    "Marine Corps does everything as cheap as possible." Yup, here's a little story for ya:
    I was stationed at one of the gates in Camp Pendleton (the midway point between the one leading to Oceanside and the furthest North gate, it's been over a decade, don't remember the name) while I was working with PMO in '07. A huge convoy of brand new Army humvees drives through the gate. 5 minutes later, another huge convoy of brand new Air Force humvees follows. It starts to rain, and 5 minutes later a convoy of Marine Corps humvees come through.
    The lead vehicle had strings tied to the windshield wipers, and in order to operate them, the driver would pull one string, and then the front passenger would pull the other to bring them back down. Over and over. My fellow Marines and I on the gate saw this, and we were like, "Yeah, seems about right." It was the perfect illustration.

We had many similar experiences in boot camp and in garrison but the differences came when it came down to equipment and opportunities. In the Army we had all of the latest equipment as where he said they got the Army hand-me-downs. By the time we were halfway through our initial enlistments, I had already been to Airborne and Air Assualt school as to where he was still hoping to fly in a helicopter. Needless to say, the lack of opportunity to go to high-speed schools and other high-speed units was the main reason he did not reenlist after his 4 years was up. I was army for 15 years. The difference are slight depending on the missions and time period. I love my Marine brothers and sisters but I've never lost a fight to one and when we were stationed together on the battlefield we both had a go hard or go home attitude. The Army is just bigger so the perceived weaknesses are due to some support elements not being as hardcore, but elements like combat arms, maintenance, and special operations operate at the same tempo. We do tend to keep more troops that the Corp would probably cut but it's because like it was stated, we're bigger. Dicipline depends on the command. I've saw undisciplined Marines just like I've saw undiciplined Soldiers, but the Army would give more chances.

There are probably more modern stuff out there but I think the specialized units get them first and then the rest of us maybe get them a sometime down the line. I think the best way to look at the difference between the Army and the Corps is the Marines are like a shock force, while the Armys' purpose is to occupy and hold a position that the Marines cannot because of their lesser numbers. As a retired Army E-7, I tend to look at the Marines as generally better troops, because in bad situations some of the Armys' individuals leave something to be desired. I loved your statement about the Corps making due with whatever they can get. I was career Navy Aircrew, and we would fly to Air Force bases to get surveyed winter flight gear and parkas. The Air Force would turn in gear because the wrist cuffs got frayed. We had guys flying long-range aircraft that could take off in SoCal and land in Alaska, and some guys couldn't even get issued flight jackets. That Air Force gear sure came in handy. Look at pickup trucks. New trucks get a shiny blue paint job and go to the Air Force. Once the new truck smell wears off, they paint it green and send it to the Army. Once they beat the service life out of the truck, they paint it gray and send it to the Navy. In 20 years, I never rode/drove a duty vehicle that was even close to new.

I said "cool" and sat down to relax on the new sofa. It was then I noticed that although the sofa looked new, there was some minor wear with it. The S4 guy was still there and I asked him where the new furniture came from. He said they found out the air force were renovating some of their barracks over at Seymour Johnson and were throwing out all the old furniture. Naturally, we were more than happy to take it off their hands. Gotta love the cheapskate Corps.

    • @jeffnixon4534
      @jeffnixon4534 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They only need the 1 call because they’re not technically a “branch”, they’re a subgroup off of the navy. If the army only needed that one call they’d be the same. IF we weren’t talking about general infantry, I’d say the army sf were probably already there gathering intel and such so the marines could have something to work with till regular army gets there, but we’re not talking about sf operations and I’ve never been a marine so idk. I know all the different branches are gonna pick on one another but we’re all working together for the same outcome. Freedom! All these heated arguments are senseless cause I’ve seen marines get their asses handed to them by army soldiers, and same the other way around so it’s basically a pecker measuring contest at that point, some are bigger and some smaller. Every branch is better at something than any other branch and that’s why we have different branches lol, just depends on what you want to do I guess...can’t be a marine seal or a navy ranger

    I was stationed in 29 Palms with 1st Tank Bn. We bought all our Humvees and tanks used from the Army.
    We cross trained with the Army at Fort Irwin. All there Humvees were new, and had two radios, a GPS and everyone had NVGs. We had used Humvees and only the section leaders and above had two radios, GPS and only one PVS-7 per vehicle. We were still using map and compass to navigate.
    I saw that the Army wasn't as ready to fight as we were. Being a Marine 0352 (TOW Gunner), from Pvt on up we can assemble and accurately fire a TOW missile system. The Army unit we trained with, trains TOW gunners at Corporal rank and above. So in the Army, if the gunner gets taken out the Pvt that is driving isn't trained to fire the TOW missile system. He can only drive away or hopefully there is another Corporal or Sgt that is trained in the Humvee. The Army unit that we trained with didn't know how to navigate with map and compass. We had to give them a refresher course, because there GPS wasn't working. That was the whole problem that I saw with the Army, is that they are too dependent on technology. I always did my navigation with a map and compass, either on foot and by vehicle. I was never issued a GPS. There was one time having a GPS would have helped me. It was at night, and the visibility was low.
    There was very little ambient light and the nvg's were not helping at all. But, I was able to get within 75 yards of my grid. I think the military as a whole needs to get back to basics and learn to do more with less.

    My brother was in the Army around the same time I was in the Marine Corps in the mid 1970s. Some fiscal differences were when the Army was at the rifle range, they were told to use up all the ammo so they wouldn’t cut their budget. In the Marines you were told to turn in all unused ammo. When it got called in the Marine Corps we would go to supply and be issued Long Johns and field jackets. When winter was over you turned it all in. My brother in the Army was issued his cold weather gear and kept it. He came home with his field jacket, I did not. Our barracks had lockers that belonged to the Navy. When the Navy was done with them they gave them to the Marines and we painted them green. My buddy was in the Marine Corps artillery. In his barracks the squad bay had both junior marines and NCOs. The junior marines still had bunk beds, the NCOs had single beds and they separated the area between the two with a blanket hung up across some lockers.

      I'd go Army right now. We're in peace time, the Marines literally aren't doing anything. I know some guys in Marine infantry right now and they basically just mow lawns all day every day. My advice: go Army and get a job involving computers or a trade like plumbing. You'll get out and have actual certifications to use in the civilian world later on while the infantry guys will be working at McDonald's

    I remember for Operation Dessert Shield, dad was stationed in Okinawa at the time, and his unit was in Kuwait less than 24 hours later. He never did say how they were transported, if by ship or airdrop. I never did ask either.

    I read the graffiti on a portable toilet wall when stopping at a border crossing manned by US troops in the middle east.
    A lot of inter service rivalry lol one that stuck in my head was:

    My Ass Rides In Navy Equipment.

    Jamesons, At Ft Benning that is the home of the 75th Rangers. The only comparison that could be made to a USMC unit and a Ranger unit would be MARSOC
