The race argument in any genre of music is foolish. If you didn't know that, you've probably only heard his straight up hip-hop stuff from 96 to early 2000s. Which is my favourite era too. But Kamikaze, which is more recent, was good because it focused less on pop and more of a return to rap for hip-hop folks.
