The father is just as responsible as the mother. How did he not know about the babies!? He should be in jail too. It sounds like all the responsibility is placed on the mother. He should’ve worn a condom if they were struggling financially and for his wife’s mental health struggle.

I was a postpartum nurse in the Philippines & in the USA & we never discharge infants from the hospital unless their birth has already been registered. Those infants that were found abandoned in the trash or just anywhere were born outside of the hospital or were concealed from medical personnel.

How come they can skip the register procedures? Why is the blame put to mothers only? Where are the fathers?

It seems like K society has a lot of work to do to support mothers financially and otherwise. The patriarchal society is the root cause of these problems. The support is not in place for mothers and terrible tragedies are a result.

So, you have a nation with a severe decline in birth rate, and, you've got this. How does the country manage to learn from these terrible crimes? What does it mean? Are kids not cherished? Is money and social status too important, enough to think that a child will jeopardize it? Or, is there a real issue with proper mental healthcare?

@@jharris3267 It is permitted but it is very taboo, that also doesn't explain why married couples are killing their babies and citing "financial difficulty"...Koreans do consider money and social status more important than almost everything else. The suicide rates in the country, the bullying of lower-class individuals in schools and workplaces, and how Chaebols are more important than everybody else and are even above the law. This proves Koreans tend to value wealth more than human life in most cases.

children born out of wedlock are a big social No no. Men are never considered to blame. Single mothers get no benefits or help, so they give their babies up. Baby box are wonderful places, what happens when they go into Korea system is ok too if parents have given consent for adoption. It's SHAMEFUL that South Korea hasn't made tight and severely punishable laws to protect newborns and children. ABHORRENTLY SHAMEFUL.
All this is happening when "on paper" the birth rate is at a record all time low
    Quote:-
"The country's total fertility rate, the average number of children a woman bears in her lifetime, came to a record low of 0.7 in the second quarter of 2023, down 0.05 from a year earlier. It was much lower than the replacement level of 2.1 that would keep Korea's population stable at 51 million.30 Aug 2023."
It's sickeningly heartbreaking that newborns...that all children are not protected. Including those that are in orphanages.
It's so obvious that they're sold to Pedophiles or sold into Slavery...and probably only a very minute percentage sold abroad to genuine couples wanting to adopt a newborn. The brokers selling them onto the Highest Bidder.
....'brokers', let that word sink in.
It's also tragic that if they're not trafficked they're murdered, what kind of world is this?!!
I hope that every woman or child that gives birth is fully supported and no longer stigmatised. They need to be fully supported financially until such times they can work to contribute towards costs.
Local Doctors, Pharmacists and Hospitals all need to abide by informing the government of all pregnancies. The fathers also need to be made accountable too. It's too easy for them to walk away and carry on their lives without any stigmas or worries.
I find it strange that when SK couple are not wanting to marry or have children because of SK's cost of living, that the government is not doing more to help this situation.
    A very tragic report indeed.

The society always shoves responsibilities and points fingers(blame) only on women/mothers. Government, Media and a country's rules and regulations created by the so called society are a no different. If they have to blame, arrest and punish someone for the crime it should be both or leave the both to live their life with the other 3 of their kids. They just ruined the 3 kids lives for the two infant babies who were killed by the parents. The 3 kids have to live with it for their rest of their lives while the society always remembers some how the other and treat them differently and yes they got seperated from their mother. The society always thinks about the children but not about the parents because of population issue because young generations are the future of nation. The tone of the documentry itself is telling their point of view on mothers. If the media is so upright about this issue then shouldn't they first uproot the organizations which are responsible for illegal activities by helping the police. Instead of disclosing the info about the women/mothers. Why in the world did they blur the woman's face if they are going to disclose her name and age through subtitles. It seems the law and people always trusts the fathers words rather than the mothers. Who is responsible for the mothers to go through out the pregnency time and give birth alone and take these kind of decisions. Are only women responsible in giving birth to another human being? Why should women only take responsibility of their kids, shouldn't they(counseling organizations)crack down on the fathers also and hold them responsible if they don't know about the pregnency they'll get to know after they found them and if the fathers know beforehand but brokeup because of responsibility even then the counseling should be held both the parents. Why blame only the women? why put responsibility tag only on women? Its not like the government and law will take reponsibility or provide support to the babys and the mothers until they can provide themselves a proper life on their own. They'll just provide advice and a job to the mother but the money earned through that job will it be sufficient for both mother and the kid expenses what about the kids education and if the mother is a teenager and wants to continue her studies which were haulted due to her pregnency the money provided will it be sufficient. The counseling can try to persuade the mothers by saying thats your baby you have to take care of the baby you are the mother if not you who will take care of the baby you can't deny your motherly instincts thats your blood that flows in the baby, you can do it hwaiting! This situation is a big hurdle in your life you can overcome it you have the strength you can take care of the baby. Then what about the mother what about her time for her health , dreams and goals in her life that she dreamt of achieving. The mothers wanting to escape or giving up the babies for both of their lifes sake and then yet the society and the so called law keeps dragging the mothers to take responsibilities to make sacrifices for the babys instead of thinking about their own life and goals. I heard that in korea they call the women " 'so and so kid's name' mom " name tag rather than call the women's names. After a baby/kid/a new generation is born the society expects women/mothers to be and are treated like dust, a pushover a punching bag who takes everyones responsibilities as their own problems and keep worrying about familys wellbeing except for their own health and life goals. The society has a tag for it 'ideal type the obedient type of woman' to be in a family and society. If anyone wants to escape from that algorithm they are considered as unfit, shameful and even criminals who need to be punished for abundening their babys and sentenced to serve jail time. Instead of thinking of holding someone in the biological parents responsible the law and education system should first start educating people how to be careful not to fall for an unfit person, how to be careful and take proper steps inorder not to get pregnent and even then some how a mistake happened the biological parents should be educated about the illegal baby/children traficking organisations-the patterns that they follow to fish for innocent parents who want to give their kids for adoption.

@@kpop4815 wow did my comment sound like I want murders to roam around freely 😂. I guess You didn't understand the issue i am pointing out in my comment. I am talking about misogyny of gender inequality in the societies of this 🌎 even in the Case of Murder. If they have to punish/arrest someone for the murders they have to arrest both of the parents instead of singling out only the mother because not only the one who killed but also the one who hid as if nothing happened is also responsible. For my single comment that you did not understand you asked me what should murders be left free to roam well the husband left his wife to murder second baby too. He doesn't know about 1 baby okay but he knows about the other two but he did nothing. And what was the last sentence you mentioned i just can't understand "how do you know that the person is not a threat to the society?" Then how do you know that a person who killed her own offfsprings is a threat to others in the society like how? Are you suggesting that murdering her babies will increase her murderous instincts and it may become a continuous habit and she may become a continuous offender? I don't know much about criminal pyschology so enlighten me. That means she need to be hanged because some years in prison and getting out can't confirm that she's sane right? Ahh! this case is a headache if she couldn't handle her postmortem depression, want to escape from responsibility obviously which she might have felt like a burden and concerned about her financial status she should have just killed herself instead of killing the first baby, problem solved the baby would have been alive the other 2 would not exist and she would have not gone to jail and get lynched by people online and offline. Less people might have just talked about her for few days that she killed herself due to PD that's it.

because the laws for registrations at birth became laxer over time post war in order to accomodate to the skyrocketing demand for korean orphans abroad in the 70s and 80s. if they could relax the laws which required births to be registered, they could also get away with trafficking more children by creating fake documents which deem the child a "legal orphan" on paper even if they werent actually orphans which was often the case. it was a case where demand far outweighed supply, and in order to take advantage of that, with the help of the korean government privatization campaigns, they were able to create a false narrative that orphans ran amuck in the country which would be used to justify relaxing the laws. the privatization of adoptiom agencies meant that children who were unregistered didnt have protections from the government if they got into their hands, and because parents were so desperate, they would surrender the kids to them. the orphan infrastructure is massive in korea because its big business. but even though registration laws are lax, it is often restricted to the mothers duty and that is also intentional because of the stigmas against single mothers which again, increases the likelihood that mothers will surrender their children esp. if they are unwed. idk if that made sense but overall, orphans are big business in korea and so the laws are changed in order to accomodate for that.

its because historically, international adoption was such a big business at one point that the laws for birth registration became looser and looser to allow more "orphans" to be created so they could be sold overseas. because people could be caught trafficking, they falsified documents to make children more adoptable to the eyes of the law. over time, this "legal adoption" devolved into blatant trafficking but the registration laws didnt recognise the children as legally born so it didnt matter. the private adoption organizations continue to have significant influence over the laws and because it benefits them to have such lax laws (such as only allowing unwed mothers to register, which they never do because single moms are stigmatized in korea and often turn to adoption, leading to other family members who want to keep the child such as fathers to be unable to register the child by law) they refuse to change it. basically, the law does require registration, but people ignore it because it allows them to sell more babies illegally

I blame the system too. Making it difficult for single parents to register a child. They have to have the family of either the father or the mother willing to have on record that the child is motherless/fatherless. Korean is still too old school to have that shame in their family name. This is also a huge reason why many abandoned their baby. The school and daycare system will deny the child/children without a registered documentation. Times have change and the system needs an adjustment whether they like it or not.

My opinion is that this problem can be solved by educating the parents. We all know that teenagers really want intimate relationships. The parents of these young people must stop inducing fear in this regard, but rather explain to them the consequences of their actions, and be educated in terms of protection during sexual intercourse so that they do not end up with an unwanted pregnancy. If it still gets there. Both parties must be responsible because that girl did not get pregnant on her own. I think that in this way it would not come to the point where a teenage girl abandons her child or sells it

You should treat well all the children because they are the future of your nation, no matter where they came from and there story, they are human beings like you and have feelings and want an opportunity to live and be happy. It is a shame the way you treat the sons and daughter of your country, they should be more protected. You can see other countries, there are good examples in this world, sometimes I think you live in the years of 50, 60, 70 and 80. Not critice but is sad😢.

Post-war Korea wasn't that poor, but some young unmarried mothers were pressured by family to give up their children for adoption.
The adoption company knew the identity of many of the mothers, but they kept it secret. This is still common in he adoption-industry today.

It’s heartbreaking . The main problem of Korea is their system . Korean government should make a better living conditions for single mothers/ for kids. It must be financial support ,affordable education centres for kids. There should be a program that supports parents n kids. Only this way Korean can increase their popularity back n ppl will not feel that having a kids=having burden

We have a welfare system that helps, however some of the women end up with 3, 4, or more kids and every one of them have different fathers and never get off welfare. They get free childcare, medical, and education. Anyone can make one mistake, but often it becomes a way of life.

Stop making excuses for these heinous acts. Mental health or not, you're having a bad day or not, babies are still dead because of it. Be concerned about that happening to others. What is a society if you can't protect the weakest among us? Disgusting.

Don't allways blame mothers, sometimes they have been forced to kill babies as the husbabd demands it and if it comes out, the statement is" I did not know". As women give birth, they are left alone if they have depression or are abused by husband. If men would give birth, it would be a whole other story: Protected, Paid for service to society by giving birth etc. all just 1class service but as only women give birth, it is their problem.
