I used to live at 47th and Noriega, that was my home break, learned to surf there; I'd be in the water 7 days a week and twice on Sunday. Heavy rip when the tide is running, you can paddle at Sloat and come in at Kelly's. But Noriega was always the biggest and the best. This isn't the biggest of days, because on the biggest days it breaks 2-3 miles out, all the way to the horizon. But plenty big!! We used to surf when the coast guard boats were doing their heavy wave training. I'll just say this: On those days, there are very few people on the outside. Much respect from an old timer, this vid brings back memories.

Even if you get a bomb, you gotta paddle back out with no channel and do it all over.
Once went out there when it was triple OH. Got two fun waves, at a peak by myself. Then, a set broke a hundred yards further out than the TOH’ers. I let it rag doll me in, feeling pretty wussy when I got to the beach. The next peak up had a dozen guys, all enjoying themselves. I felt super lame.
5 minutes later, one of those much bigger sets hit that peak, and 5 minutes after that, there were 12 guys on the beach too. Everyone got washed in.
My favorite quote (from a guy who learned to surf there): I never knew surfing was fun, until I surfed somewhere else.

I took one of the larger sets on the head and then let it wash me in...I went back out but glad I took the break.

OB is quite impressive on big winter West swells with offshore winds. It's a nasty place when it's over 6 foot and the paddle out can be almost impossible. The entire coast from Fort Point to Santa Cruze is absolutely impressive in the winter months when it's 8/10 with 30mph offshore conditions.. Yeah the swell must have come in earlier than Surfline expected. I was up at VFW and it was too crowded with too many sitting on the inside.

I find it very ironic that whenever it's really big you only see older guys in the water charging. Apparently all of the throngs of young shredders in their early 20's with their perfect hair and abs had something better to do today.
