    I love how the Spanish establishes and maintains friendships through lots of body contact - kisses on the cheek, lots of hugging, and basically just getting up there in one‘s personal space. This makes interactions much more close and personal.

    • @holliswilliams8426
      @holliswilliams8426 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Also I don't know if you know Spanish, but when writing to friends you also refer to things like this at the ends of emails, like ''un fuerte abrazo'' - ''a big hug'' or ''un beso'' - ''a kiss'', which is fairly charming.

      There is a downside to it, you know. If the interaction is negative, it is also much more close and personal.

    I lived in Spain for 16 years. My Spanish neighbours were friendly, curious about us and always generous with food and produce. They stayed up late, ate late and could never understand why our dogs lived indoors.
    They were noisy and excitable about life in general. The TV was on permanently.
    I was shown how to cook Spanish food which was lovely. They didn't really get us being vegeterian. Never mind they were good to us in lots of ways.
    We helped with the animals horses, dogs and chickens. It was a rural life so very different to big cities.

    5:16 we love everyone who comes here if they show respect. We just don't like drunk people doing stupid stuff in the middle of the day as if 100% of the time was a party. Their nationality does not matter even tho it's true that it is an usual stereotype for British and German young tourists more than any other group of tourists. It is likely that, partly because of historical reasons, people in the U.S. have failed to understand their neighbours. They even tend to refer to them using terms that actually belong to Europeans like Hispanic or Latino, whereas Mexico has got a big Native American influence both in their people and their food. Technically, Mexicans are way more American than U.S. Americans are. And yes, even the U.S. Census recognises that Native American can refer to any person whose origin is in North, Central, or South America.

    As a spanish, the image I have about brits is that the population is very polarized in two types of people: drunken hooligans, and more noble and cultured people. Also the image I think a big part of the world has is that britain has the worst food in the world. I also know none of this is true, because I've never been there and it is just what I got from internet, tv, etc.

    • @Azog150
      @Azog150 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For food, for sure British cuisine is not the best. But nor is it as bad everyone says. The image most of the world has about British food comes from US TV and culture. But the USA formed it's opinion on British food when US soldiers came to Britain during the Second World War. At this time, British people had food rationing due to Nazi Germany trying to starve Britain into submission. People were eating tinned food and leftovers, with little-to-no spices. So obviously, American's did not get a good impression of British cuisine, and that is the image most of the world now has.
      In reality, British cuisine is not much better or worse than any other Northern European or Eastern European cuisine. It's generally comfort food, which is what you need in this weather. Hearty meat pies, gravy, roasted meats, fried fish, pastys, butter, great cheese, amazing cakes and sweet pastries, ales, ciders, whisky, gin, jams, and about 100 different ways to eat potatoes!
      The good thing about not having an amazing cuisine is that Britain has also adopted food from all around the world. You can find spices and basic ingredients from lots of worldwide cuisines in a standard British super market.

    This gentleman at 10:45 hits a very interesting topic. British politeness verging on hypocrisy. I would not expect a British person in front of a camera to speak their mind honestly about us. I would, though, expect quite a few Spaniards to do the opposite, even if not doing it would be a better choice.

    To the lady at 5:12: We do have our up and downs amongst ourselves but we certainly are quite highly strung in front of others, particularly northern Europeans who believe in the black legendary BS and think they're better than others. It's then that we stick together and good luck if you have aroused our anger.
    That said, we actually love having others (Brits or whoever) over here, either temporarily or permanently. However, not behaving like a drunken idiot and jumping off balconies into swimming pools (if lucky) does help with acceptance by the locals. So does making a bit of an effort to learn the language and not assuming that everyone is to speak English, even when you're abroad, and even when English is the modern day Lingua Franca. We've watched these things happen.
    In all honesty, many of us appreciate virtues in the British people that we'd like to have in our own. If you felt that we didn't want you here, think what could be the reason behind that, and if your own behaviour could have to do with it.

    If the UK had Spain's weather, I think British people would be just as happy as Spanish people and would also live that outdoor social life. Just look at Australia, they are basically Brits but with better weather and beaches, and they're way happier.
    I think most British people are depressed and they don't realise it because they're basically forced to live their life inside and never see the sun.
    There's nothing to do except drink alcohol and watch terrible TV for most people, but if we get a heatwave in summer, the country comes alive.
    I would love to be outside all the time but because it's cold and grey overcast skies every single day, I live my life in front of my PC sadly enough.

    The nearest the average Brit gets to Spanish is,

    No, it's not that we don't like that you're here, which seems right to us. It is that you do not learn the language. After unconditional years.
    Although if you think about it we really don't care that's your problem.
    Besides, you already know that your accent is not easy to understand.
    Try a little more (to learn spanish ) as if it were an anecdote in your life.

    1: 🇪🇸food - no comparison to all its neighbouring countries. 2: stick to using - Brits and British, although you are interviewing people in Brighton. 3: your advertisement writes - practice. It is not wrong and yet better to “practise” when we speaking British.

    I've lived in 10 countries, 3 of which were Arab countries. I'm originaly from the US. I've been in Spain for 23 years. I honestly do not think people/a culture are more open or less open or more of this or more of that in some sort of monolithic way. There are cultural generalisations about a people/culture which are often too many times confused with sterotypes. I think the Spanish as whole or the Brits or whoever as whole might be nicer, more "open" about one thing and more closed minded about other things. For example, in Spain, rarely if ever do you have lunch or let alone dinner at the Spanish person's house unless you are part of the family. The Spanish home tends to be a very private space compared to what I've seen in the US or France. The Spanish tend to meet outside. Not all Spanish of course. Religion is more private topic in Spanish where in the US Americans tend to talk about God, their relationp to God more freely. In Spain, religion is private, associated with the "dark catholic inquistion franco conservative nasty history." Where in the US God is associated with different relgions, faith, the spiritual, and personal connection. It's totally different! : ) cheeers. Good video!

    I think in general most Spanish people are nice but they can be weirdly cliquey and also frustratingly rude and arrogant at times. Like if you have one Spanish colleague you know, they are fine on their own but if they are with other Spanish people they suddenly group together and the person will act like they don't know you, it's very strange.

      @@Cobe1976 I've lived in Spain and Britain, and I would say Spain (or I should say, certain parts of Spain) are definitely worse for this. There is far less effort to include new people into groups in Spain. Many Spanish people retain their friends from school right through to adulthood, much moreso than in Britain, and for this reason it can be very hard to break down that barrier.

      Good luck making local friends in England if you're a foreigner. It does take some time.
      While what you say is true, being accepted in a group of friends that have been being friends since childhood is quite feasible over here. It all comes down to your own and very personal behaviour. If they do like you, you'll be accepted. And we are quite a social country, as you well know.

      This is a country of 47 million souls. Social interactions vary greatly from north to south and east to west, and the "being cliquey" thing can be one of those things that vary wildly depending on the region. I'm sure you haven't travelled the whole country as to have reached such a consolidated conclusion but when you do, I'm sure you'll realize how wrong you are.
