury due to fatigue. In my experience of playing as a forward in my earlier years and then switching to the backs for the rest of my career, I found playing in the forwards way more taxing so the 7/1 split may actually result in fewer injuries due to fatigue? The modern players are way fitter and more conditioned so in most cases 80 minutes is not a huge ask (especially considering they actually play for less than 40 minutes real time).
Yes indeed Brian is a very intelligent and fair minded pundit, he speaks for the vast and overwhelming majority of Irish rugby supporters in the view's he expressed regarding the South African 7/1 split. Nobody in Ireland takes much notice of Matt Williams, or for that matter Keith Wood, their views are the exception, rather than the general view, which is a million miles removed.
I have had the privilege of meeting Brian personally in Dubai. A great man who is humble, knowledgeable and a gentleman. The game this weekend is going to be a classic!
Nobody in Ireland with any knowledge of the game have any problem with the springboks side using the 7/1 split, every team must utilise to the best of its abilities the areas they feel they are strongest in in, in the south African situation their forward strength is their most potent weapon, and they are fully entitled to do that, more power to them that they have these options at their disposal, so I've no problem with it. Matt Williams is Australian, he doesn't speak for Irish people, and neither does Keith Wood. Hope it's a good game, and may the best team win.
Thank you for pouring cold water on the rubbish that Woods and Williams have been spewing. It is a ridiculous argument from them - clearly trying to find some relevance.
Williams is a complete spoofer , won three games out of 17 when coaching Scotland against Japan, Italy and Samoa . If Ireland had come up with the 7.1 split he would be saying it was a brilliant idea.
And well played Ireland! We needed to be completely on our game and we weren’t. Disappointing, but Ireland were just a bit too good for us this evening.
Come on guys go and research the stats of kwagga smith and deon fourie in terms of height and weight. They are probably 2 of the smallest lightest springbok forwards in history. They are much smaller and lighter than the irish pack. Stop talking them up as if there are 7 forwards coming off the bench all 7 foot tall and 150kg.
Keith Wood is the only one to complain, not one other Irish rugby player has said anything against it, most Irish players admire the innovation, and willingness for a team to try something new and different.
So much respect for the Irish Rugby players. May the best team win. The Springboks will come on hard. But the Irish are not going to stand back .Size doesn't matter for them...
Storm in a bloody teacup. BoD sees common sense. 5-3, 6-2, 7-1, it's not a big deal. Everybody should just get on with the game. It's a beautiful sport that gets tarnished with stupid fluff off the field.
@@exb254 I didn't know about him also, thanks. I'm Irish and have no problem with it. The strategy has its downsides as well as upsides. It's risky if SA get a few injuries to their backs during the game.
Maybe limit players on the bench by weight and height, and vertical jump and 60m speed. And kicking ability. Because it's unfair if you have good forwards.
Or maybe the RFU could reduce the ridiculous amount of subs to 5 or 6 and introduce a bit of fatigue and open spaces in the last 20. This worked well for many a decade before !
I certainly don’t care, as an Irish fan. It means SA believe they have to use an unusual tactic to beat Ireland. That they don’t believe they have as good a chance with a traditional bench. Couldn’t care less. And if it backfires badly on them, it’ll cease to be a tactic for anyone in the future.
I respectfully disagree with you sir, it is a innovative, calculated risk and not a tactic as such and I believe it is good for the evolvement of the game. We simply play to our strengths. Statistically we still have the edge over Ireland and the game is played on a neutral ground, which counts heavily in our favour. Good luck, may the best team on the day take the spoils!
@@andrevogel1974 You have a low bar for “innovation”. It’s a tactic at best and a fairly blunt one at that. No doubt the better team will win on the day but it’s unlikely an extra forward or two will be the difference.
A call anybody can make Could be correct More forwards Could be wrong not enough backs if Ireland get in behind. Ireland will analyse to death. I suspect lots of little chips and round the corner stuff to keep the big men turning
Leave the boys alone...let them play rugby. If 7/1 works then the losers will cry unfair...if it fails then the other will cheer "told you so" ... let them play as they feel fit. Stop trying to tell the SA coaches who may or may not play in their team.....STOP whining .... do what we do ......EAT MORE MEAT !!!
funny how everyone ignores the fact that the South Africans were completely manhandling NZ from the first second of the game, they put NZ under Huge pressure forcing them into erratic errorsome infringing play long before the bench came on. One person Matt Williams, literally shat himself watching what happened to NZ worried for Scotland then ran around like an actual crying baby trying to turn it into a safety issue and the media had a field day. Pretty much all other fans, players, and coaches have agreed the 7-1 is innovative and playing to a team's strengths and the team that does it took the risk for the reward.
How's it weird, its on TH-cam, it can be viewed universally, and why shouldn't SA supporters comment on a situation pertaining to their team regarding their bench selection?
Lots of rules have been changed in rugby over the years because rules were unfair and the same will apply to this , but for now lets play the rules. There is more than one way to skin a cat….

Brian is as clear in his observation, thinking and his commentary as he was as a player. Respect for that bro.
It's not south african fans that's making the big fuss, its the media's interpretation of the squad selection 🤷♂️
Respect to O'Driscoll from a Bok fan. The man is humble and understands the game👍

He must go and teach touch rugby that is Williams game that will work for him
Others complain. Winners cope. Driscoll is a winner, a legend and a true great of the game. And that's from an Englishman.
Could work in Irelands favour anyway. Ireland has a lot of fast and quick players with good feet both on the bench and on field.

Great interview Brian, always been a respected player in the eyes of Springbok supporters. Let's see a great clash of titans today, North vs South
A team gets 8 subs whether they want 8 backs, 8 forwards or mixed is up to them. Can’t believe the nonsense from Williams and Keith wood
You can't have 8 backs. 3 specialist front rowers have to be included on the bench, thats in the laws.
